We Never Dated

Summary:

Sunoo remembers it all too well.

Late nights in his arms, sneaking out at midnight, stolen drinks, careful touches, and a million almost-kisses.

Now that this boy is back in town and no longer 16, Sunoo has to find a way to coexist with the man he’s been thinking about since the day he left. Was two years enough time for him to move on? Or was his history with his ex best friend too important to let pass?

Notes:

I kind of wanted this to be longer than it turned out but my attention has shifted to a really exciting fic…

From Sunoo’s perspective:)

Chapter 1: Bittersweet Sixteen

Chapter Text

Two years ago…

Sunoo’s Birthday party began at 7:00, and to no one’s surprise, his best friend arrived at 8:00… a.m.

Sunoo was aroused by a firm knock at his bedroom door, then a tall figure slipping past the entry. He could feel the mattress dip next to his hip, then a hand shaking him awake.

“Kim Sunoo,” he whisper-yelled, “happy birthday!”

Sunoo groaned and rolled back over, shoving his face into a pillow and pulling his sheets over his head. A good thirty seconds went by before this peace was ruined. He felt the blanket being pulled off of him, and before he could fight back it was completely gone. “Yah! Park Sunghoon! Give it back!”

“Woah woah woah… I just walked my tired ass over to your house, up two flights of stairs, and into this bedroom to have you not even say thank you?” Sunghoon finished his sentence with a snicker. He stood at the edge of Sunoo’s bed, eyebrow cocked.

“I’ll thank you when you give it back!” He grunted through his teeth as he tried desperately to rip the sheets from his hands. Sunghoon finally let go, sending Sunoo dramatically launching back into his bed.

The older walked over and opened the curtains, revealing a distant ocean view out of the floor to ceiling window. He pushed open the balcony door and grabbed Sunoo by the wrist, pulling him outside.

“Be grateful, Kim Sunoo. You never know how long you’ll have here.”

“What the hell?” his face delivered pure confusion, perfectly matching his words. “Why are you being so sentimental all of the sudden?”

Sunghoon just shook his head and returned inside. “It’s your sixteenth birthday.”

“I’m aware…”

“Just saying we should enjoy it. You only get one. Plus, it’s the beginning of our summer break, and since we’re older now…”

“Where are you going with this?” Sunoo had an underlying worry in his tone.

“I bought us alcohol. Just me and you. Maybe we could have some after the party? I know it’s random or whatever, but there’s a lot I want to do with you this summer.”

Sunoo stepped closer, “Sunghoon we have so long to drink, I think I’d like to actually remember my sweet sixteen.”

The dark haired boy walked over to lay on the latter’s bed, patting the spot beside him.

“We won’t get too out of control, yah.” His voice was more serious now, and this concerned the younger.

Since when has he ever even wanted to drink?

“Fine. But if you bring any of that stuff to my party I swear I’ll kill you. Actually, let’s go put it in the basement now…I’m not sure I trust you to not sneak it to the garden,” Sunoo turned on his side to face the older boy. “Mom said we could have it to ourselves tonight once everyone leaves, so I was thinking we could just sleep in the guest bedroom.”

“Mhm.”

Sunoo slapped him on the shoulder, “Sunghoon! What’s the point of even coming in here if you’re just going to go back to bed?”

“Be with you,” he mumbled into the pillow.

Sunoo just rolled his eyes and let himself drift back off into sleep.

His party had consisted of a few family friends, an impossible amount of ‘cousins’, aunts and uncles he’d swore he’d never seen, and a couple neighbors.

He’d spent about two hours wandering around the garden greeting these half-strangers. The amount of social stamina it would talk to converse with two hundred people was something he’d not prepared himself for. The last hour of the party was dedicated to finally cutting his cake and attempting to shoo the unwanted crowd away.

Sunoo retreated to the basement the moment the last person left, and immediately started his lecture. “You’re so dead.”

Sunghoon turned his phone off and walked from the couch to where the other stood in the basement kitchen. “What? I kept the alcohol away from the party like you said.”

He rolled his eyes and turned his back to the pale boy and opened the fridge, “You didn’t even show your face. Do you know how nice it would’ve been to have someone to talk to aside from a distant family who only speaks about how much I’ve grown?”

“Yah…” Sunghoon softened his voice and walked closer to the blonde boy, “I thought you’d want me out of your hair, I really am sorry.”

Sunoo grabbed a pack of beer and gestured for the older boy to grab the seltzers. “It’s okay, hyung, just help me out please.” His words were kind, but his voice sounded exhausted and slightly irritated.

Sunghoon took the pack out of his hands, and set it on the counter. He pulled Sunoo into a hug, and buried his face in the younger’s hair.

“Hyung!” Sunoo giggled, “why are you being like this?”

“What?” he teased without pulling away, “I can’t hug my best friend?”

Sunoo knew that was what they were, but the older’s words still made his heart flutter.

He pushed Sunghoon away and laughed, “Just grab the drink, would you?”

He snickered back at Sunoo and piled the bottles into his arms.

The boys had made a stupid goal to finish both the four pack of beer, and the six pack of seltzer. Three drinks in, Sunoo found himself uncontrollably laughing at potentially the dumbest words he’d ever heard.

“What’s so funny? A boy can’t dream?”

Sunoo leaned forward and pushed his head into Sunghoon’s shoulder, who was also sitting cross legged in front of him on the couch. “Not when it’s about  telekinesis.”

Sunghoon pushed the boy back and shifted the conversation. “Let’s play a game. Whoever finishes their beer first gets to ask the other any question they want, and you have to answer honestly.”

Sunoo nodded his head and began to count down from three. By the time he hit one, the race was off. A sudden hiccup forced Sunoo to tip his drink back down, causing Sunghoon to win.

He pouted and gave his hyung the best puppy eyes he could manage. Sunghoon playfully scoffed then asked, “Have you ever had your first kiss?”

Sunoo hesitated, embarrassed of his answer. He shook his head no and tried his best to not pay attention to how the older would react.

Sunghoon just giggled and said, “It’s okay, yah. Me neither.”

He finally looked up to find the boy staring past his eyes and seemingly into his soul. Sunghoon’s face looked softened, maybe from the alcohol, maybe from something else. Sunoo found himself scooting closer to the latter, and him doing the same. The dark haired boy’s hand cupped Sunoo’s cheek, and he began to slowly lean in. Sunoo felt every ounce of his body freeze.

Is he…

Centimeters from his face, Sunghoon shifted his direction and pulled him into an awkward hug. His arms snaked around the other’s torso, and Sunoo’s finally found their way to his neck.

A hug?

Despite a slight disappointment cloaked in embarrassment flowing through his veins, he pulled Sunghoon closer to him, and rested his chin on his shoulder.

Sunoo wasn’t sure how long they’d stayed that way, but when they broke apart they mutually decided it was best to just go to bed. Not caring to move from the couch, Sunghoon leaned back in his spot and pulled Sunoo’s body down with him. Though the position was rather uncomfortable, he felt no desire to move from the older’s chest. Both of their front sides were completely pressed together as Sunoo nuzzled his face into his hyung’s neck. Sunghoon began to rub lazy circles on his back as he let sleep take him once more.
