Work Text:
A month of this. Jefferson and Hamilton taking a walk together in the middle of the night, it wasn't too cold, it wasn't too hot, it was comfortable. They didn't say anything, only hearing the sound of their shoes tapping against the concrete sidewalks. The first time it happened they just happened to be walking the same route, the next day they went the same route again, and again and again. If you had asked them about it, they would say it was merely a coincidence. But between you and me? It was intentional. They never needed to communicate for the walks, they were either there, or they weren't. The other was never mad about it since they really didn't have anything to be mad about.
This one specific night however, the first day of the fourth week, was different. "Hamilton." Jefferson spoke, it made Hamilton shiver, he never sounded that calm when addressing Hamilton. "Why do we do this?" He stopped walking, looking over at Hamilton who didn't meet his gaze but had stopped with him. "If I'm being entirely honest? I'm.. Not sure." Hamilton said quietly, not wanting to disturb the night. "Why do you keep coming?" Jefferson asked. "I guess.. I just like walking with you. We're not yelling at each other, thinking of insults to spew, we're just walking, together, me and you." Hamilton admitted, following as Jefferson began to walk again. "Do you dislike it?" He was curious if Jefferson enjoyed their time together. "I don't know, I enjoy fighting you sometimes, it's funny how you react. Yet in the middle of the night the silence between us.. Makes me feel like I can be more like me." Jefferson smiled sadly. "I don't really get that chance anywhere else." Hamilton nodded, instead of trying to comfort Jefferson he just walked beside him, a little bit closer this time.
A few months of this. It was beginning to be more noticeable to Washington that the threats and insults that were hurled at one another lessened, they still fought a lot you could not deny that, but it wasn't as frequent. They weren't interrupting the comfort of the break room every chance they got, sometimes even sitting at the same table. People were confused but not opposed to the idea, they were tired of the constant bickering between the two. It was nice for both them and everyone else they were surrounded by.
Eventually, Hamilton found himself sitting on the couch in Jefferson's office while he was on a break. He wrote, occasionally looking over at Jefferson, curious as to what work was dumped on him, sometimes offering help that was met with gratitude. Jefferson was glad he had a second opinion on things now, of course he could've gone to Madison, his best friend, but that wouldn't be the best since Madison didn't offer his full criticism on Jefferson's work. When Hamilton criticized his work, he put thought into it, pointing out things that were incorrect or sounded wrong. Madison didn't mind that, in fact he encouraged it. "It's better to listen to someone who won't sugarcoat things." Madison stated, or at least that's what Jefferson remembered from their conversation.
"You alright?" A voice snapped him out of his memories, looking over to see Hamilton who noticed him zoning out. "Oh, yeah I'm fine. I was just thinking about something." Jefferson replied, slightly smiling at how Hamilton cared about the little things like zoning out. "I hope it's something about how fashionable I am." Hamilton joked as Jefferson laughed. "Your fashion comes from my tips, darling. Don't flatter yourself." Jefferson paused before adding "You have been looking more refined lately however, I'll give you that." They both smiled at each other before returning to what they were doing. After a little while longer Hamilton got up from where he was sitting "I do believe my break is ending, I best be heading back to my office to continue my work." Hamilton said before placing a paper star on Jefferson's desk, it was something he did every time he came to Jefferson's office, placing a little paper star on his desk before he left. "I shall see you soon, Hamilton. Don't forget about the cabinet meeting that is going to happen later." Hamilton nodded "Won't forget, especially knowing I get to see you more there." He smiled, a very faint blush painted Jefferson's cheeks as Hamilton closed the door behind him, the sound of his footsteps fading.
