Work Text:

Megumi had never been one to express his feelings, so it wasn't surprising that he kept his little crush to himself. The only other person who knew was his sister, Tsumiki. Even then, he hadn't told her, she'd figured it out with help from  the disgustingly longing looks he would send y/n's way when she wasn't paying attention. He'd denied it at first, but eventually relented and admitted it. Tsumiki's first response was that she would help him out, which he begrudgingly accepted.

That was when Megumi found out how unbelievably oblivious y/n was. He'd seriously thought she was doing it on purpose at first, but then realized that's just how she was. Tsumiki tried to be subtle about it at first, but she noticed her hints and manufactured meetings between y/n and Megumi were not getting through to y/n, she tried to be more direct, but it was still no use.

After months of Tsumiki's help, he was still nowhere closer to confessing to y/n, so he told Tsumiki to just give up. As time went on, Megumi's crush never faded, but middle school was slowly coming to a close. Y/n would be going to a nearby high school, and Megumi would be going to jujutsu high.

It was hopeless, and no matter how many times Tsumiki told him to just confess, he couldn't. He couldn't work up the courage to ever say anything, so he went into jujutsu high with his crush close to his heart, never having confessed.

"Oh Megumi," Gojo held out his card to the grumpy looking boy. "can you go get me some kikufuku?"

Megumi snatched the card from his hand and walked off, taking any excuse to leave the idiot squad. He walked off to the shop and got in line, shoving his hands in his pockets as he waited.

"Megumi Fushiguro?" He heard from behind him.

Megumi's shoulders tensed before he slowly turned around, coming face to face with y/n, now older and- oh god, prettier. She had a surprised but delighted expression her face. She smiled wide and looked up at him, the breeze blowing softly through her hair. He swallowed thickly. He hadn't seen her since middle school, he thought he'd stomped out his silly little crush ages ago, but somehow, seeing y/n brought it back full force, if not worse.

"Y/n." He said, palms feeling a little sweaty in his pockets.

God, how did she get prettier? Her features were more prominent now, and she was wearing casual clothes. He'd only ever seen her in uniform before, so this was a new experience. The black skirt that flared out at her waist hugged her snugly, accentuating her curves, a soft, cropped pink knit sweater covering her upper half. She was a little bit taller, but not by much. Most of the height came from her chunky platform shoes.

"I knew it was you!" She laughed, the sound soft and bright. "I haven't seen you in forever." She adjusted the strap on her bag so it sat more comfortably on her shoulder.

"Yeah." Megumi willed his tense muscles to relax.

Y/n's eyes subtly scanned his figure, and she was surprised, because when did Megumi get so hot? He'd been cute in middle school, but now he was different, features sharper, he was taller and clearly hiding muscles under his clothes.

"You got tall." She observed.

"You didn't." He said immediately.

Y/n tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, still smiling. "Yeah, I know."

The tips of Megumi's ears tinged pink. God, he didn't know what to say, he'd always been terrible with words, but he wanted to talk to her.

"Hows school?" She asked, clasping her hands in front of herself.

He shifted on his feet. "It's fine. How's school for you?"

"Oh it's school." She shrugged, eyes lingering on his lips.

Megumi blinked once. Was she interested in him? No, she wasn't when they were younger, so why now?

Yuji wandered off to see what was taking Megumi so long, and almost screeched when he saw some girl talking with his friend. He turned quickly on his heel and sprinted back to the others. He skidded to a stop in fromt of Gojo and Nobara.

"It's way too hot out here for your nonsense, Itadori." Nobara said.

"Fushiguro's getting hit on!" Yuji exclaimed.

"Quick! Formation B!" Gojo yelled as Yuji started running off in the direction he assumed Megumi was, Nobara hot on his heels.

"Roger that." Yuji and Nobara said in unison.

Y/n watched with wide eyes as two people practically jumped on Megumi, hanging off of him as they spoke a mile a minute. Megumi looked unbelievably annoyed, but didn't push them off, so y/n surmised that they knew each other. She put her hand over her mouth to hide her smile, but her eyes were twinkling with amusement. What the hell was happening?

Megumi wished the world would open a hole under him and swallow him whole. These two idiots just had to show up.

"What's with you?" He ground out.

"Seriously you two? Could you please take your hands off him, you home-wreckers?" Y/n looked over with wide eyes as a tall man with white hair and small glasses started talking about violin practice and taking Megumi home.

Y/n looked back over at Megumi, watching as his face tinged with disbelief. He grabbed the pink haired guy by the collar of his shirt and dragged him off to the older guy, the girl hurrying to follow them.

"Okay seriously, what's up? You three are totally embarrassing me." Megumi's jaw ticked in annoyance.

"Oh come on! It's funny!" Yuji whined as Megumi dropped the collar of his shirt.

As the three of them spouted excuses, Megumi felt a tug on his sleeve. He snapped his head to the side, seeing y/n standing there with an amused smile.

"Can I steal you for a sec?" She asked.

The other three stared as Megumi completely dropped his angry expression and followed y/n away a few paces.

"Oh my god, he likes her, like, actually." Noabra said.

"Do they know each other?" Yuji asked as the other two exchanged phones.

They watched as y/n gave Megumi a soft smile and squeezed his wrist before turning and walking away. Megumi shoved his phone in his pocket and walked back over to them.

"Can we leave?" He asked, feigning annoyance.

He didn't really have it in him in that moment to be actually annoyed, given the fact that y/n had still asked for his number after that ridiculous display.

"But my kikufuku." Gojo pouted.

Megumi threw his card back at him, stuffing his hands back in his pockets before turning and walking away. "Get it yourself!" He called over his shoulder.

Back at the school, Megumi was sitting on his bed, staring down at his phone. Y/n had texted him, and they were having an actual conversation. He resigned himself to the fact that his crush was back, and that maybe it had never really left. His stupid heart was a traitor, he'd decided.

~

For a week, Megumi kept the texting to himself, until Nobara caught him one day by looking over his shoulder as he sat on the common room couch.

"Is that the girl from a week ago?" She asked, a mischievous grin plastered on her face.

Megumi turned his phone off and shoved it in his pocket with a quickness even he didn't know he possessed.

"No." He said immediately.

"It is!" Nobara rounded the couch and dropped down next to him, turning to face him. "You like her."

"No I don't." He replied.

"You do, I could totally tell last week." Nobara said casually. "Did you know her?"

Megumi groaned and let his head fall into his hands. He rubbed his face harshly for a second before looking back up at her.

"Don't fucking tell anyone." He warned, and Nobara laughed.

"Oh whatever, come on, spill." She said excitedly.

"I had," He let out a breath. "I had a crush on her in middle school." He grumbled.

"Oh my god!" Nobara slapped the back of the couch. "Did you ever tell her that?"

"No." Talking in that moment felt like swallowing glass.

"Loser." Nobara smirked at the glare he sent her. "Are you going to confess this time?"

Megumi mulled it over in his head. Did he want to? Yes, he did. Should he? Probably not. They were from different worlds. Y/n didn't know anything about curses or sorcerers, was it really a good idea to drag her into it all? It wasn't like he'd be able to keep it a secret from her if they ended up dating. That was if she even liked him back.

"I don't know." He slumped back against the couch.

Nobara eyed him for a moment. "Is it because of all this?" She gestured around vaguely, but she knew that Megumi understood.

"Yeah." He mumbled.

"You can't stay single forever just because you're a sorcerer." Nobara pointed out.

She had a point, not that Megumi would ever admit that out loud.

He didn't want to put y/n in danger, that was one of his bigger fears with confessing to y/n. The others were the usual- he didn't want to feel vulnerable with someone, he feared rejection, he didn't want to lose what they had going on. As much as he acted cold, most of it was because he didn't know how to handle his emotions.

Mumbling out a small 'thanks', Megumi stood up from the couch and walked back to his room.

~

Y/n had been enjoying the conversations she'd been having with Megumi. She had been trying to flirt with him, and so far, it seemed like he was reciprocating it. Y/n thinks 'seems' because she had never been very good at reading other people, as it was pointed out to her in her first year of high school, she was the most oblivious person on the planet.

It'd been two weeks since they'd exchanged numbers, and y/n had tried to hangout with him a few times, but he was always busy. Until today, when he finally agreed to hangout. They were going to get coffee and then walk around the mall. Y/n was excited. They hadn't said it was a date, but y/n wanted it to be. She liked him, a lot.

Y/n put on a cute outfit, did her hair, makeup, and she was off.

~

Megumi didn't really know how to handle the emotions he was feeling. He was a little shit in school, to people that definitely deserved it, but still, he'd had a reputation. All that to say, it wasn't like people were lining up to confess their feelings to him. He'd never had anything that was even in the realm of romantic, just his crush, and he'd pretty much kept that thing under lock and key. These feeling were so foreign to him, and they were kind of freaking him out. Was this what it was like to really like someone? He'd had a crush in middle school, sure, but it felt different now, stronger.

He'd had to take a few deep breaths when y/n asked to hangout a few times and he had to say no.

Now, he was waiting for y/n to show up. He'd gotten there a little early and had to wipe his sweaty palms on his jeans. He felt a little pathetic with how nervous he was, but there was nothing he could do about it. He was dubbing it the y/n effect.

"Megumi! Hi!" Y/n smiled as she walked up to him.

Megumi couldn't help the way his eyes raked over her. She was so pretty, how was she always so pretty?

God, he was becoming such a sap. He blamed y/n.

"Hi." He said, stuffing his hands in his pockets.

Y/n took in what he was wearing, traitorous heart jumping in her chest. He had on loose dark jeans, a grey t-shirt, and a baggy black sweater half zipped over his shirt. He looked good.

"So, coffee?" She asked.

"Yeah." Megumi turned and waited for y/n before walking to the coffee shop.

~

Megumi paid for y/n's coffee, even after she insisted that she could pay, but Megumi just quietly took out his card and paid. On the walk to the mall, y/n mostly talked, and Megumi listened. He usually found other peoples' rambling annoying, but not y/n's, he liked hearing her talk. High praise coming from him, if only he would say it out loud.

He still had trouble with his feelings, but he was trying, he wanted to try. For her.

Their hands occasionally brushed as they walked, and every time they did, Megumi's ears would tinge pink. Y/n didn't seem to notice, if her rambling was anything to go off of. Megumi opened the door for y/n, letting her step through first before following in behind her. He stuck close to her while they walked, following her into every shop she thought looked interesting.

"Do you think this is nice?" She asked, holding up a shirt.

He looked down and nodded slowly.

Y/n held it up to herself and looked in the mirror, not noticing the way Megumi was staring at her. At her core, she was still y/n, and that meant she was still oblivious to most things. Megumi shook his head a little, of course she still didn't notice.

The rest of their day was spent in a similar fashion, Megumi sending y/n disgustingly longing looks, and y/n not picking up any of them. However, she seemed perfectly fine to flirt with him, whether it was accidental or on purpose. Megumi was going to lose his damn mind, and by the time they were about to part ways, he had made up his mind.

He had to confess.

Now or never, he thought.

If he put it off any longer, he knew that he wouldn't end up doing it. Wiping his sweaty palms on his jeans, Megumi slowly stopped walking, but y/n didn't nktice yet. Megumi bit the inside of his cheek and blew a breath out of his nose.

"Y/n." Y/n's rambling ceased, and she stopped walking, turning to look at him with questioning eyes.

"Yes?" She asked.

"I like you." He blurted out, figuring if he didn't say it immediately he'd lose his nerve.

"I like you too." She said, a little confused, clearly not understanding.

Megumi groaned and scrubbed a hand down his face. "No, I like you. Romantically."

Y/n's eyes widened and her lips parted slightly in shock. "Oh."

He gave a jerky nod, feeling a lot of things he'd never felt before. He waited for the possible rejection, looking anywhere but her face.

"I like you too. Romantically." She said, cheeks turning red.

Megumi felt the tips his ears grow hot as y/n took a step closer, reaching out to clasp a hand in his. She tugged him forward and tilted her head up. Megumi swallowed harshly and slowly leaned down. Y/n closed the distance and pressed their lips together. The kiss didn't last very long, but it was enough for both of them to pull back with red faces.

Oh god, what now? He thought.

Y/n thought back to middle school, to the way Tsumiki had started hanging around her and how she and Megumi had started to run into each other more than was probably normal. Megumi watched as y/n's eyes suddenly widened and she clapped a hand over her mouth, staring up at him.

"Are you okay?" He asked, brows furrowing in confusion.

"Oh my god, did you like me in middle school?" She suddenly asked.

He huffed. "It took you this long to figure it out?" He looked away with something akin to a pout on his face, but if anyone pointed it, he would deny it until the end of time.

"Oh my god I'm such an idiot." She whined. "I can't believe this."

Megumi blew out a breath and looked down at her from the corner of his eye for a few seconds before facing her again. "Doesn't matter now."

Y/n glanced back up at him. "Guess not, but... god I'm just such a dummy."

Megumi squeezed her hand once. "It's fine."

Y/n chewed on her bottom lip. "Well, can I make it up to you?"

"How?" He tilted his head to the side slightly.

"By being your girlfriend now?" She said nervously.

Megumi bit the inside of his cheek, feeling a small, rare smile pull at the corners of his lips. "I'd like that."

"Good." She said shyly. "Me too."
