Work Text:

Sleeping in was always nice especially hearing the cold soft sound of water tapping on the roof of the house, it filled the silence of the dark quiet room. But something felt off. "Was it thundering?" The Firebender thought to herself after feeling the small movement of a bed shaking her awake. Rangi was never a heavy sleeper, years of training would do that to you. But this wasn’t thunder. No…

Feeling her eyes fluttering open against her soft pale skin and dark black lashes pressing against each other, to looking at the side of the bed where warmth was moving, it was rigid movement almost as if feeling a small earthquake. As Rangi sat up she knew. It was Kyoshi, feeling the shivers beside her, the pale girl always knew Kyoshi too well. "It must have been about Kelsang again" The firebender thought to herself.

The sight of the Avatar shaking always made a painful ache sensation in the heart of the muscular woman.

The Avatar felt the subtle shift of the bed moving from Rangi sitting up, the taller girl immediately turned the other way towards the night stand to hide her face. Her back was now facing towards Rangi. "I’m sorry I didn’t mean to wake you." Hearing a soft breathless sob that the freckled girl tried but failed to hide in her voice.

Rangi wasn’t dumb. Immediately knew something was wrong.

"Kyoshi? Baby what’s wrong?" A soft warm hand was planted on the taller women’s shoulder. Feeling the crinkle of eyebrows lift in worry on the firebender’s worried face.

The silence after was deafening the only thing breaking the silence was the faintest sound of the rain tapping the window beside their bed and of course, the soft broken up sobs in between the taller girls hitched breathing.

A soft sigh came from Rangi’s lips. "Kyoshi, talk to me." Kyoshi heart ached at the warm spoken patience from her girlfriend waiting for an answer. The Avatar wasn’t ignoring Rangi. At least not on purpose, feeling the guilt of waking Rangi up with her own soft shaking body. Made her feel bad but the freckled girl couldn’t stop herself from the shaking.

Kyoshi knew once Rangi’s gaze was focused on her that the firebender wouldn’t back down now. Feeling the movement of Kyoshi turning back towards Rangi was a sorry sight.

The taller girl was still shaking as if she was shivering from being cold. Rangi’s chocolate brown eyes looked down at Kyoshi. The firebender could see the Avatar’s face. Puffy under greenery eyes and soft tears that still lingered beneath her lovers eyes. "how long has she been crying for?" Rangi thought to herself.

"Oh Kyoshi, come here." Hearing the words that came out of Rangi’s soft spoken voice made Kyoshi take a sharp rigid breath in the quiet room. Feeling the firebender’s soft warm hands pulling the taller woman into her lap. Rangi was still sitting up. Soothing her hands through Kyoshi’s soft tangled hair.

"You’re going to be okay." Rangi was now comforting her as if she was still the young starving girl on the streets, the type of comfort the freckled girl needed to lean on all those years ago. She had that comfort now.

All Kyoshi could do was let out a soft broken sob she couldn’t stop herself from holding it in anymore. She cried in pain of the memories her brain would never forget. The abandonment, Yun, and right now Kelsang. Of course it was.

The memories of his last moments would always linger in the mind of the Avatar for the rest of the two centuries Kyoshi had ahead of her. "Kelsang. Oh spirits Rangi I-I-" kyoshi was stuttering before she was cut off "I know honey I know. I’m here." Kyoshi nodded softly still having soft broken tears falling into Rangi’s thighs.

They were now damp from the tears.

Rangi knew it was always a painful subject for Kyoshi to talk about Kelsang, she wanted to save her from the more pain that it would bring. So Rangi stayed close to her lover planting soft kisses to the taller girls head soothing the girl shaking beneath her hands. The sight was jarring, it hurt seeing Kyoshi hurt so much. "If only I could take that pain away" Rangi thought to herself.

The only thing the firebender could do was comfort her sadden lover till the tears turned into soft sobs then to slow breathing. Kyoshi had fallen asleep in her arms. All Rangi could do was look down at her and tucked a piece of brown hair behind Kyoshi’s ear. A soft hand was cupping the Avatar’s face.

She planted a soft kiss on Kyoshi’s forehead. Being careful not to wake her lover up. Looking at her down with soft eyes Rangi would do anything for this girl no matter what faced her.

Rangi was starting to feel herself drifting back into slumber as well. She propped a pillow to her back to make herself comfortable then gently pressed her head against the headboard of their shared bed.

"I love you so much." was the last thing Rangi had whispered in the dark room before she fully let herself slip into sleep as well.
