Work Text:

Sitting at his desk at the Daily Planet, Clark stared at his blank monitor, deeply lost in his thoughts. There were moments when he wished for normalcy. To be able to appreciate the silence of the world without being overwhelmed by the cries for help. It was the small, selfish part of him. He quickly dismissed the thought as it entered his mind. In his perfect utopia, he envisions a universe of complete peace and happiness where no one suffers, and humanity thrives.

He hears them before he sees them. Jimmy and Lois seem to be in some sort of heated discussion about the sighting of Superman in Gotham. They quickly pass his desk on their way to the coffee station.

A small chime from his pocket pulls him from his thoughts. He reaches for it and it isn’t a text message but a reminder. 5:00 PM. Time to leave.

Sliding the phone away, Clark packs up his bag and steps out into the bustling Metropolis evening. He is a man in a hurry; every part of him wishes he were already by your side, but he has a few essential stops to make first. Out of pure, unbroken habit, he visits the local flower shop to pick up a bundle of your favorite flowers. From there, he ducks into the small corner shop down the street, gathering the exact snacks you always loved.

Holding his coat tight against the evening wind, he walks away from the city noise, toward the heavy silence on the edge of town. He stops at the base of a familiar stone, gently setting the snacks on the grave beside the vibrant petals.

“Honey, I’m home” he whispers into the stillness of the graveyard.
