Work Text:

Friday, 3:57PM

Visions Academy was quiet on Fridays after school. Especially the dorms, as most students left right after class, or even earlier. Miles and Ganke were hanging out in their dorm, finishing homework and getting ready to go home.
“Any plans for the weekend?” Ganke asked, climbing the ladder to Miles’s bed.
“No, I’m not really doing anything. I might see some friends,” Miles lowered his voice, even though nobody else was around. “And keep the city safe,” He smiled.
“You know what?” Ganke turned to face him. “You should text that girl.”
“No. No, I’m not texting her. I’m not mad anymore, but still, we haven’t talked in months.” He shook his head.
“What, you guys are just never speaking again? There’s no way you don’t miss her, she definitely misses you." Ganke snatched Miles’s phone off the bed, scrolling through his contacts.
“Ganke!” Miles hissed, retrieving his phone.
“Just think about it. You have to talk to her at some point.”
Dammit, he’s right. “I guess it’d be nice to talk again.” He sighed.
     Ganke smirked.
“AS FRIENDS!” Miles smacked him with a pillow.
Miles slowly clicked on the contact reading ‘Gwen’ for the first time in months. He carefully opened the keyboard as if to make sure he wouldn’t accidentally send something. “What do I say?” He glanced at his friend for help.
“Don’t make it too complicated. Just ask how she is.”
“Shouldn’t I apologize for avoiding her for months?”
“From what you’ve told me, no.”
“Alright…” Miles’s thumbs began to move without permission. He didn’t mean to start typing, but it was now impossible to stop.

Miles: Hey, how have you been?

“Oh my God, I did it,” Miles tossed his phone across the bed and froze for a moment.
“Finally!” Ganke picked up the phone, which lit up with a notification. “Wait, she texted back!” He scrambled to type Miles’s password and open his messages.

Gwen: i’m good! i’m really happy to hear from you :)

“Okay,” His voice quickened. “Now what do I say?”
“Give me the phone, I got this.”

Miles: You free this weekend? We should hang out

Miles turned to look at Ganke, shocked.
“What the hell? I didn’t agree to this!” He playfully elbowed him and snatched the phone.
“I’m sorry, but…you kinda have to hang out now. You can’t just say no.” Ganke shrugged.
“Was this your plan all along, asshole?”
     “Well…”

Gwen: yeah i’m free, what do you wanna do?

“I DON’T KNOW! WHAT’D YOU DRAG ME INTO?!”
     “Go get food or something,”
“Ohhh that’s good,” Miles typed a message, but paused before sending it. “Can you send it for me?”

Miles: Wanna grab some food in my dimension tonight?

Gwen: that sounds fun! what time?

     “What time am I free?”
“How am I supposed to know?”
     “Hmm….7,”

Miles: 7pm?

Gwen: alright! i’ll be there

Miles: Nice, see you tonight.

Miles clapped his hands. “LET’S GO!”
“See? That was easy.” Ganke patted him on the back.

Friday, 4:02PM

Gwen woke up to her phone chiming, the notification lighting up her dark room. She groaned while picking it up.

Miles: Hey, how have you been?

Gwen, now fully awake, stared at the message in shock. “No fucking way,” She exclaimed, rubbing her eyes. She made sure it was the right number about 5—maybe even 6 times—before believing the message was real. “I thought you never wanted to see me again.” She muttered to herself, smiling. Okay, what do I say? ‘Not good, I can’t stop thinking about you’ Absolutely not.

Gwen: i’m good! i’m really happy to hear from you :)

Was that weird? I think it was, I should unsend it—Oh shit, he’s typing.

Miles: You free this weekend? We should hang out

Gwen nearly choked on a sip of water upon reading the message. “He wants to see me?” She paused for a moment, then smiled. YESYESYESYESYES I’LL CANCEL EVERYTHING

Gwen: yeah i’m free, what do you wanna do?

Miles: Wanna grab some food in my dimension tonight?

I’M ALLOWED BACK IN HIS DIMENSION?!!

Gwen: that sounds fun! what time?

Miles: 7pm?

Gwen: alright! i’ll be there

Miles: Nice, see you tonight.

Gwen was still silent, but internally SCREECHING. He just wants to reconnect, it’s nothing big. Whatever that was, it was a big step towards the two possibly becoming friends again.

Miles dialed his dad’s number after getting home. Both of his parents wouldn’t return for a few more hours, and Gwen would be there in an hour.
     “Hey dad,”
“Hey, Miles. Are you home yet?”
“Yeah, I’m home,” He paused. “Uh, I have plans with Gwen tonight.”
“Wait, you two are talking again?”
“It kinda happened on accident. I was with Ganke and he told me to text her, so I did. Then he took my phone and asked if she was free…so I played along because I didn’t want to disappoint her and she’s coming in an hour.”
Jefferson chuckled. “It’s always Ganke. Where are you guys going?”
“I think we’re gonna go to Karakas.”
“That place your friend’s dad owns?”
     “Yeah,”
“Alright. Well, be safe. And no spider stuff.”
     “Oookay,”
At 7:02 PM, Miles’ doorbell rang. He opened it to see Gwen, who was wearing a black zip-up and light pink shorts.
     “Hi,” She smiled.
“Hey, you ready?” He asked. She looks cute.
“Well, I’m at your door, so…” She replied playfully, and they both laughed. “Do you know where we’re going?”
“My friend’s dad owns this Greek restaurant, I was thinking we could go there? It’s only 10 minutes away.”
“Ooh, that sounds good! Let’s go,”
The two didn’t talk much during the walk, but the silence was comfortable. Miles would occasionally point things out, like the restaurant he went to with Peter B. and the store where he first encountered Spot, and they’d jump into a conversation.
A little later, they made it to the restaurant. The outside could benefit from a few repairs, but the inside was lively, welcoming, and smelled like grilled meat and spices. The two walked into the restaurant and Miles immediately recognized the cashier.
“Dimi! What’s up?” The two high-fived.
“Hey, Miles! You enjoying the weekend so far?” He turned to Gwen. “Hi, I’m Dimitri, one of Miles’s friends. What’s your name?” He held out a hand.
“Hi, I’m Gwen,” Gwen smiled, shaking his hand.
“It’s nice to meet you. What can I get you guys?”
“What do you want?” He asked Gwen.
“I’m fine with whatever you’re getting.”
“Great. We’ll take 2 gyro plates, and, uhh…” He turned to Gwen. “You want fries?”
     She nodded in response.
     “2 sides of fries,”
Dimitri nodded, typing their orders. “Aight. You better pay.” He joked.
“Nah,” Miles replied sarcastically, pulling out his debit card and hovering it over the card reader.
     “Thanks,” Gwen said.
The two found an empty booth next to the window and sat down. Miles placed their crumpled receipt on the table, which had the number 42 on the bottom.
“It’s nice to get a break from the spider stuff for once, huh?” Miles began.
“Yeah. That’s all we’d do whenever we saw each other." Gwen replied.
A few minutes later, Dimitri called out their order number.
Miles stood up. “Our food’s ready, I’ll be back.” He walked over to the counter. “Did you switch jobs? Why are you over here?”
“Dude, how do you even know this girl? I’ve never seen her before in my life. She looks way older than you.” Dimitri whispered. “I didn’t switch,  I just asked to give you your food.”
“Okay chill, I’ve known Gwen for almost 2 years. We became friends, like, a week before she moved, but now she’s back and I wanted to hang out. Don’t mess this up for me, alright?” Miles plucked a few napkins out of the dispenser.
“My bad, I didn’t know.” Dimitri threw his hands up.
“You’re good. I’ll tell you more later, but I need your help, I don’t wanna make this awkward.”
“Don’t worry bro, I’ll help you.”
What’s taking him so long? Gwen wondered, finally looking to see what he was doing at the counter. She saw Dimitri and Miles talking, but wasn’t able to pick up much of their conversation. Oh.
“Just don’t do any weird shit. Act like you, alright?” He handed Miles their food and went back to the register.
Miles placed the food on the table. He grabbed one of the gyros and examined it. “I think this one’s yours?” He pointed it towards Gwen.
“Pretty sure we ordered the same thing,” She joked.
     “Oh, right.” They both giggled.
They spent the whole dinner catching up and talking about school, friends, life, and other stuff, even bringing up how their spider-friends would love this restaurant.
After dinner, the two walked back to Miles’ apartment, a comfortable breeze following them down the street.
“Thanks for inviting me tonight, I enjoyed it.” She paused. “I missed spending time with you.”
“I missed it too. We should…do this more often?” Miles shrugged.
     “Yeah,” Gwen smiled. “We should.”

Notes:

it’s greek fest season so i’ve consumed astronomical amounts of gyro this summer and i couldn’t be happier
the restaurant is inspired by a couple of my favorite greek fast food places near me

go talk to an old friend?? maybe??
