Max Carter medically treats his favourite CO19 Inspector after a run in with a suspect.

Work Text:

Thursday Ninth September, Two Thousand & Ten

"Guv!" Max called down the corridor. "Let them look at you."
"Max, I'm fine!" Lily defended, as Max stormed over. A woman stood not far behind him, confusion written across her.
"No, you're not." Max responded, reaching Lily. He ran a hand down her cheek and winced when Lily winced.

"Right, come on."
"What?"
"You're gonna be a child with the FME so I'll look at it. In the office. Come on." Lily turned, and saw Ashley smirking at her.
"I hate you both." Lily groaned, as Max took her hand and pulled her along with him.

"Liar" Max mused as he headed towards the stairs.

In the CID office, Lily was sat on Max's desk as he delicately attended to her cheek wound. Lily hissed in pain as he kept at the worst part. The latex of Max's gloves felt odd against Lily's chin, as Max held her lower face to steady himself.

"Max, can– what are you doing?" Neil walked into the General office, from his own. There was a frown on his face as he saw Max with a first aid kit out.
"Inspector Adams' has been on the receiving end of a suspect, and refused the FME." Max answered, truthfully, peeling off a steristrap and placing it across Lily's wound.
"Why's she letting you do it then?" Terry muttered to himself.
"Because Max was one of the best Sergeants I've ever worked with. My trust in him is immeasurable." Lily was relatively calm now, as Max stepped back to admire his work.

"How's it looking?" Lily asked.
"Not too bad." Max nodded. "You're probably gonna owe them all a round, or some cakes."
"You think this is worth a cake fine?"
"Yeah." Max grimaced, knowing the team were a picky bunch.

"I didn't know cake fines were a real thing." Stevie sat down in her seat; nobody had noticed her sneaking, silently, in. "I thought they were a myth."
"Nah. Completely real. We've all nearly bankrupted each other." Lily chuckled.
"You've gotta be careful your team don't take the mick, though." Max added, solemnly, throwing his gloves in the bin. "I once got a cake fine for the way I turned a corner. walking!"
Lily snickered behind her hands; Max just shook his head at her; "He once forgot his gun holster, not to mention the gun!"
"Whats the worst you've got, Lily?" Mickey asked, amused.
"Rewording the official caution. In defence: I was hungover; and I still got the point across exactly even if the slightly wrong order."
"Don't tell me, Jake." Max raised an eyebrow at his wife.
"Elliott fucking McKenzie." Lily sighed.

"Wait, as in Macko?" Stevie asked.
"Yeah." Max nodded, chewing his lip. "Do you know him?"
"Kinda." Stevie answered.
"OH! You're the short blonde he keeps mentioning!" Lily pointed at Stevie, who was slowly becoming a strawberry.
"Oh this is perfect!" Max clapped.
"Shut up." Stevie buried her head in her hands. "I hate you so much."
"Sure, and I'm still in CO19."
"You're still part of our team, Max." Lily patted his shoulder, winking at Stevie's back.
"Thought you were gonna say I'm still part of your family." Max leaned on the table, watching Lily carefully.
"You're always part of my family. I suppose Ashley's too." Lily grinned, moving her hand to cover Max's.
"Good." Max smirked. "You can't get rid of me that easily." Max moved, closing the gap between them.
"Good." Lily adjusted, then leaned in to kiss Max's lips.

Usually, she wouldn't. Lily knew Max liked to keep his home life and work life private, but the moment was right. Max moved to remove the space between them, putting his hands on her waist. Mickey wolf whistled from across the office, and the couple could hear Stevie and Grace talking about how cute they were.

"Alright, that's enough." A voice said from behind Lily, coughing thereafter.
"Yeah, alright Sergeant Carter." Lily sighed, pulling away from Max.
"Christ, you two look almost identical." Neil looked between them, realising how little he knew about his own officer.

"You sound like my mum." Ashley and Max both groaned at once.
"STOP." Mickey started backing away, as if in fear.

Banksy chose that moment to walk in, looking around at his team, and their two guests.
"What's happening in here?" He asked nobody in particular.
"Who even knows." Grace sighed, passing him by and leaving the office. "I need coffee after this."
