Chapter Text
The island had a specific quality in the late afternoon.
Not like New York.
New York's late afternoon was gold filtered through glass and steel and reflected off surfaces that had been built for function and produced beauty accidentally. This was different. This was the specific golden hour of somewhere that had been warm since morning and was now settling into the richest version of itself, the sun lower and heavier and doing things with the light that only happened when there was ocean on both sides of the road and palm trees breaking it into moving pieces and nothing between you and the sky except the air.
Adi had been at the other villa for three hours.
He needed to get back.
He had told his pap he'd be back by 6.
It was 5:41.
The villa was twenty minutes away on the coastal boulevard if you drove it the way the island intended which was slowly and with appreciation for the scenery.
Adi was not going to drive it that way.
He found Aether in the car park of the other villa exactly where he'd left her.
Deep navy under the late afternoon sun.
He stopped for exactly one second when he saw her.
He always stopped for one second.
Not consciously. Just the specific pause of someone who had not yet gotten used to the fact that this car existed and was his and probably never fully would get used to it because some things were designed to stay remarkable.
The sun hit the paint the way it always hit the paint.
Not flat. Not just reflective. Something more than that. The deep navy catching the gold of the late afternoon light and doing something with it, holding it, warming it, producing a color that was no longer quite navy and not quite gold but was somewhere between them that didn't have a name and didn't need one.
The same thing the sun did to his skin.
He had never said this out loud.
He didn't need to.
He got in.
The interior was cool from the shade of the car park and then warm from the sun through the windshield and Adi settled into the seat with the specific ease of someone in a space that had been made for them.
His hands found the wheel.
He was in a white linen shirt, sleeves pushed up, the kind of shirt that existed for exactly this kind of afternoon on exactly this kind of island. Dark shorts. Nothing complicated. The kind of outfit that on someone with his build and his height and his skin in this specific light was not trying to be anything and therefore was everything.
He looked at the boulevard through the windshield.
Coastal road. Two lanes each direction. Palm trees on both sides throwing moving shadows across the tarmac in the late afternoon wind. The ocean visible between the trees on the right, flashing blue and gold every few meters. The road ahead long and straight and then curving and then long again.
He started the engine.
The GT3 came alive under him.
Not loudly. Not the aggressive announcement of something trying to be noticed. Just the specific sound of something with serious engineering being asked to wake up and waking up completely, the custom engine settling into its idle with the low specific note of something that knew what it was and had no need to prove it.
Adi pulled out of the car park.
Onto the boulevard.
And for approximately forty five seconds he drove it exactly the way the island intended.
Slow. Appreciative. Both hands on the wheel.
Then the road opened up ahead of him.
Long and straight and gold in the late afternoon light with the ocean on the right throwing light back at the sky and the palm trees on both sides throwing shadows across the tarmac and nothing ahead of him except road and light and the specific feeling of a straight stretch that was asking a question.
Adi answered it.
The acceleration was not dramatic.
That was the thing about it that nobody who hadn't driven something like this understood. The drama was not in the sound or the movement or anything external. The drama was in the physics of it. The specific feeling of weight transferring and grip loading and then the road beginning to move under you at a rate that recalibrated everything.
He went through the gears cleanly.
One, Two, Three.
The boulevard coming at him faster now, the palm tree shadows strobing across the windshield, the ocean flashing between the trees in longer and longer pieces as the speed increased, the whole coastal scene compressing into something that was more feeling than image.
Fourth.
The GT3 settled into it the way things settled when they had been built for exactly this, not straining, not performing, just doing the thing it had been made to do with the specific ease of something operating within its actual capabilities rather than at their edge.
The sun hit the hood
The deep navy of it catching the gold the way it always did, the paint doing the thing, warming and deepening and producing the color that existed in this specific light and nowhere else.
Adi's face in the same light
The caramel skin catching it the same way. The golden hour doing to his face what it did to the car's finish, finding the warmth in it and returning it amplified, the jaw and the cheekbones and the wavy hair pushed back slightly from the speed with the windows down, all of it in the same late afternoon gold as the car beneath him.
Forged from the same fire
Both of them
Moving through the same light at the same speed on the same coastal boulevard in the same August afternoon.
He came to the first curve
Not sharp, A long sweeping curve that followed the coastline, the road banking slightly, the ocean opening up on the right into a full unobstructed view for the length of the curve before the palm trees came back.
He didn't slow down the way the curve suggested he should.
He read it instead
The way he read everything. The specific Adi thing of assessing before committing, the full information gathered in the seconds before the decision, and then the commitment total and without reservation.
He carried the speed into the curve
The GT3 responded
The weight shifting, the rear loading, the front pulling through the arc with the precision of something engineered for exactly this kind of corner at exactly this kind of speed, and the ocean through the passenger window was a single continuous sweep of blue and gold for the full four seconds the curve lasted.
Four seconds
Blue and gold
The car and the light and the road and the water all of it moving together.
Then the straight again
Then traffic
There were three cars ahead of him, a white SUV in the right lane going at the pace of people enjoying the coastal drive which was approximately forty kilometers under what Adi was currently doing.
A rental car in the left lane, a local truck somewhere ahead of both of them
Adi did not slow down
He assessed
The gap between the SUV and the left lane barrier. Sufficient. The rental car's trajectory. Predictable. The truck's speed. Consistent.
He moved left
Cleanly, One motion, The GT3 sliding into the gap between the rental car and the SUV with the specific precision of something that had been placed rather than driven, the margins exact, the commitment total.
The SUV driver looked left
Saw the deep navy of Aether passing them at a speed that the coastal boulevard had not been designed for and almost certainly had opinions about.
Adi was already past them, Past the rental car, The truck ahead, He went right.
Another gap. Narrower than the first. The kind of gap that existed for exactly long enough if you had read it correctly from far enough back and had not second guessed yourself at any point between the reading and the execution.
He had read it correctly
He did not second guess himself
The truck was behind him
The boulevard ahead was open
He let Aether breathe
The final stretch to the villa was a long straight descent toward the water, the road dropping slightly, the ocean filling the entire windshield at the end of it where the boulevard curved left and the villa sat behind the curve on the cliff above the water.
The sun was lower now
Doing different things with the light
The shadows longer. The gold deeper. The specific quality of an August afternoon that had been beautiful all day and was now becoming something else, something richer and more final, the last version of the day before evening took it.
Adi came down the straight
The speed came down with it
Not because he was finished. Because the villa was at the bottom and his papa had eyes that saw everything and his dad would hear the engine from inside and both of those things were facts he was accounting for.
He came through the villa gate at a speed that was technically acceptable
Technically
Parked Aether in the shade of the villa's car port, Cut the engine.
The GT3 went quiet
He sat for a moment
Just sat
In the specific way he sat after something that had been exactly what it needed to be, the specific stillness of someone who had asked a question and received a complete answer.
He looked at the dashboard
5:58
Two minutes to 6.
He got out.
The evening air was warm and ocean-scented and different from the air in the car, thicker and softer, the island settling into its evening the way the afternoon had settled into its golden hour.
He looked back at Aether in the shade.
The deep navy without the sun on it was different.
Still itself. Still Aether. But waiting for the light the way some things waited for the light, holding their full quality in reserve until the conditions were right to show it.
He knew that feeling
He turned toward the villa, Walked up the steps, Pushed the door open
"You're late," Anastasia said immediately from somewhere inside without looking up from whatever she was doing.
"I'm two minutes early," Adi said.
"The vibe says late," she said.
"The clock says early," he said.
"ADI," his dad's voice from somewhere deeper in the villa. "Is that you."
"Yes dad," Adi said.
A pause
"You drove fast," his dad said.
Not a question
Adi looked at the door he had just come through.
At the boulevard visible through the villa's open side beyond it.
At the last of the golden hour light sitting on the water below.
"The road was clear," he said
From inside his papa said nothing
Which meant his papa knew
Which meant his papa had heard the engine on the descent and had done the math and had filed it and would address it later in the specific Brandon way which was completely and without drama and at a time of Brandon's choosing.
Adi came inside
The villa was warm and full and smelled like whatever Elias had been cooking and like the ocean and like the specific warmth of a family in a space that had become theirs over the course of the summer.
Everything felt like theirs when all of them were in it together.
He sat down
Leigh looked at him from the other end of the room with the expression she had when she had registered something and was choosing not to comment.
He looked back at her
She went back to her book
"How fast," Elias said from the kitchen. Not looking up from the pan.
"Normal speed," Adi said.
"How fast," Elias said again. Same tone. Same pan.
Adi looked at the ceiling
"Fast," he said.
Elias nodded once
Like this was the answer he expected and had already processed.
"Food's in twenty," he said.
"Okay," Adi said.
And that was that
The villa went back to being itself
Warm and coastal and full and theirs
Aether in the car port outside in the shade
Waiting for tomorrow's light.
The summer villa dinner was the kind of dinner that happened when too many people who loved each other were in the same place for too long which was loud and warm and overlapping and nobody was fully listening to one conversation because four conversations were happening simultaneously and all of them were worth listening to.
The table was full
Every chair taken
The parents on one end doing what parents did at these things which was talk about things the kids were not fully supposed to hear and hear everything the kids were saying anyway.
The kids on the other end doing what they always did which was exist at full volume in the specific way of people who had grown up together and had no performance left between them.
Elias had cooked half of what was on the table.
This was simply what happened at dinners now.
Nobody questioned it
Nobody would ever question it
The food was extraordinary and that was the end of that conversation.
Adi was eating
This was important context
He was eating with the focused appreciation of someone who took food seriously which he always had and always would and Kenji beside him was doing the same thing and Noah across from him was drawing something on a napkin with one hand and eating with the other which was simply Noah and had been simply Noah since he was six years old in Gareth and Kayden's garden.
The conversation at the table was about Brighton Island.
Specifically about the upcoming year
Specifically about university
Specifically about who was going where and when and the logistics of all of it which was a conversation that happened every summer because every summer someone new was starting and this summer it was Kenji and Noah and Adi who was seventeen and had one more year but was going to Brighton Island anyway because the trio went everywhere together and that had been true since they were six years old and was going to keep being true and to be with Kenji and Noah, Adi had skipped one grade when he was 8.
"So Kenji Adi Noah you're both starting TKU in September," Remington said from the parents end. Confirming. The way Remington confirmed things which was precisely and without fuss.
"Yes," Kenji said.
"And you're going to be at the Elites mansion with everyone else," Ilya said beside him. Not a question. Just the assumed next part of the sentence.
Kenji looked at Adi, Noah looked up from the napkin
Adi was eating, He took one more bite, Put his fork down.
Looked up at the table with the complete unbothered calm of someone about to say something they had already fully processed and were at complete peace with.
"We're staying at the Heathens mansion," Adi said.
The table continued for approximately one second.
Then it didn't
The four simultaneous conversations stopped.
All of them
At the same time
The specific silence of a full dinner table when something has landed that nobody was prepared for.
Nikolai looked up from his food
Brandon put his glass down
Landon who had been in a conversation with Jeremy went very still.
Jeremy looked at Adi
"Say that again," Anastasia said, from somewhere down the table, because Anastasia always said what everyone was thinking first and loudest.
"The Heathens mansion," Adi said. Same tone. Same energy. Like he was simply confirming a fact about the world that had always been true and he was just now reporting it.
"The three of you," Brandon said
"Yes papa," Adi said
"Alone," Brandon said
"Yes papa," Adi said
"In the Heathens mansion," Brandon said.
"Yes papa," Adi said
Brandon looked at Nikolai
Nikolai looked at Brandon
Something passed between them that was fast and wordless and complete and landed on both of them differently, on Nikolai with something that was trying very hard not to be what it was which was immediately and completely delighted, and on Brandon with the expression that was completely composed and covering several things that were moving very quickly underneath it.
"Why," Leigh said. Calm. Direct. The Leigh way.
"Because it's the Heathens mansion," Adi said. Like this was a complete and sufficient answer.
"That's not a reason," Anastasia said.
"It's the only reason," Adi said.
"Adi," Brandon said.
"Papa," Adi said.
"The Elites mansion has more space," Brandon said. "Everyone is there. It makes more sense logistically—"
"Papa," Adi said.
"Yes," Brandon said.
"We want to live in the Heathens mansion," Adi said. Simply. The tone that had been closing conversations since he was thirteen months old with a dinosaur spoon and had only gotten more effective with age.
The table was quiet for a moment
Then Kenji said "the Heathens mansion has better energy and also our type vibe."
Everyone looked at Kenji
Kenji looked back at the table with the complete unbothered calm of someone who stood by their statement entirely.
"Better energy and your type vibe," Killian said slowly, from the parents end. With an expression that was doing several things.
"Yes," Kenji said.
"You've never been inside it," Killian said.
"I've heard about it," Kenji said.
"From who," Killian said.
Kenji looked at Adi
Adi was eating again
He had picked his fork back up and was eating with the focused appreciation he always brought to Elias's food and was not looking at anyone specifically.
Killian looked at Adi
"Adi," Killian said
"Uncle Kill," Adi said, without looking up.
"What have you been telling them," Killian said.
"Nothing specific," Adi said
"Adi," Killian said again
Adi looked up
Met Killian's eyes
The specific Adi look that was completely open and completely giving nothing away simultaneously, the one that was entirely his own and had driven people insane since he was old enough to deploy it with intention.
"I just said it had good energy," Adi said.
Eli beside Killian looked at his husband
Killian looked at Eli
Something moved between them
"He knows something," Killian said
"He always knows something," Eli said
"About the mansion specifically," Killian said.
"Killian," Jeremy said from further down. Quiet. The Jeremy quiet that meant he had already processed something several steps ahead and had arrived at a conclusion.
Killian looked at Jeremy
Jeremy looked at Adi
Adi was eating
Noah had gone back to drawing on the napkin.
Kenji was also eating
The three of them in a row doing completely normal dinner things with the energy of people who had not just detonated something at a family dinner and were simply having a meal.
"TKU," Nikolai said suddenly.
The table looked at him
"You said Heathens mansion," Nikolai said to Adi. "Heathens mansion is TKU territory."
"Yes dad," Adi said
"You're going to TKU," Nikolai said.
"Yes dad," Adi said.
"Not REU," Nikolai said.
"No dad," Adi said.
Nikolai looked at Brandon
Brandon looked at the table
At the dinner that had been a perfectly normal dinner forty five seconds ago.
"Everyone goes to REU," Anastasia said. With the energy of someone stating a fact. "We all go to REU. That's just. That's the thing. That's what we do."
"Elias goes to TKU," Adi said
"Elias is different," Anastasia said.
"Zelen goes to TKU," Adi said.
"Zelen is also different," Anastasia said.
"Alice goes to TKU," Adi said.
"ADI," Anastasia said.
"Ana," Adi said.
"You're supposed to come to REU, with me Leigh Kael and everyone" Anastasia said. With the specific Anastasia energy of someone who had planned something and was finding out the plan had not been communicated to one of its key participants. "We talked about this. I talked about this. We were going to be togethe—"
"Ana," Adi said.
"What," Anastasia said.
"I'm going to TKU," Adi said.
"But-"
"And I'm staying in the Heathens mansion," Adi said.
"With just the three of you," Anastasia said. "Alone. No supervision."
"Yes," Adi said.
"In the Heathens mansion," Anastasia said.
"Yes," Adi said.
"THE Heathens mansion," Anastasia said. Like she was emphasizing something that Adi might have missed.
"The one and only," Adi said.
Anastasia looked at Leigh
Leigh was looking at Adi with the expression she had when she was thinking about something carefully before she said it which meant she had already said it in her head three times and was editing.
"Why specifically the Heathens mansion," Leigh said.
"Because it's ours," Adi said.
The table went quiet again
Different from before
Not the shocked quiet
Something else
"Ours," Nikolai said.
"Dad's," Adi said. Looking at Nikolai. "And uncle Jeremy's. And uncle Killian's. And uncle Gareth's. And uncle Vaughn's." A pause. "It's where it all started."
The parents end of the table was very still
Jeremy was looking at Adi with an expression that was entirely Jeremy, giving nothing away and communicating everything.
Gareth had put his fork down
Kayden beside him was looking at Adi with the expression he had when something had landed and he was sitting with it.
Killian was looking at his son Seth who was at the other end of the table and Seth was already looking back at his father and something moved between them that was just theirs.
Nikolai looked at his son
At seventeen year old Adi King-Sokolov at the dinner table in the summer villa saying it's where it all started with the complete certainty of someone who knew exactly what they were talking about and meant every word of it.
Nikolai held his gaze for a moment
Then he looked at Brandon
Brandon was already looking at him
The thing passed between them
The specific one
Then Brandon looked at Adi.
"The Heathens mansion hasn't been properly inhabited in 19 years," Brandon said. In the voice that was not a no and was not a yes and was Brandon gathering information before he committed to either.
"I know," Adi said.
"It'll need work," Brandon said.
"I know," Adi said.
"The three of you alone," Brandon said.
"Yes papa," Adi said.
"With no one else in the building," Brandon said.
"Yes papa," Adi said.
Brandon looked at Kenji
Kenji met his gaze with the direct unbothered confidence of someone who had Remington and Ilya as parents and had never learned to find Brandon King's full attention intimidating.
"You want this too ken," Brandon said to Kenji.
"Yes uncle bran," Kenji said.
Brandon looked at Noah
Noah had put the napkin down
He was looking at Brandon with the quiet steady gaze that was entirely Noah, the one that saw everything and showed only what it chose to show.
"Yes uncle bran," Noah said. Before Brandon asked.
Brandon looked at all three of them
At the row of them sitting there, seventeen and eighteen years old, completely certain, completely together, completely themselves.
He looked at Nikolai one more time
Nikolai was looking at Adi
At the son who had just said it's where it all started and had meant it the way Nikolai had always meant things which was completely and with the full weight of everything behind it.
"I know everything about the mansion dad," Adi had said.
Everything
Nikolai looked at Brandon
Brandon exhaled once
Very quietly
Then he picked up his glass
"We'll discuss the arrangements," Brandon said.
Which meant yes
Everyone at the table knew it meant yes
Anastasia made a sound
"DISCUSS THE ARRANGEMENTS MEANS YES," she announced to the table. "HE SAID YES. BRANDON KING SAID YES TO THE HEATHENS MANSION."
"I said we'll discuss—" Brandon started.
"IT MEANS YES," Anastasia said.
"Ana," Brandon said.
"IT ALWAYS MEANS YES WHEN HE SAYS DISCUSS," Anastasia said. To the table. To the universe. To anyone within hearing range. "ASK ANYONE. ASK DAD. DAD TELL PAPA."
Nikolai was already grinning
The too big one
The one that had no containment in it anywhere
"She's not wrong lotus flower," Nikolai said.
"Nikolai," Brandon said
"She's really not wrong," Nikolai said.
Brandon looked at the ceiling
The metaphorical one
Then at his son
Adi was eating again
Completely unbothered
Like he had always known how this conversation was going to end and had simply been waiting for everyone else to arrive at the same conclusion.
Which he had
Which was very him
Which was always going to be very him
"The Heathens mansion," Zelen said suddenly from somewhere down the table.
Everyone looked at him
Zelen was looking at his food
Then he looked up
"The wifi situation," he said. "Is it good."
The table stared at him
"It's been empty for years," Zelen said. "I need to know the wifi situation before I have feelings about this."
Elias beside him pressed his mouth together.
Adi looked at Zelen
"I'll get you the wifi situation," Adi said.
"Good," Zelen said.
And went back to his food
Landon who had said nothing this entire time looked at Jeremy beside him.
Jeremy looked back
Something passed between them
"He knows about the fire," Landon said. Very quietly. Just for Jeremy.
"He knows about everything," Jeremy said. Just as quietly.
Landon looked at Adi down the table
At his nephew eating his dinner with the complete peace of someone who had gotten exactly what he came for and was now simply enjoying the food.
"Of course he does," Landon said.
And picked up his fork
And said nothing else
Because some things didn't need more words than that.
