Work Text:

Marker looked at himself in his mirror, fidgeting with his black tie.

He had brushed his hair earlier, it was less messy than how he usually styled it.

All because he wanted to look good for her.

God, why her?

Fanny is the prettiest girl Marker has ever seen. She had amazing hair, amazing style, amazing eyes… He could just go on and on about it. Her looks weren’t the only thing great about her, her personality was… also nice…

It’s just too bad that Fanny has a boyfriend. Who just so happens to be Marker’s best friend, Tree.

Obviously Marker feels horrible for having a crush on his best friend’s girlfriend. Who wouldn’t?

But no matter how much he tried to clear her out his head, he couldn’t help himself.

At lunch, he would convince Black hole and Tree to let him throw their trash away for them.

Why you might ask?

Fanny sits at the outside tables, Marker sits at the inside tables. The table Fanny always sits at is actually in front of a window, which is right next to the indoor trash cans.

Marker would pretend that he was throwing away food wrappers or napkins, when in reality he’s getting an excuse to watch Fanny through the window.

Fanny sits with Lightning and Bubble. He doesn’t really understand what they talk about even though he took an entire lip reading class just for that purpose.

It doesn’t matter, Marker just wants to see Fanny.

The way she scowls at everything, the way she fidgets with her fingers… he loved to just watch her.

Everyday. Marker would repeat this routine everyday. If anyone looked inside the window Marker would turn away towards the trash cans like he were just throwing something away.

Tree and Black hole did grow suspicions, but came to the conclusion that Marker liked to zone out and thought not too much of it.

Marker and Tree had the same english period, they would walk together and often times run into Fanny.

Tree would become all flustered when Fanny came around, which is reasonable considering the fact that he’s in love with her.

Fanny and Tree would talk to each other for a bit, acting all lovey-dovey.

And Marker was just there.

Watching.

At times, he would crack some jokes and Fanny would laugh, making his heart flutter.

But Tree being there, the feelings were immediately crushed. The reminder that he was totally just betraying his best friend by feeling this way.

And watching them kiss was the worst.

Even though it would usually be a peck.

It hurt how Marker was forced to realize that he’ll never have her.

But he couldn’t let this show, of course. It would start terrible drama. And Marker didn’t want to lose his best friend.

So he just pushed it down and kept his jokester facade.

——

At the winter dance, Marker looked around for his friends. He then spotted them standing around the punch table together.

“Hey guys!”. He cheered, running over to them.

“Hey Marker,” Black Hole greeted.

“Hello!” Tree smiled, waving lightly.

Fanny just stared. Classic Fanny.

“Do you want punch?” Black hole offered, turning his full attention towards Marker.

“Ooo! Yes!” Marker buzzed.

The two walked over to the bowl of punch, Black hole poured him a cup and handed it over to him. Marker happily took it.

“Yay!” Marker exclaimed, smiling at Black hole.

Black hole softly smiled back.

Marker looked over to see what Tree and Fanny were doing. Fanny looked a bit irritated.

“What’s got you so upset, love? Tree frowned.

“This is a dance. Everyone is dancing EXCEPT US!” Fanny pouted, crossing her arms.

“If you wanted to dance, why didn’t you say so?” Tree smirked, grabbing Fanny’s hand and walking over to the dance floor.

Marker turned back to Black hole and frowned. Tree treats her so nicely… There no way he had a chance. Well, not like he had one before.

That should’ve been him dancing with her, not tree.

“Everything okay, Marker?” Black hole inquired, fidgeting his fingers around his own cup.

“…Too bad we have nobody to dance with, Haha…” Marker grinned nervously.

“We could just sit down if you want,” Black hole suggested.

“Yay!” Marker fake cheered.

The two walked over to the bleachers, which had a nice look over the room. Black hole turned over to Marker

“So,” Black hole started, “You’ve been zoning out a quite awful lot…” He said, expecting an explanation.

“I do like to daydream,” Marker smiled, starting to get nervous.

Black Hole smiled and nodded, “And you like to stare at Fanny as well?”

Marker froze. Oh no, he’s been caught.

“Don’t even reject it.” Black hole looked over at Marker.

“Well… Maybe…” Marker scratched the back of his neck.

Black hole lightly shook his head.

“I know, I know! I mean— It’s just a little tiny crush…! You can’t blame me! Tree is a really lucky guy.” Marker said in defense.

“Hmm, I mean yeah, Fanny is a pretty girl.” Black hole hummed.

“Yeah! You can’t really blame me, I’m sure it’ll just go away soon!” Marker chuckled.

“You’re right.” Black hole looked over at Tree and Fanny slow dancing.

“I’m happy for them!” Marker smiled.

“Me too,” Black hole looked back over at Marker, “Hey- I’m gonna go use the restroom real quick. I’ll be back.” He stood up.

“Be back soon!” Marker cheered, waving him a goodbye as he walked down the bleachers.

When Black hole left, Markers exterior almost immediately changed. He stared at Tree and Fanny with a frown on his face.

He started at them intensely, watching their every step.

They both looked great, They looked like they were worth a million dollars. They would definitely have a future together, their relationship is so perfect.

Marker felt tears start to form, he wiped his eyes.

Marker was happy for Tree, really. It was great that his best friend experienced a relationship so amazing.

So why was his heart broken?
