Chapter Text
Standing there at the gate of the ultimate school filled with ultimate students, was me.
Before we go any further, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Makoto Naegi.
I'm nothing but a hopelessly average high school student. Average on the outside, average on the inside.
I don't really have much going for me when it comes for grades, special abilities or even personality.
I mean yeah, I have hobbies and stuff I like to do, but it's not like I'm a psychic or mutant or whatever.
Like, if you asked me what my favorite song was, or my favorite movie or TV show, they'd all just be whatever's the most popular at the moment.
Even among the average, I'm completely average. So I can't even say I'm your "average heroine" type.
That's just who I am. Anyway, I figure it's always good to introduce yourself right off the bat.
But you know, if I have any kind of unique trait, so to speak...
I'd say I'm a little more tomboyish than most other girls.
Ms. Makoto Naegi,
We recently held a lottery to select one ordinary student to attend our school.
As a result, you have been selected, and we invite you to join us as the Ultimate Lucky Student.
Included is an orientation guide for Hope's Peak Academy.
"No way... This can't be serious, right?" Makoto combed through the letter that was adressed to her several times before holding it up for her parents and Komaru to confirm that she wasn't just seeing things.
Three pairs of eyes read through the invitation to Japan's government-funded school of privilege. The school that makes you set for life if you manage to graduate. The school that you can't enroll into without getting scouted first, usually due to being talented enough in an area to be considered an Ultimate. Or in the case of the Naegi household's oldest daughter, winning a lottry.
"I can't believe it! Oh, I'm so proud of you, my dear!"
"Gwa ha ha! It's the ol' Naegi Luck finally turning up for you, Makoto!"
"Eeeek! You're actually gonna get into Hope's Peak of all places, Big Sis!"
The kitchen table was livelier than it had ever been, full of cries of joy and laughter.
Well, today was the big day. Makoto was finally about to start her first semester at Hope's Peak.
And her alarm hadn't gone off.
Makoto scrambled around her room in order to get dressed, occasionally glancing at the stupid clock. It had one job. One. Job.
She pulled up a black skirt over her modesty shorts, quickly followed by a pair of knee-high socks. She then looked into the mirror as she put on her favorite hairclip, while briefly debating whether to do anything about the ahoge. It wouldn't be worth the effort, so she left it as is.
Running down to the kitchen, she grabbed some toast that Komaru had prepared in advance (thanks, Sis!) before throwing on her favorite green hoodie as well as a black blazer, with a white pin. Before leaving the house, she stomped her feet into her red sneakers.
Running across the sidewalk with the toast in her mouth, something she'll have a laugh about later, she made her way to her future school.
