Chapter Text
Wemmbu desperately searches for warmth, but he could only feel the freezing cold slowly trailing down his fingertips, feeling the painful fear of death, he breathed hard and desperate one last time.
He didn't want to die…
He sometimes did…
But now with the actual threat of death looming over him, Wemmbu found himself regretting, regretting every decision leading up this, he was gonna the way he lived.
War
Blood
Agony
Recovery…
Endlessly, Wemmbu wakes, eyes open to see bright white, pearly white tears escape his pale eyes. “Again…”
May 4th, Wemmbu took a deep sigh, lifting his hands, warm and soft. “Again…” he lifted those hands up to his face, rubbing his face with sluggish favor, lifting his body up with every strength he could muster.
Wemmbu remembered how it happened the first time, his first death… his first regression.
His first regression was during his days at being Zam's lap dog, at the time he still didn't realize he was being targeted, until he was quick dropped by Flame, no match to his stronger strength and skill.
His second regression, was filled with confusion, and immediate hostility to Flame, which made his second life much shorter when snooping in Jamato’s base.
His third regression had been longer, had more allies, had more potential, he was getting smarter with every death, and even made it all the way to finally befriend Flame, though short-lived, his life was finally getting somewhere, but it had ended just as abruptly by a sword to his large intestine, the law ruined him.
His fourth and fifth regression was just as abruptly ended, He spiraled, and stayed in his bed for the majority of it, Spoke managed to gain all kinds of control and power, pitied Wemmbu enough to take him in, it was a nice jail cell, Wemmbu died much boredly, in his sleep, old and wrinkly.
His sixth regression was his longest run so far, he even managed to gain peace in a short while, he even made a friend, named Eggchan, again, nothing stayed peaceful forever, by the time Arachnid executed Egg Infront of him, he jumped off voluntarily…
Now past his seventh regression, those ones felt like a blur, esch time, Wemmbu died, Wemmbu sacrificed, Wemmbu recovered. By now, Wemmbu didn't even know what number he was in, he stopped counting since the 40th regression.
Everything was predictable, a pattern that Wemmbu eventually learned to meet, he's been following a straight continues path for almost 10 years by now, it felt stale and mindless.
To Wemmbu, it all felt like a game, everyone around him felt like recurring characters that change depending on what choices he made.
One dimensional characters…
That's all they are to him.
Except for one, Eggchan, every regression, since the sixth regression, he has been popping up more recently, his appearance would change slightly, it was like watching someone you love came back home only for them to come back wrong… it felt a little uncanny, it felt wrong… Wemmbu can't even remember what Eggchan used to look since the sixth regression.
Eggchan doesn't seem to remember what events happened before the current possible timeline, and he doesn't seem to have lasting scars, but he was the one thing that kept Wemmbu's predictable life, unpredictable.
Maybe that's why Wemmbu kept him by his side, why Wemmbu still searched for him, why he still chooses to do the same predictable path…
“Isn't it fascinating how humans seem to grow so adaptable?”
Wemmbu jolted up, his head against the grassy plains, looking back to Egg with tired, almost dead white eyes. “Huh…? What do you mean?”
Egg tilted his head, pure white wings cover his eyes with angelic elegance, a soft smile on his lips. “I mean, think about it! Humans grow from any circumstances, the drying heat of sun, the cold winter breeze, some even mutated and migrated to all kinds of different humans.” He puts a finger up, as he tallied up his evidence.
Wemmbu, in response, could only close his eyes, exhaustion taking in his body. “Really…? I find them quite weak… for creatures who cause so much pain and suffering.” his lips seemed to move.
Egg hummed. “Maybe, but, what creature hasn't done at least one bad thing in their lives? Rules change every millennia, and every universe is a different set of experiences!”
Wemmbu hummed back. “I guess that makes sense..?” He mumbles, a cough escaping his throat, as his eyes moved up from the blue starry night to his bestfriend’s own eyes.
Eyes, that seemed to finally escape the blocking of his wings. “Yeah… so, maybe in your next life, you'd try to enjoy it a bit more?” Egg whispered, tears rolling down his face.
Wemmbu sighed. “I'll try… it's basically guaranteed.” He mumbles back, his head aching from the head trauma.
“Spend more time with me if I'm in it… okay Wemmbu?” Egg's fingers slowly push down Wemmbu's eye lids shut, leaving Wemmbu in the darkness of his thoughts, as his final moments go by.
Wemmbu hadn't enjoyed his regression to the fullest, he could come back from the dead, but death felt like an obby with no checkpoint, he didn't truly find it in him to try and break the pattern…
But…
If he could go one day…
One day in a timeline where he can be…
Happy
Unpredictable
Maybe…
Even sad…
Knew experiences, new goals, if life is just going to keep repeating without an end, why not enjoy it while Wemmbu is at it..?
