Work Text:
(After the events of BFDIA 25, far enough into the future that Firey isn’t in the cage.)
Leafy, oh leafy…
It had been weeks, maybe even a month since anyone had seen leafy. It wasn’t like she was missing, she definitely wasn’t. She just… hadn’t left her room the whole time. How was she surviving with no food and drinks? Who knows.
Except, one person knew.
And that person was Firey.
“Leafy? You awake?” Firey gently knocked on her door, holding a tray with some water, toast and apples. He stood there idly for a moment, looking around before hearing a:
CREEAK!
“Ah!” Firey smiled. “Goodmorning, Leafy!”
Leafy stood in the doorframe, rubbing her eyes. She clearly looked like she just woken up, with an oversized t-shirt that looked almost three times too big and scruffed up hair, a clear contrast to her usual clean, organised twin plaits.
“G’morning, Firey…” Leafy mumbled, a tired groan.
Firey let himself in without asking her, placing down the tray on her bed and looking at her alarm clock.
“Does this thing not work?” He pointed to the clock, it was either broken or never used, covered in dust to the point you could barely see the time. “You always sleep late, it’s almost 1 PM!”
Which was true, ever since she started staying in her room, she picked up a habit of sleeping for ages, it was all she could do. She didn’t have the energy to leave, not after everyone made it clear they were out to get her. Firey had practically been her only company, feeding her and trying to entertain, but even then she still pushed him away.
“No, I just like sleep.” Leafy still stood in the doorframe, rubbing her temples and refusing to look at him. “You can leave now.”
Firey frowned at her trying to push him away again, he was worried about her, and had been since she locked herself away. She wasn’t leaving, she only ate what he gave her, and she was refusing any social interaction. He was scared that this was gonna go downhill.
Suddenly, he walked up to her, not touching her yet but standing close. Leafy raised her eyebrows, confused, not knowing what was going on.
“Leafy. You can’t just stay in here forever! I…I’m really worried about you, who knows what’ll happen if you don’t leave!” Firey protested, now grabbing onto her shoulder, freezing, turning slightly pink, and slowly taking his hand off. “Sorry… but still!”
“But what will happen if I leave, Firey?! What would happen if I showed my face again?!” Leafy scoffed, walking infront of him and collapsing onto her bed. Firey turned around to look at her, realising the core of the problem.
“Leafy… you could’ve told me about this, you know I would’ve helped you!” He uttered, moving the tray to the side and sitting down next to her.
“I-I’m just tired of being the villain…” Leafy whispered, by this point, tears were welling up in her eyes.
“I don’t think you’re the villain, I mean-sure, you did something bad, but everyone makes mistakes, what matters is you want to change.” Firey lifted his arm, hesitantly putting it around Leafy’s shoulder, pulling her close.
Leafy sniffled, wiping away the tear rolling down her face, sure, it should’ve been obvious that Firey didn’t view her negatively anymore, he was quite literally the only person checking on her. But it meant a lot that he actually voiced that opinion. She looked up at him and cracked a small smile.
“Thanks, Firey… I’m glad you don’t hate me after what I did.” Leafy replied. She tilted her head back down, and leaned on his shoulder, closing her eyes.
Firey instantly stiffened, looking down at leafy, shocked. He turned bright red, and his hair flames turned bright blue at the tip. (Which would’ve burned Leafy usually, but she was under the effect of a yoyleberry)
“U-uhm… I-… no problem!” Firey stammered, still in shock and extremely flustered.
Leafy slowly lifted her head off of Firey’s shoulder (bummer), moving to the centre of the bed and sitting on a pillow.
“I guess you’d wanna be alone again, I’ll be back in a while to give you some more-“ Firey tried to speak, but Leafy cut him off the moment she processed that he was gonna leave.
“No! Stay, please… I’m fine with company.” Leafy pleaded desperately (even though she didn’t want to come off that way), she really wanted him to stay, not because she wanted company from anyone, but because she wanted his company.
Firey was momentarily stunned, this was the first time she didn’t want him to leave instantly. It made him relieved, maybe she’d leave her room soon if she suddenly wanted him to stay.
He sat down on the bed, sitting next to her on the pillow.
“Sooo… would you wanna watch something?” Firey asked, turning his head to look at her, but also pulling her blanket closer.
“Sure!” Leafy smiled, searching the bed for her remote and turning on the TV.
Leafy settled on a random show she found, she didn’t really know good reccomendations so she just clicked the first thing she thought looked ‘okay’. She grabbed her blanket, putting the other half on herself.
(After about an hour of watching the TV, about 2PM.)
Despite the fact Leafy had only woken up an hour ago, she was getting tired again. She had actually stayed up the night before, falling asleep at around 10 AM, meaning she only had 2.5 hours of sleep.
She tried to stifle a yawn, but ended up failing. She wasn’t focused on anything anymore. Anything except Firey. She looked at him, seeing how he was focused on the show and… how close he was. It made her feel kind of flustered. She had never been this close to him like that. She was enjoying it.
After a while of fighting away her tiredness, she started to doze off. Her head fell onto the pillow and her eyes got heavier, she curled up against herself, her hair sprawling around her.
It took Firey a moment to realise that Leafy was laying down, it took him by surprise. To his knowledge, she only just woke up, he wasn’t aware about how she got very little sleep earlier. He blushed hard, she was asleep, vulnerable. She looked so soft and.. cute. He couldn’t help but smile.
He took a moment to think, he really wanted to do something… something risky (in his eyes). Was it a good idea? Definitely not. Did he really wanna lie down and hold her close? Yes. It was tearing him apart, what if she woke up and thought he was weird? What if she kicked him out and expressed that she never wanted to see him again? It was really bothering him now.
Mehh… fuck it.
Firey took a deep breath, and laid himself down slowly. For a moment he just stared at Leafy, admiring what he saw in her. It looked like all of her problems and worries just went away when she was asleep, he loved it, he loved her.
He hesitated but reached out a hand, putting it on her cheek. He was internally panicking, this was way too much for him! But he was too far gone now. And maybe, he wouldn’t regret it.
After processing, he did something.
He pushed himself up with his elbow.
Moved closer to leafy.
Leaned back down.
And…
Kissed her ever so gently on the forehead.
After he did, he immediately started panicking again, blushing like crazy and reeling back. Did he seriously just do that? Did he seriously just kiss her forehead while she was asleep? Jeez…
It took him a hot minute to recover from that, laying back down again. He should probably just sleep, forget about it and sleep.
So he did. Just not how you’d expect.
He rolled over, Facing leafy now. His arm crept up, eventually reaching her shoulder. He just kept it there for a moment, but then pulled her closer, and wrapped his other arm around her.
It took him a while, with all of the overthinking he was doing.. but eventually, Firey drifted off to sleep with her. The two now close together, cuddling (Leafy’s arm had instinctively wrapped around his waist) while the moon shone onto them from outside.
Fireys earlier worries completely gone. Until morning, atleast.
And nobody would see it,
But Leafy smiled while she was nuzzling into his chest, finally feeling warmth and comfort for the first time in a while.
