Work Text:
Yasmin Khan is not sick thank you very much. And she would like to keep it that way. Or at least, not let the Doctor know. She knows what the Doctor will be like.
It started a few days ago. Or Yaz thinks it was several days ago. It’s a bit difficult to establish when a ‘day’ is, when you’re travelling in a time machine and landing on planets that have different day timings to humans on Earth.
It started with a bit of a cough. No worries. Yaz had waved off the Doctor’s concern saying they had just come from a planet made entirely of dust and held together by ... whatever it was. Of course the dust was going to cause a cough, it should go away in a day or two now that they are away from the dust planet.
The Doctor had taken them to a planet with one of the freshest air Yaz ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Snowy mountains, huge swatches of blue grass stretching as far as the eye can see. And so were the flowers of multiple colours. So when Yaz had started sniffling, Yaz blamed it entirely on the flowers and the possibility of newly developed hay fever. The Doctor had tried to herd Yaz back onto the Tardis, but Yaz refused. She wanted to explore this new planet, and damn the hay fever.
So they did. Climbing to the peaks of the mountains, wandering the many cave systems, taking part in the birthday party for the Unaadi Queen.
Which is what she slightly regrets now, lying in bed with aching muscles and a splitting headache. The jungle noises that plays in her bedroom in the Tardis while she sleeps are too much for her right now.
“Tardis, can you turn the sounds off please?” Yaz croaks out in a quiet voice.
Immediately the sounds quieten down, and the silence feels so good against her pounding head.
“Thankyou.”
Hopefully she can try to avoid loud sounds today. Is it day already? How long has she been asleep?
There’s a loud knock on the door, aggravating her headache. Yaz winces at the pain lancing through her skull.
“Yaz?” comes a voice through the door. “Can I come in?”
The Doctor, who despite ‘owning’ the Tardis, has never once set foot in the room once it became Yaz’s bedroom. Something about privacy and ‘a space to call your own’. The Doctor doesn’t even come to the door unless it’s an emergency or there’s something so exciting that Yaz absolutely has to know right now and ‘no it can’t wait for you to brush your teeth Yaz you’re going to miss it’.
Yaz swallows, wincing again when her sore throat makes itself known. “Come in.”
The door swings open.
“Yaz! There’s this market on a planet nearby that I want to show you and it has got amazing trinkets to sell, but then the Tardis said you have a fever. Are you ok?” The Doctor said in one big breath.
Yaz peers over her duvet to find the Doctor still stood outside her bedroom, not setting a foot into the room without Yaz’s explicit permission.
“You can come in, you know,” Yaz said as clearly as she could with a sore throat and a cough threatening to break out.
The Doctor steps in and makes her way to the bed. “Are you ok? The Tardis told me to bring you this.”
From inside a pocket in her coat, the Doctor pulls out a cup of steaming tea. Yaz still can't wrap her brain around how that works. The Doctor places it on the bedside table, then frowns at Yaz.
“I don’t think humans are supposed to look like that.”
Yaz would roll her eyes if it wouldn’t hurt her head. “I’m ok. Just a little sick.”
The Doctor rushes to sit on the bed, placing her hands over Yaz’s face to feel the warmth. “It could be Carvellien Izz. No, wait, you don’t have horns on your head.”
The Doctor tilts Yaz’s face so she look Yaz in the eyes. “Have you grown horns while you’ve been asleep?”
Yaz shakes her head the best she can while still being held. “No. I don’t know what that is. It’s ok, its just a simple –”
The rest of her sentence is cut off by the Doctor.
“It could be the Pleff Torc but we’ve not been that way for some time now. Maybe its Lingen Blon? No, but that would mean purple spots.” The Doctor gaze sweeps Yaz’s body still in her pyjamas and wrapped in a duvet, as if she could see if Yaz had purple spot through the material.
Again, Yaz fights the urge to roll her eyes at the Doctor being slightly dramatic. “Doctor, I’m ok, it’s not that bad.”
The Doctor ignores her. “ I know someone who might know. Tardis, call Graham please.”
Yaz groans, but sits up so at least she can sip her tea while the Doctor stresses about nothing.
Graham’s sleepy face appears on the bedroom wall. “Doc? What’s going on?”
“Graham!” The Doctor says with relief. “Yaz is sick. What do humans do when they’re sick? What do I do? What’s the treatment? Do we have to quarantine? Get medicine from the monks of Kremadin?”
Graham huffs a laugh. “Breathe Doc. Yaz? What you got?”
Yaz is grateful for the sips of tea she’s had to soothe her throat. “Probably got the flu, not that the Doctor here listens to me. Started with a cough a few days ago, then a cold, then fever and headache today. It’ll most likely break in a day or two, then I’ll be completely fine in maybe a week or so. Two weeks at most.”
Graham nods. “Alright Doc. All you gotta do is make sure the fever doesn’t go too high, but don’t try to freeze Yaz either. Just cool cloths or cooling patches on her forehead ok? Keep her hydrated with drinks and soups. She’ll need to rest in bed, but she’ll be ok. If her fever gets above 40C, that’s when you call for a medical doctor. Other than that, she’ll be right as rain, won’t you Yaz?”
Yaz nods, while the Doctor looks worriedly between the two.
“Are you sure?” the Doctor asks. “No medicine?”
“Yes, you can go to a pharmacy and ask what meds they’ve got for the flu. The pharmacists there will be able to sort you out with everything,” admits Graham.
“Ok, thankyou Graham. Tardis, end call.”
Graham gives a cheery wave and Yaz salutes with her cup, before the screen goes blank.
Yaz leans over to place her now drunk cup of tea back on the bedside table then snuggles back under her duvet. “Think I’ll go back to sleep. Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?”
The Doctor nods. “Of course. Don’t you worry, I’ll make sure you’re back to feeling better in no time.”
It doesn’t take long before Yaz is falling back to sleep. But just before she drifts off, she hears the Doctor make another call.
“Hi Martha, any chance you can come by to check on someone? Yes right now, and yes it’s someone important to me.”
