Work Text:

Kali looked at its hands, stained red with blood. It could still see Beren’s corpse when it closed its eyes, a choice between lifeless eyes or scarlet skin. Beren hadn’t ever prepared it for a life without them. Kali wasn’t sure that it was possible for it to continue living in the world alone, to survive without Beren there, sturdy as an oak in the forest.

It placed its fingers onto its lips, the metallic scent of blood as familiar as the sound of Beren’s voice. It breathed out, and breathed in, pretending that the sound was Beren, not it.
