Work Text:

Skeet hated his job.

His life was mundane. Boringly mundane. Thankfully he didn't have to interact with many people, as he would just stay in his cubicle for around 8 hours straight and then just go home. But still, it was incredibly boring.

He'd be invited to go to bars, and he went of course. But even then, he couldn't build up the courage to approach any gorgeous looking lady. He didn't have friends at his job, even. Just co-workers that would not even notice if skeet got replaced.

Skeet hated the fact that he planned to work this job until he was old enough to retire. He tried working in retail for a few months and that was absolute hell on earth. Then fast food which was somehow even more horrible, and then he finally secured an office job. A job for an introvert like him. But it seemed like it was much harder to make friends with a job like this.

.. Until a new girl arrived.

She was talked about almost immediately. Even when skeet was in the break room, he'd hear about her. Her name was.. Familiar. Very familiar. Her name was Mary. A name of a friend that he once had nearly 2 decades ago.

Skeet felt a little nervous. If this was who he thought it was.. No. No way. It's probably just a coincidence of some sort. But what if it was her? Would she even recognize him? What would he say to her? Would she even care about him at this point?

He had these thoughts in his mind for a while. Even when he was at the bar, drinking, he still had thought about her.

In order to try and drown these thoughts, he started to listen to music. Some music he had listened to when he was younger. He listened to a song he had once listened to every single day—even after losing all of his friends, he still listened to that one song, and somehow, that song saved him many, many times.

There's a light that never goes out, by The Smiths.

Surprisingly, Skeet never made his love for this song public. Even his playlist on YouTube that had most of the tunes he'd listen to—didn't include the song. Skeet's love for the song was entirely personal, he felt as if it was made just for him. So, he listened to the song, over and over again.

One day, he walked into his workplace, and entered the elevator. He'd done this several, if not dozens of times already. However, this time was different. As he was blasting that song through his headphones—Mary had entered the elevator.

Skeet did not immediately look away. His eyes followed her, but only for a little, as he did not want to seem like a creep. She.. Had a flower crown on her head. Skeet felt his heart skip a beat. This might actually be her

As soon as Skeet was about to open his mouth, Mary opened hers first.

“Is that The Smiths?”

Skeet was dumbfounded at first. How'd she know that..

“Your headphones,” Mary said, gesturing to her ears. “I can hear the song. Driving in your caa~aar, I never-ever want to go home, because I haven't got one—”

Anymore.” They both sang out.

Mary giggled a bit. Skeet didn't understand what was so funny. He really needed to talk to her—to say that he was sorry for all the things he said and did all those years ago and

The elevator dinged. Skeet stood there as mary prepared to head out.

“W-wait, uhm, your name is.. Shiners, right?”

Mary topped in her tracks, and had turned around almost immediately. Skeet saw her eyes twinkle a bit, before she smiled and gleefully said;

“.. You recognized me, skeety.”

Notes:

very loosely based off 500 days of summer. while I don't think skeet is like tom at all I think shiners is definitely like summer! also wanted to switch up some things
btw shiners canonically has called skeet "skeety" atleast once but stopped after he said he didn't wanna be called that
