The stage was due to begin, and Sua couldn't sleep. She lay awake contemplating what would happen the following evening, swallowing thickly as she considered her fate. Bringing a hand up above her face, she examinined the back of her hand- she was still staring blankly at it when she heard a knock at the door.
'Come in,' she called after considering for a moment, unsure as to who it could be at this hour. After a brief second, Mizi walked in, looking slightly awkward. 'Mizi,' Sua said delicately, smiling gently as she looked at the other girl. 'Sua,' Mizi responded, 'hi.'
'Come over,' said Sua, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. Mizi did as she said, trotting over to the bed and sitting down. They sat in silence for a while, both staring at the wall without a word. Eventually, Mizi spoke. 'Sua,' she said, 'what do you think dying feels like?' This was a question Sua often contemplated- she thought of blood, of choking, of death, of the bullet piecing her neck. That wasn't something she could tell Mizi though, so she said, 'I think death must feel like closure. Like the last page of a book.' Mizi simply hummed in response as she toyed at the hem of her nightgown. Then, she said, 'I think closure is more like a kiss, or a warm bath, than it is death. After all, getting closure is supposed to be pleasant.'
'Knowing that you're alive is more than pleasant', Sua thought but didn't say. Instead, she said, 'I suppose so,' snaked her hand across the bed to Mizi's, and grasped the other girl's hand. Mizi finally turned to look at Sua, who was stared at the floor looking slightly upset. 'Sua...' said Mizi, 'I didn't mean to worry you.' Sua looked up at Mizi and smiled insincerely. 'Don,'t worry about me, Mizi,' she said, mind full of violence, 'I'll be fine. We'll draw, and we'll be together, you and me.'
Despite her own words, she found herself picturing her bloodied body clutched in Mizi's arms, still warm but very much dead. It was then that Mizi grabbed the back of her head, pulled her in, and kissed her. Their lips crashed together and Sua's eyes widened in shock as Mizi deepened the kiss. Eventually, Mizi pulled away and said, 'there. If I go out, I won't have any regrets.' Sua thought 'what about me,' but didn't voice her concerns- Mizi had kissed her again anyway, and if her evening continued like this she wouldn't have any regrets left to complain of.
When the time to perform arrived, Sua was resolved entirely to do what was neccesary. Her love for Mizi had defined her life for years, and she refused to toss it out, even for her own sake. She sang with careful precision- even her slight mistakes were calculated moves designed to support Mizi. Mizi, for her part, shined on stage, every part the god Sua believed her to be. She lit up the stage with her beautiful voice, and smiled across at Sua as she sang. Her grin only grew as the scores were calculated, beaming at Sua who smiled in response as she watched the scores in her periphery tick over until they were equal. Sua was unable to believe that they had actually drawn- but they'd done it.
*beep*
Mizi's score moved again.
One last point was added to her tally.
The shot was fired. Sua's body fell lamely to the ground. Mizi dropped to her knees, now splattered with Sua's blood, and watched the pool of red around Sua grow. Her eyes, blown wide as she witnessed the shot, now filled with tears as she stared at the other girl's limp body. 'She said...' muttered Mizi, 'that we'd be together forever...'
