Work Text:
Rui sat alone in the empty house.
"Happy birthday to me...happy birthday to me..."
Rui stared at the small cake he had baked for this. He had invited everyone in the school. And no one showed up.
The birthday decorations he handmade looked almost sad. The robot he made to shoot confetti remained useless on the floor.
"They really don't like me..." Rui muttered to himself. He took a deep breath, and blew out the candle.
"I wish for a friend."
Rui reached for a fork, taking a bite from the cake. He frowned. "This is disgusting."
He leaned back in his chair. Another birthday alone.
He was about to head to bed, when he heard a knock at the door.
Rui practically ran to open it. Outside was Tsukasa Tenma, who was carrying a bunch of bags.
"I'm sorry if I'm late!" Tsukasa went inside, inviting himself in. "I was coming here, but I realized I didn't bring a present! And showing up to a birthday party without presents would be extremely rude-" He looked around the empty house. "Is the party over already?"
Rui shook his head, shutting the door. "No one showed up."
"Well then, I'll bring enough party for the entire school!" Tsukasa sat his presents on the table. "And I brought enough stuff!"
Rui opened one of the bags, his mouth opening slightly from shock. "Is this...?"
"A book all about robotics! The science teacher told me you love to draw blueprints in class!"
A huge smile appeared on Rui's face. "I...thank you so much!"
"Not a problem!" Tsukasa sat down at the table, and looked at the cake. "Can I have a slice?"
Rui sat back down, this time next to Tsukasa. "I don't mind. It's not very good anyways."
"Nonsense!" Tsukasa took a bite of the cake. His smile somehow widened. "This tastes amazing!"
Rui's eyes widened. "You think so?"
"Of course! If you don't want it, I'll gladly take it!" Tsukasa ate the entire cake quite quickly. "Now I'm going to give you the best birthday ever!"
"It's getting late. We can't really go anywhere."
"Staying inside can be fun too!" Tsukasa grabbed a few of the bags, opening them to reveal a bunch of snacks and drinks. "We can have a movie night!"
"That sounds nice." Rui followed Tsukasa to the couch, and grabbed the remote. "What kind of things do you like?"
Tsukasa grabbed a bag of chips, opening it and placing it between them. "It's your birthday! You should pick!"
"Well..." Rui put on a mecha anime. "I really like this one. Not a movie, but it's really good.
"Then we'll spend all night watching it! My mom said I could sleep over here if you wanted me too!"
Rui smiled. "I would really like that. Thank you."
The two of them watched the anime for hours. Eventually, Tsukasa fell asleep, his head landing on Rui's shoulder.
A faint blush appeared on Rui's cheeks. Tsukasa was so adorable like this...
"Goodnight, Tsukasa. Thank you for the best birthday ever."
