"You're lovely." The silence between them is palpable. They're only a few meters apart but God, it's like a chasm.
Helen can't deny there's a part of her that wants to close the gap. He's not exactly the sexiest man alive but he's got sweet eyes, and a sort of dopy smile like a friendly dog.
He's so earnest, the way he's looking at her, and something cold and mean and solid in her starts to melt. She's been called a million things by men; sexy, hot, gorgeous, beautiful, pretty. Never lovely. She was far from it. She was a raging bitch, and that was all there was to it.
If Jeff thought otherwise he was dumber than he looked.
Helen should have pulled a face and rolled her eyes and insulted him. She didn't. She could have.
"Only cus I talk dirty to you." She winked. She turned without waiting for his reaction.
