Chapter Text
Oh perfect. Just what I needed. I looked around the table to see who my colleagues would be for the upcoming ritual. Most of them I couldn't care less about. But of course, there had to be a few that just loved to see me.
Silver to the left seemed like she couldn’t give a fuck about what’s happening; probably thinking about how long she’s gotta wait until she can get wasted. And of course Ivy just had to be here. Already talking to everyone. Smiling. Asking questions. Acting like she actually cared about the answers. I don’t get what her deal is. Helping people ugh. Ivy's always trying to help people. One day someone's gonna put a knife in her back for it. That's how these things go.
She’s always so judgy with me too. Sure maybe I killed a couple people for Mandoza but I mean so what. I only did it for the money. Eh whatever, it’s not like I gotta be friends with her. Just get along with her enough to get this ritual done I suppose.
Let’s see there’s Paradox. Still annoyed at them for kicking me out of the museum. I mean sure I tried to steal a couple things but I mean c’mon, they stole it first.
Next we got uhh what was his name… Dyslexic or something? Oh right Dynamo. More like Dork heheh. Reminds me of this scrawny guy back inside. Always had his nose buried in a book. Didn't last long. Guys like that never do.
Oh and Abrams is there too I guess. I gotta admit if I was a nerd that book would be tempting. But I ain’t getting on the bad side of a guy with muscles like that, as hot as they are. Overall not the worst people I suppose, at least I don’t owe any of them money.
“Tch, can’t believe we have to work with the likes of you Vyper. Seriously I thought the patron would be somewhat careful in who they choose when it comes to picking assets. Must’ve been desperate.” Paradox remarked. Oh typical of her to think of herself as some professional.
“Yeah well clearly them choosin’ me just shows the skill I got.” I shot back.
“Skill? And just how many times have you been to jail? You’re an insult to my profession.”
“Yeah and how many times have I broken out? I may get caught but this gal is slippery.”
“You know good criminals don’t get caught in the first place right? Honestly just do us a favour and-”
“Alright enough you two! We’re here for a reason.” Abram announces, standing tall and walking to the front of the room. “The patron has chosen us all for a reason and promised us all something in return. I for one need that wish and none of you are going to screw this up for me with your pathetic disagreements.”
Whatever man she started it.
“Now the ritual is in three months. We have been assembled now to begin training and discuss strategy. The patron has made it clear that there will be opposition so we best be prepared.”
“Ah what’s there to strategise? Slide in give, give ‘em a rat-a-tat-tat, kill the other patron bam, free wish” I blurted.
“No wonder why you get chucked in jail so much,” Paradox jabbed while making a slight head roll motion, most likely rolling her eyes under her mask.
“Can we not do this?” Ivy butted in. “C’mon we need to work together if we are going to do this. Even if it means working with Vyper.”
There it was.
Like I was some disease everyone had to put up with.
Yeah screw you too Ivy.
“Yeah, a real treat you guys are getting working with me. Should feel special” I replied.
“Whatever. I’m heading off, it’s getting late and I have some things I need to do.” Paradox declared, gracefully standing and walking out of the room. Dynamo quickly followed her, seeming to want to ask her some things, probably some nerd shit.
Silver shortly followed after, no doubt eager to get her hands on some alcohol. Abrams then left.
Great.
Everyone had left.
Everyone except Ivy.
The person who arguably hated me the most.
She hadn't moved.
Just stood there watching me with those beady, bat-like eyes.
What, had I accidentally turned her to stone?
“What? You got something to say to me?” I asked, staring back.
“Don’t mistake my willingness to work with you as me liking you.” She responded.
"Aww. Here I was thinking we were becoming friends."
Ivy crossed her arms.
"The second this ritual is over, things go back to normal."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning I get you arrested again. I haven’t forgotten what you’ve done."
“Yeah see you’re gonna need to be more specific because I’ve done Loooads o’ things.”
“Increíble. no puedo creerla.”
And with that she left before I could understand what she even said.
Yeah, working with these people was gonna be just great.
Walking home was about as mundane as usual. Typical rush of people walking by or blurs of cars flying past. I made my way back as quickly as possible, trying to avoid the looks I’d get. Typical. Apparently being a gorgon was still an odd sight to these idiots. At least I was home. Well what I call home anyway. It was a rundown place with admittedly dodgy apartments, even by my standards. I took my key out and unlocked the door, with the usual budging it open with my shoulder. Damn thing was always stuck.
There wasn’t much inside because, well lets be honest, getting money in prison is a little hard and finding work afterwards is twice so. Still I couldn’t complain. The mattress I had sitting in the corner was a little flat but it beat sleeping on the floor. And as much as I wanted to just go crash on it, the burden of having to eat made itself known. Shifting over to the fridge, I opened it and glanced inside. Hmm, seems like we’re low on food. Typical. Welp two minute noodles it was again I suppose.
After that riveting meal, I flopped onto the mattress and laid there, staring at the wall. My mind began to wonder about several things. It first went to how much I hated these living conditions. It was better than nothing but god. What I wouldn’t give for something better. It was kinda shit if I was being honest, but hey gotta stay positive.
Maybe that’s what I could use that wish for. Nah but if I wish for better stuff I’d just end up back here eventually. Plus it seemed like a waste. The truth was I didn’t have an idea on what I really wanted. I wanted lots of things. But choosing just one? I wonder what the others will wish for. Not that I care so much as I want some ideas. Ivy would probably want everyone to be her friend or some shit. Not sure about the others but it's probably all just as lame. If only I had someone to talk this over with. Maybe I could wish for some friends. Like proper ones that won’t stab me in the back. Just one friend that won’t betray me and actually trust me.
…
Nah.
Clearly I’m better off alone anyway. Wishing for friends seems like a waste.
Idk I just want a new… everything. A new life. Get away from this sketchy background and leave it behind. A new me. Start over. Yeah that sounds good. The freedom I could have from starting over sounds great.
And with that final thought I began to drift off to sleep. Wishfully dreaming about what my future might hold if I got that wish.
