Work Text:
The party was supposed to be a celebration.
At least that was what everyone kept saying.
A celebration.
Not a goodbye.
Definitely not a goodbye.
Unfortunately, nobody seemed to believe that.
Because after twenty-two years of adventures, trouble, friendship, family dinners, fishing trips, life lessons, and countless memories...
Two important chapters were ending.
Tom and Becky were moving away.
Freshly married.
Tom had graduated from military school.
A new assignment awaited them across the country.
A new home.
A new beginning.
At almost the same time, Huck had accepted a full-time journalism position on the West Coast.
His dream job.
The kind of opportunity he'd worked years for.
The kind of opportunity Michael and Y/N had always encouraged him to pursue.
Which didn't stop it from hurting.
Just a little.
Or a lot.
The town had decided that if three of their favorite people were leaving, they deserved a proper sendoff.
Which naturally became a massive event.
Because Tom Sawyer had taught everyone how to throw a party years ago.
Now everyone was using those lessons against him.
Tables filled the park.
Food covered every available surface.
Neighbors arrived.
Friends arrived.
Former teachers arrived.
Even people Tom and Huck hadn't seen in years appeared.
The entire afternoon felt like one giant scrapbook of memories.
Tom spent half the day hugging people.
Becky spent the other half trying not to cry.
Neither succeeded.
Huck wasn't doing much better.
Though he claimed he had "something in his eye."
Nobody believed him.
Especially not Y/N.
"You're crying."
"No."
"Huck."
"It's allergies."
"There are no flowers nearby."
"...Strong allergies."
Y/N laughed and pulled him into a hug.
At twenty-three years old, Huck was taller than her now.
Stronger too.
But somehow hugs from Mom still worked exactly the same.
He hugged her back.
Just a little longer than usual.
Neither mentioned it.
Across the park, Genesis and Henri were struggling with the reality of the situation.
Genesis had spent the last hour attached to Becky.
Refusing to let go.
The ten-year-old looked heartbroken.
"You have to visit."
"We will."
Becky promised.
"A lot."
"A lot."
Henri folded his arms.
The twelve-year-old was trying very hard to act mature.
Unfortunately, his red eyes gave him away.
Tom noticed immediately.
"Hey."
Henri looked up.
"You still my groomsman?"
"Obviously."
"Good."
Tom smiled.
"That doesn't change."
Henri nodded.
A little emotional.
A little relieved.
As evening approached, everyone gathered near the small stage.
The sun was beginning to set.
The party was winding down.
And everybody knew what was coming.
The goodbye.
The part nobody wanted.
Michael stood beside Y/N.
His arm around her shoulders.
Jim stood nearby.
Genesis leaned against Becky.
Henri stood beside Tom.
Huck hovered close enough to the family.
Which he did.
Y/N looked at all of them.
The children who weren't really children anymore.
Tom.
The twelve-year-old prankster who had somehow become a soldier and husband.
Huck.
The scared boy who once slept in trees and doubted his own worth.
Now a journalist preparing to chase stories across the country.
She felt pride.
And sadness.
And love.
All at once.
Finally, she stepped forward.
The crowd grew quiet.
Because everyone knew Y/N had something to say.
She smiled.
A little sadly.
"A long time ago..."
Tom immediately looked suspicious.
"Oh no."
The crowd laughed.
Y/N ignored him.
"A long time ago, a wise teacher gave his students some advice."
Tom's eyes widened.
Huck immediately knew where this was going.
So did Michael.
Y/N looked directly at the two young men.
Then at Becky.
And finally said:
"Believe in yourselves."
The park fell silent.
"Dream."
A pause.
"Try."
Another pause.
"Do good."
The words hung in the evening air.
Simple.
Powerful.
True.
Y/N smiled.
"You've already done all four."
Tom blinked rapidly.
Huck looked away.
Neither trusted themselves to speak.
So Y/N continued.
"You don't need us to tell you who you are anymore."
A glance toward Huck.
"You know your worth."
Huck swallowed.
Hard.
Then toward Tom.
"You know the kind of man you want to be."
Tom nodded.
And finally Becky.
"And you know how much you're loved."
Becky wiped away tears.
The crowd applauded softly.
Not because the speech was over.
Because everyone agreed.
Then came the hardest part.
The airport.
The final goodbye.
The place where it all became real.
Suitcases waited nearby.
Boarding announcements echoed through the terminal.
The moment had arrived.
Tom hugged Henri first.
Then Genesis.
Both younger siblings cried.
Tom cried too.
Though he would deny it forever.
Becky hugged everyone.
Including Y/N.
Who whispered:
"Take care of each other."
"We will."
Becky promised.
Then Huck stepped forward.
And suddenly neither he nor Tom knew what to say.
Because twenty years of friendship didn't fit into a goodbye.
Not really.
Tom finally laughed.
"Well."
"Well."
"You gonna call?"
"No."
Tom looked offended.
"I'm serious."
Huck grinned.
"So am I."
Tom rolled his eyes.
Then immediately pulled Huck into a hug.
The kind of hug only brothers gave.
Tight.
Unapologetic.
Years of memories packed into a few seconds.
Fishing trips.
Treehouses.
Pranks.
Arguments.
Adventures.
Growing up together.
Finally they stepped back.
Neither entirely trusting their voice.
"Love you, brother."
Tom said quietly.
Huck smiled.
"Love you too."
Then Tom turned toward Y/N.
His expression immediately softened.
The same expression he'd had as a boy whenever he needed advice.
Or help.
Or a place to belong.
Without warning, he wrapped her in a hug.
A tight one.
The kind that said everything words couldn't.
"Thank you."
Y/N hugged him back.
"For what?"
Tom laughed softly.
"For all of it."
The words were simple.
But she understood.
For the dinners.
The lectures.
The support.
The love.
The family.
For being his Mr. Feeny.
When he needed one most.
Before stepping back, Tom kissed her cheek.
Just like a son would.
Then smiled.
"Love you."
Y/N's eyes immediately filled.
"Love you too, Tomfoolery."
Tom groaned.
"Really?"
"Always."
The nickname stayed.
Just as it should.
Huck laughed.
Then stepped forward.
Unlike Tom, he didn't need words.
He simply hugged Y/N.
Holding on for a moment.
The same way he'd done years ago when he was scared.
The same way he'd done after being adopted.
The same way he'd done after every important moment in his life.
Then he kissed her cheek too.
A quiet thank-you.
A son's thank-you.
For choosing him.
For loving him.
For giving him a home.
For giving him a family.
When he stepped back, both were crying.
Neither cared.
"Make us proud."
Y/N whispered.
Huck smiled.
"You already did that."
Michael shook both young men's hands.
Then pulled them into hugs anyway.
Jim did the same.
Genesis cried harder.
Henri pretended he wasn't crying.
Nobody believed him.
Finally the boarding call came.
The last one.
Tom took Becky's hand.
Huck picked up his bag.
The three of them turned toward the gate.
Then looked back one final time.
At the family waiting for them.
At home.
At the people who helped make them who they were.
And with smiles through tears, they waved.
Then walked forward.
Toward airplanes.
Toward careers.
Toward marriages.
Toward futures.
Toward lives of their own.
And as Y/N watched them disappear through the gate, she felt something unexpected.
Not loss.
Not really.
Because this wasn't an ending.
It was proof.
Proof that the little boys she'd once worried about had become good men.
Men who believed in themselves.
Dreamed.
Tried.
Did good.
Exactly as she'd hoped they would.
And somewhere ahead, new adventures were waiting for them.
Just as they always had.
