Aligning with a High-Profile Rebel (2022)

Summary:

September 1, 2022, Blight Manor, Bonesborough, Boiling Isles

No context, no explanation, just a desperate plea from Amity to Luz sends her into action

Work Text:

The heavy lavender scent of Blight Manor usually feels suffocating, but today it is entirely eclipsed by the sharp, metallic tang of anxiety. Luz stares at her Tamagotchi-like crow communicator, her thumb hovering over the cold glass screen. The last message from Amity is a jagged line of text that reads: Grounded. Come to the manor. Please. Nothing else. No context, no explanation, just a desperate plea that sets Luz’s heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Outside, the Boiling Isles sky is a bruising shade of purple, typical for a late afternoon on the first of September, but everything feels heightened, frayed, and dangerous. Luz doesn't waste another second. She slips past the perimeter of the estate, keeping low to the ground to avoid the watchful, artificial eyes of the Abomaton guards patrolling the courtyard.

When she reaches the base of the towering, imposing stone wall leading up to Amity’s bedroom window, Luz pulls a plant glyph from her pocket. She presses her palm flat against the paper. The glyph glows with a warm, emerald light, and a thick, sturdy vine sprouts from the cracked cobblestones, winding its way upward like a green ladder. Luz climbs, her boots scraping quietly against the stone, her knuckles white as she grips the coarse foliage. Through the tinted glass of the bedroom window, Amity is pacing back and forth. Her newly dyed purple hair is slightly messy, and she is furiously tapping away at her own communicator device, her brow furrowed in deep frustration.

Scattered across her desk are several complex, hand-drawn potion diagrams and historical texts—renants of her advanced lessons with Lilith. Even with her mentor currently laying low, Lilith's strict, meticulous training is the only thing keeping Amity from completely spiraling, forcing her to channel her panic into precise, calculated actions.

"Come on, work," Amity mutters to herself, her voice trembling slightly. She shakes the small device, her fingers frantic as she tries to bypass the manor's localized signal jammer using a tracking spell Lilith had taught her. "I just need to know if she's okay. Just one message."

Luz gently nudges the window open, slipping into the room with the quiet grace of someone who has sneaked into magical castles before. But she pauses, letting her feet touch the plush carpet without making a sound. She wants to speak, but the raw vulnerability on Amity’s face stops her in her tracks. Amity drops her hands, her shoulders slumping as the communicator screen remains stubbornly dark. A heavy, ragged sob slips past her lips.

"Please be safe," Amity whispers to the empty room, her eyes welling with tears. "I can't—if anything happened to you because of me, because I couldn't get a message out... I don't know what I'd do."

"Well, the good news is, I'm entirely in one piece," Luz chimes in, her voice soft, laced with an immediate, grounding warmth.

Amity gasps, spinning around so fast her boots skid on the rug, nearly knocking over a stack of Lilith's old annotated spellbooks. Her golden eyes widen, tracking Luz’s form as if she is convinced she’s hallucinating. The tears finally spill over her lashes, tracing glittering paths down her pale cheeks.

"Luz?" Amity breathes, the word a fragile question.

In an instant, the distance between them evaporates. They run toward each other, colliding in a clumsy, fiercely tight embrace. Luz buries her face in the crook of Amity’s neck, inhaling the familiar, comforting scent of spell ingredients and clean linen, while Amity wraps her arms around Luz’s shoulders as if holding onto an anchor in a storm. They sway slightly, basking in the sheer, overwhelming relief of being together, safe from the chaos brewing outside.

Luz pulls back just enough to look into Amity’s tear-streaked face, giving her a reassuring, lopsided smile. "Hey. I promised I'd always find a way back to you, didn't I? And listen, once all this madness is over—once we stop Belos and everything is totally fine—I am taking you out on a real, proper date. No monsters, no covens, just us."

Amity’s breath hitches. The sincerity in Luz’s eyes, the warmth of her hands on her waist, and the sheer adrenaline of the moment culminate in a sudden, brilliant spark of courage. Caught entirely in the emotion of the promise, Amity leans forward and presses her lips to Luz’s. It's a sweet, lingering kiss, full of all the unsaid fears and desperate hopes of the last few weeks.

When Amity finally pulls back, her face is entirely crimson, her ears twitching with a mix of shock and residual adrenaline. Luz blinks, her brain short-circuiting entirely. Her eyes are wide, her hands hovering in the air. "Woah, crikey!" Luz blurts out, her voice cracking slightly.

Amity caps her hands over her mouth, her eyes practically dinner plates. "I can't believe I just did that!"

Luz immediately slaps a palm against her own cheek, her face burning a bright, radiant pink. "I can't believe I just said that! 'Crikey?' How did I even think that? Come on, Luz, be cool next time!" She groans, burying her face in her hands, though a massive, goofy grin stretches across her lips beneath her fingers.

Outside, crouching in the shadow of a large gargoyle on the balcony adjacent to the courtyard, Hunter narrows his eyes at the window. His crimson cloak is drawn tight, his brow furrowed with intense, tactical focus. He shifts his weight, preparing to move closer to the glass.

"I am going to check on Luz and Amity," Hunter announces in a hushed, overly serious whisper, adjusting his gloves. "They have been in there for a significant amount of time without assessing the tactical perimeter."

A hand smacks firmly onto his shoulder, pulling him back. Willow stands there, giving him a patient, knowing look, while Gus leans against the stone railing, rolling his eyes with a smirk.

"Leave them alone together for a bit, Hunter," Willow says softly, a small, amused smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

"Why?" Hunter questions, his tone entirely literal, his brow furrowed deeper. "If the Empress's forces advance, they are currently cornered in a bedroom with only one viable exit route."

"You'll understand when you're older," Gus chimes in, crossing his arms and shaking his head with the theatrical wisdom of a teenager who thinks he has it all figured out.

Hunter stiffens, crossing his arms over his chest, his expression switching to one of pure, indignant confusion. "I am older!"

Back inside the bedroom, the atmosphere is thick with a heavy, delightful awkwardness. Luz and Amity are sitting on the edge of the bed, a comfortable couple of inches apart, both of them a blushing mess. Every time their eyes meet, they immediately look away, smiling foolishly at the floor before stealing another glance. Finally, Amity clears her throat, the flush on her cheeks receding just enough for her determined, serious expression to return. She glances over at her desk, her posture straightening.

"Luz, we need to talk to my mother," Amity says, her voice tightening as she stands up. "Lilith always taught me to look at the facts of a magical contract, and Belos's plan doesn't add up. We have to tell her about the draining spell. She thinks the Day of Unity is some grand, glorious ascension. She doesn't know what Belos is actually planning. If anyone can make her see reason, maybe it's both of us."

Luz nods, her playful demeanor vanishing, replaced by a fierce, protective resolve. "Right. Together."

A few minutes later, they find Odalia Blight in the grand parlor, reviewing glowing Abomaton blueprints hovering in the air. Her posture is immaculate, her expression one of cold, calculating business. "Mother," Amity starts, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "We need you to listen to us. Luz has information about the Day of Unity."

Odalia doesn't even look up from her blueprints. She waves a dismissive, manicured hand through the glowing projections. "Amity, dear, I told you that you are grounded. And I certainly did not give permission for your little wild human pet to wander into my home."

Luz steps forward, squaring her shoulders. "Mrs. Blight, please! You have to listen to me. The Day of Unity isn't a blessing. Belos is using a draining spell. It’s going to destroy everyone with a coven brand. It’s going to kill your family, your employees, everyone on the Boiling Isles!"

Odalia finally turns, her sharp eyes narrowing as she looks down her nose at Luz. Her expression is a mask of sheer, patronizing contempt. "Enough. I have no interest in listening to the hysterical fabrications of a brat. You are a disruptive influence, and frankly, a nuisance to our family's pristine reputation."

The words sting, but before Luz can even flinch, Amity steps directly between Luz and her mother. Her fists are clenched at her sides, her golden eyes flashing with a fierce, protective fury that makes her look entirely formidable.

"Don't you dare call her a brat!" Amity shouts, her voice echoing off the high parlor ceilings. "You don't know anything about her! Luz is brave, she is kind, and she is trying to save everyone while you only care about your profits! You will respect her, because she isn't just some human—she is my girlfriend!"

The declaration hangs in the quiet air of the parlor. Odalia blinks, her cold, unbothered facade breaking for a fraction of a second. She lowers her datapad, her eyes drifting from Amity, to Luz, and then back to Amity. A slow, calculating expression washes over her face, her eyebrows raising in genuine surprise.

"Well," Odalia says, her voice returning to its smooth, measured purr as she rests a hand on her hip. "That is... unexpected. Though, I must ask, Amity... why of all people did you decide to get a girlfriend who is currently featured on so many wanted posters? Do you have any idea how much Oracle Coven publicity we could generate by aligning with a high-profile rebel?" She taps her chin, a sharp, corporate smile spreading across her face. "The branding opportunities alone are quite fascinating."

Luz and Amity exchange a bewildered, utterly exhausted look. Even when trying to stop the apocalypse, Odalia Blight remains entirely, unapologetically, herself.
