Chapter Text
Mike found his way onto the courtyard, he didn’t necessarily have any reason on why he was out here. It’s not like he had friends to hang out with either. He was new at Wawanakwa High, so he didn’t really know anyone. For now, he decided to keep his head down. His goal was to not draw any attention.
Well, instead it seemed the attention drawed him. From afar, there was this brown haired boy. Short, scrawny, and awkward looking. Maybe this was his chance to make a friend? The boy sat not too far from Mike, on the ground, instead of the bench for some reason.
Mike blinked, watching the boy sigh in annoyance. He tilted his head, until he saw him pull out a soggy notebook. From the looks of it, it seemed like his water bottle had leaked inside his backpack. What a pain. Mike sat up straighter, clearing his throat.
“Uh, are you okay?” Mike asked, he then realized the obvious answer to the question. “Uh… sorry. Dumb question, I know—”
“Don’t worry, you’re fine..” Mickey sighed, reassuring Mike as he put his soaked notebooks to the side. “All my notes are ruined, though. Sucks to be me.”
“I understand. That once happened to me with orange juice. It was—” Mike paused for a moment. too long, obviously. Just enough for it to be disregarded. He then started speaking with a different cadence.
“People need to start making better water bottles, not these dang faulty ones! We used to have standards back in my day,” Chester complained.
Mickey tilted his head. He wasn’t exactly sure what was going on with Mike, but he’ll ignore it. For now.
“That’d be cool. But the water bottle was old, anyway,” Mickey stated, rummaging through his backpack, looking to see if anything else was damaged.
“Eh, whatever you say, kid,” Chester watched as Mickey went through his backpack. He didn’t have any personal stake in it, however, the thought of everything being ruined by a simple leak annoyed Chester greatly.
Finally, Mickey had pulled out his laptop, quickly opening it up. He whispered something Chester couldn’t quite make out, and held the power button. Mickey sighed in relief as his computer turned on.
“Thank God..” Mickey said in relief.
“Well, at least your portable computer thingy still works,” Chester commented.
“Haha, yeah. I don’t know what I would’ve done if it didn’t.” Mickey rubbed the back of his neck. He was still very confused on why Mike was suddenly acting like this, but he didn’t want to come off as rude by questioning it.
Chester suddenly blinked, the cadence in his voice going back to what he had originally presented.
“Uh, sorry. I zoned out for a second. Well, I’m glad that your laptop is fine!”
Mickey stared for a second. It happened again! He shook his head, thinking of something else to say.
“Uh, what’s your name? I didn’t quite catch it,” Mickey asked, smiling. He tried to be polite as he usually was.
Mike’s eyes widened. He hadn’t introduced himself. How rude. “Oh, right! Uh, I’m sorry. My name is Michael, but nobody calls me that. Uh, so, you can just call me Mike.”
“That’s nice. Mine’s Mickey. It’s nice to meet you!” Mickey said, raising his brow again. “Are you new here?”
“Yeah.. I suppose I am.” Mike chuckled a little.
“We can be friends if you’d like. I don’t have that many either..” Mickey shrugged.
“Oh, yeah! Of course!” Mike smiled, nodding.
Mickey stood up, holding his laptop in one hand, backpack in the other. He left his notes behind. They wouldn’t do much good, anyway.
“Well, I’ll see you around?” Mickey asked, turning back.
“Yup, mhm. I’ll see you!” Mike waved.
As Mickey walked off, he couldn’t help but wonder what was with the sudden.. shifts in Mike. It was weird. But hey, he made a friend! That was really all he needed for now.
