Work Text:
Every human knows that one day, they will die. The nature of life is such. If humanity were to not die, the very laws of existence would break.
Of course, laws of existence were laws, and as such, they had loopholes. Faith knew this intimately.
Faith also knew of her own death. A ticking clock, as she saw it. There was a year she would die, and she had to wait. One day, she would have to bring it to pass, although she did not know that yet.
Loopholes. A loophole was a tricky thing, something not quite there, something that lets you get way with something just shy of natural, just outside of rationality, just beyond humanity’s laws. A loophole was not inherently good or bad, it simply was. A loophole was nothing, without those searching for the holes.
Faith found the hole before she knew the law. The Watcher found her, and taught her to save herself, before she could conceptualise humanity’s bond with death. Faith knew she would cheat death, defy the very laws that shaped the mortal realm, and carve her own existence in her universe. Her own bloody, jagged, and raw crevice within which to exist. She knew, some part of her always did, that it would be her blood.
Somedays, Faith wished that the laws were just a touch tighter. That there were now loopholes. That could never be. Nothing was perfect.
