Chapter 1: New beginnings

Chapter Text

It was a peaceful day in the Omatikaya Kingdom. The eldest prince, Neteyam was practicing his archery in his personal range.
He wore a tight, sleeveless, turtle neck shirt and loose navy blue pants with his brown quiver wrapped around his chest. He
was finishing up his session, when he heard his fathers voice coming from the window on the second floor of the palace.
“Neteyam! me and your mother can’t find your siblings, come flying with us to find them!” Neteyam nodded his head with a
quick “Yes sir” as he gathered his arrows from the target and ran inside.

As the three of them were flying, Neteyams brother, Lo’ak spoke through the coms everyone in the family has an an accessory
In order to communicate. “I see some guys, they look like avatars but they’re dressed in camo.” Neteyam immediatly looked at his father who pressed the speak button on his comms. “Where are you?” Neteyam could tell his brother hesitated to answer, but got a response. “We’re at the old battle field.” Neteyam showed his parents a shortcut and they landed out of view.

The boy was told to stay put, but knew they could need help at any moment so he didn’t listen. As he was silently walking through the trees, the sun began to set. His eye was caught by a soldier, who had his gun aimed directly at Neteyams unaware mother. Before he had a moment to think, he quietly took out the soldier with his bow. Suddenly, he heard a soldier yell “NA’VI” and shots began to be fired. He quickly ran to his siblings and found them all handcuffed, he cut their restraints and rushed them away while their parents fought. Once they got far enough, they heard a soldier tell the rest to fall back, and they all retreated home.

A few hours now had went by, the kids had finally calmed down when Neteyam noticed his three younger siblings, Kiri, Lo’ak, who are 15 years old and Tuk, who is 8, listening in on their parents conversation through their bedroom door. Neteyam walked over to listen too and heard something he never imagined he would. His father, Toruk Makto himself, telling his mother that they can’t keep their family and their people in danger anymore. He decided that they need to leave the kingdom and go to another in order to be safe. Neteyam was upset, understandably, but knew his father knew best. Lo'ak, on the other hand was angry. He didn’t want to leave everything he knows.

A ceremony was held for Jake to pass his throne to a man named Tarsem. Neteyam was quiet the whole ceremony. Being heir was never that important to him, but he had always thought it’d be him who his father passed the throne to. However, he stayed silent. As they flew to the Awa'atlu, which their parents just recently told them they were going, Neteyam couldn’t help but look back. He knew that his heart would miss the forest. Miss the Omatikaya people. He had no idea what this place had in store for him.

When they landed, they stood on a beach, in front of a large white and light blue palace with hints and sparkles of Orange and pink. The royal family came out and Neteyams parents had a long conversation with Tonowari and Ronal. During the conversation, Neteyam saw as two boys emerged from behind the king and queen. The one in front, considering his height and demeanor, was clearly the eldest son.

The two eldest boys made eye contact and Neteyam nodded his head as a greeting. However, the other didn’t move a muscle. Neteyams eyes widened. He had never received such bad manners from another royal child, but the other seemed unphased. Ao’nung walked around Neteyam and Lo'ak, seemingly studying them. His younger brother was walking next to him and as the two stepped behind the boys Neteyam heard laughter. “Look at their tails!” “They’re so small!” This went on for only a few minutes until a girl walked over, she seemed to have just gotten done swimming. Neteyam looked at Lo’ak and saw that the girl had caught his little brothers eye. The girl walked over to her brothers and hit the eldest on his arm. “Ao’nung! Do not tease them.”

Neteyam’s ears softly fluttered. “So, this is Ao’nung.” He thought to himself. Then, he heard another name. “Tsireya, look at them! Even Roxto agrees they're freaks." Complete with a chuckle. “The other boy is Roxto, and the girl is Tsireya.” He thought again while taking a glance at Lo’ak. The parents came to an agreement that they Sully’s would stay with the Metkayina in the palace.

Tonowari nodded his head. “My sons, Aonung, Roxto and my daughter, Tsireya will teach your children our ways.” Neteyam watched as Ao’nung quickly walked to his father and protested. “ Father why do we-“ the boy was cut off. “It has been decided.” Ao’nung loudly scoffed and began walking away, but not before he stopped and looked at Neteyam and Lo’ak with a very angry look. He then quickly turned and walked into the palace as Tsireya stepped in front of the four Sully children. “I will show you all to your rooms!”

The girls, Kiri and Tuk had a shared room, while the boys each had their own. Tsireya took everyone to their rooms, naturally finishing with Neteyam as he was walking towards the back of the group. She sweetly guided him to his door, but before he walked in, she stopped him. She pointed to another room. The only other room in the same hall as Neteyams.

“That’s my brother, Ao’nungs room. Don’t go in there. He’ll get pretty mad!” Tsireya smiled and waved as she skipped back to her own room. Neteyam took a moment, he leaned on the doorframe and looked at Ao’nungs room. “What an odd boy.” He whispered to himself. Just then, Ao’nung calmly walked out of his bedroom but stopped when he saw Neteyam looking. “Can I help you?” The prince scowled. Neteyam shook his head gently “I need nothing from you." He responded calmly. Ao’nung gave him a weirded out look. He then looked Neteyam up and down as he scoffed and rolled his eyes as he walked away. Neteyam walked into his own room, closing the door behind him. “I am going to hate it here, aren’t I..” He whispered to himself as he grabbed his things and began to unpack.
