Work Text:
That evening remained calm; the only sounds in the vast space were those of the medical equipment. It was extremely strange, but it was one of those moments I was grateful for because they were so rare.
Bloodwing stood against the wall, watching Mega Ambler in the distance as he quietly prepared everything, as always. The 13th Division was usually housed in cold barracks, and since Wild attacks had been on the rise lately, they’d been offered a separate room where they could rest—though they wouldn’t be returning to their homes.
Mega Ambler… was a rather curious bot, and in a way, he had his mysteries.
Bloodwing loved unraveling mysteries; studying (aside from administering anesthesia) was his forte.
He’d met him when they were selected to work in the 13th Division—they were both so young and inexperienced back then.
They had no idea what they were about to face.
Mega Ambler, who had been so young back then, had hardened over time to the point that some Star Guardians went to great lengths to avoid being treated by him—but they didn’t succeed for long.
Bloodwing didn’t consider himself much different from when he first started; aside from having witnessed horrific things, there were moments when he was grateful not to be out on the battlefields.
But that day was… so normal. No matter how hard he tried to rile Mega Ambler, the latter only responded with a gesture from his servo, completely silent. On a good day, he would have wrapped him in his bandages, not letting him go until he begged.
Bloodwing didn’t have the courage to tell him that he could free himself; he had grown to appreciate the glint of amusement in Mega Ambler’s optics so much.
But there were times when Mega Ambler was so overwhelmed by absolutely everything that he would fall into a state of complete silence.
Just like now
Mega Ambler approached Bloodwing and took one of his servos in his own. Without even looking at his face and with great care, Mega Ambler turned around, maneuvering so as not to let go of Bloodwing’s servo in the process, and left the medbay. He walked down the long, cold hallway of the building until he reached the end, where a staircase led up to the roof. The building wasn’t very large to begin with, so they reached it in just a few steps. They went up one floor, and in front of the stairs was the door leading to the roof. Mega Ambler simply forced the lock open.
The entire building was equipped with state-of-the-art technology—except for that specific door… Still, it was a bit suspicious, but there wasn’t much either of them could do about it.
When they opened the door, the roof came into view. It was a spacious area that was rarely visited and therefore deserted. They walked through, making sure to leave the door open (having learned from their past mistakes), and made their way to the center, where they sat down and began to take in the view before indulging in their favorite activity.
The pillars of Machinasium rose against the vast horizon; the familiar purple hue shone on the earth and the metal, now clearly visible without the smoke caused by the weapons used by either side in battle.
Some time ago, they had discovered that place during one of their rare moments of leisure and had agreed that if things were calm, they would gaze at the sky.
The sky had grown dark; soon the stars would begin to appear. Mega Ambler and Bloodwing moved closer until they stood shoulder to shoulder, their servos pressing against one another. Neither of them knew anything about the stars, but being there at that moment… was so indescribable.
Mega Ambler gazed up at the sky with a relaxed expression, gradually leaning against Bloodwing. He gently rubbed his helmet against Bloodwing’s—an affectionate gesture reserved only for the other medic.
To Bloodwing, there were no stars in the sky. He turned slightly to see Mega Ambler’s profile, returning the other’s gesture.
Why did those distant stars matter? when the biggest star in his universe was the one sitting right next to him.
That was his most cherished memory in his thinking circuits, but...
Don't worry. I'll buy you some time. See you later.
He decided not to look back.
Bloodwing? BLOODWING!!!
That scream echoed through the ruined place and in his mind...

.
.
His plans had failed, and unfortunately, that had caused Mega Ambler to nearly die because of him; regret and pain welled up within him. Now Mega Ambler was put on life support; the white metal card in front of him glowed faintly.
One of Bloodwing’s clawed servos trembled slightly before reaching out and taking the card. He was already out of danger, so he didn’t need to worry about that; the metal card pulsed faintly with energy. He held it between his servos and brought it close to his faceplate, closing his optics and pressing them to avoid shedding tears. His wings, which had been outstretched, folded in around him in a sort of embrace in the air covering the metal card.
“Such a foolish me…”
Mega Ambler, could you truly forgive me?
