Chapter Text
Akira and Yuutaro have been dating for six days and three hours. Dating life was no different from their friendship. Yuutaro has always been a touchy person, so it wasn’t a foreign experience to hold hands with him. Akira has never dated anyone before, much less a boy. He’s never held hands or kissed someone. Just the thought of Yuutaro’s lips on his made him blush. What they were doing now was fine in his books; holding hands in secret, sharing looks, brushing their knees together, walking home. Just to name a phew. The real problem was keeping it a secret.
The Aoba Johsai volleyball team was pretty known to be a gossip train, with Oikawa-senpai as their captain. If one move goes wrong, boom, everyone finds out. Akira had already had a conversation about this with Yuutaro, and things have been going smoothly so far. Akira didn’t need the team to know that they were dating so early in their romantic relationships. And to be truthful, he didn’t really know the other guys well enough.
“Kunimi-chan! Kindaichi-chan!” Oikawa chants from the other side of the gym as Akira and Yuutaro enter. “Good afternoon!” He says, patting them both on the back. “Love is in the air! Valentine’s day is almost here. Let’s all guess how many Valentine’s I’ll get this year, the winner gets a popsicle treat!”
“You’re so full of yourself, Kawa.” Iwaizumi says as he bonked Oikawa with a volleyball. “Kunimi and Kindaichi probably have zero interest in betting how many girls will thirst over you this year.” He exclaims. Akira held a giggle as he looked at Yuutaro in the corner of his eyes. “Oikawa-san, I don’t mind guessing!” Yuutaro says in a willing tone, putting a hand up. Akira let out a cackle and rolled his eyes.
“Kindaichi-chan, this is why you’re my favorite first year. No offense, Kunimi-chan.” Oikawa stuck his tongue out as he wrapped both arms around Yuutaro’s tall frame. Akira waved the two off as he shucked off his jacket. “So how many do you think? More than last year, right?” The captain asked as the two walked away from Akira.
Akira enjoyed admiring Yuutaro from afar. The glint in his eyes, the crinkles of his smile. It was all so perfect. Even his stupid turnip haircut was perfect. It was dumb, but that’s what made Yuutaro, well, Yuutaro. There was no one else like him in the world. Akira caught himself daydreaming about his boyfriend, so he quickly darted his eyes around the gym, praying no one saw him smiling to himself.
“Aki-Kunimi.” Yuutaro says, careful not to use their first names in public. The second people notice that they don’t refer to each other as their surnames anymore, they were completely deep-fried. “Let’s be partners for the first warm-up.”
“Okay,” Akira answered quietly, feeling his face heat up. It was just a regular sentence, how could he get so worked up on this? Agh, even Yuutaro’s voice was perfect. Every time he opened his mouth felt like hearing music for the first time.
Practice ended fine. As always. There was always goofing around, lots of scolding (especially towards Akira himself, since he’s lazy), and sweating. The first thing he wanted to do when he got home was to take a nice bath and then play some Pokemon. Then probably text Yuutaro. Then sleep.
Akira tucked his short hair behind his ears as he zipped his Aoba Johsai jacket all the way up, letting it cover half of his face. The warmth felt good, especially during cold winter nights like this. “See you tomorrow!” Oikawa waved as he turned his heel to walk with Iwaizumi. Akira and Yuutaro both waved as they started to walk their own route home.
“You did great at practice today,” Yuutaro says, slowly lacing their cold hands together.
“I did normal.” Akira responded, brushing their shoulders together. Yuutaro laughs, it was soft and airy, making Akira’s heart pound loudly. “You did good today.” Akira looked at his shoes quietly.
Yuutaro perked up and grinned. “So you aren’t immune to making compliments,”
“Shut up!” Akira hissed, bumping his shoulder harder into Yuutaro, who laughed louder in response. Then things went quiet again, and it was just the sounds of their breaths and the shuffle of their feet on the frozen road. “How many valentines did you guess for senpai?” Akira suddenly asked, feeling a bit curious.
“I guessed fifty-two.” Yuutaro explains, putting a finger up. “He’s popular with the ladies, but I feel like a lot of girls would push away from him in fear that he probably already has a girlfriend.”
“Or that he’s a player,” Akira snorts as they make their way to the part of the path where they part ways. Yuutaro lets go of his hand slowly, lifting his hands up for a high five. “See you tomorrow?”
“Mhm.” Akira nodded. But instead of giving Yuutaro the high five he wanted, he stood a bit on the tip of his toes to press a gentle kiss on Yuutaro’s cold cheek. “See ya.” He high-fived Yuutaro’s hand, which was still frozen in the air in shock.
Yuutaro’s face burst into flames as he grabbed onto Akira’s wrist. “W-Wait!” he quickly said, grabbing his face with his free hand. “What was that for?” He mumbled shyly, his face turning even more pink from the winter air. Akira felt his own face flush. “Um, I don’t know. We’re dating. I like you.”
“I-I know that but-” Yuutaro stammered like a little kid, not letting Akira leave. “But…you should’ve given me a heads up.”
Akira frowned and looked away, unable to look into Yuutaro’s face again. “Sorry,” He mumbled as he tried to shake his hand from Yuutaro’s grip, which just tightened. “No, it’s not a bad thing. I-” Yuutaro took a deep breath and pouted. “I kinda wanted to be the first who kissed you.” He said quietly.
Akira raised an eyebrow. “Uhhh, it’s not really a kiss though. It was just on the cheek.”
“I know! But still,” Yuutaro let go of Akira’s wrist and crossed his arms like a fat baby. “Can’t believe you beat me to it.”
Akira shuffled awkwardly, tugging at the lint inside his pockets. “You can just kiss me right now.” He couldn’t believe the words tumbling out of his mouth. He had just started dating Yuutaro six (well almost seven) days ago! How could they kiss so early in this relationship? It felt a little inappropriate, and it made Akira cringe. But to be fair, they’ve known each other since elementary school, and Akira can’t deny that he’s thought about planting a kiss on his best friend’s face in the past. So really, he didn’t regret what he said.
Yuutaro giggled nervously, scratching his lip. “Haha…aren’t first kisses supposed to be super romantic? We’re not at a very romantic spot right now.”
“You’re picky, did you know that?” Akira said flatly as he waved his hand. “Whatever, if you’re not gonna kiss me, I’ll probably beat you to it. Since it looks like I have more guts than you.” Akira said with a sly smile, knowing just how to push Yuutaro’s buttons. Yuutaro frowned deeply in response. “Okay, wait, come back!”
Akira found the flustered expression on Yuutaro’s face very pleasing to look at. He felt a little mischievous and proud that he was the one that made him like these. He shoved his hands in his pockets again and lifted his head. “I’m waiting, Yuutaro.” He says in a sing-song voice.
“Stop teasing me.” Yuutaro sighs, taking one of Akira’s hands in his pocket. “You’ve been a lot more open since we started dating.”
Akira could only blush in response as he watched Yuutaro interlock their hands. He put a hand on Akira’s freezing face. His heart was pounding loudly and he swore that Yuutaro could probably hear it. It was pounding so aggressively and violently that it could just leap out of his ribcage and punch Yuutaro in the face right now.
The two of their faces leaned closer to each other, and Akira could feel his eyes fluttering shut. When their lips finally crashed into each other (awkwardly and inexperiencedly, of course), Akira could see stars. He never cared for romance. And he knew he said that the thought of kissing Yuutaro felt a little uncomfortable. But he’d like to take it all back now, since this was probably the best moment and feeling in the world. He just couldn’t stop kissing him.
When they pulled away, Yuutaro smiled sheepishly. “Sorry. That was my first kiss. I don’t really know how this works.”
Akira rolled his eyes, staring at their still interlocked hands. “Please, as if I have any more experience than you.”
“You do! A lot of girls find you pretty!” Yuutaro shoots back. “Not a lot of people like me, everyone just calls me turnip-head.”
“You’re handsome to me, okay?” Akira huffed and crossed his arms. “Now enough with the sulking, it doesn’t suit you at all.” He patted his cheek gently. “Good night, Yuu.”
“See you tomorrow, Aki.” Yuutaro responded before turning around.
For the rest of the night, Akira couldn’t stop smiling to himself. He rolled around in bed and even kicked his feet like a little girl. It was stupid, romance was stupid, yet it felt oddly amazing. No way was he ever gonna let someone take that away from him. It was kind of cringy how Akira had grown attached to him and Yuutaro’s relationship quickly, but by seeing how Yuutaro responds, it was okay.
His phone buzzes on the night stand. He sits up and glances at the bright screen in his face.
Yuutaro Kindaichi:
Sweet dreams, Aki ♡
Akira Kunimi:
Good night, Yuu.
He hesitated for a split second before sending another message.
Akira Kunimi:
