On the Grass

Summary:

Ash and Misty are struggling with Brock's odd relationship with James, as Brock openly flirts while cuddling with James

Work Text:

The afternoon sun over Jubilife City is a thick, syrupy gold, casting long shadows across the manicured lawns of the public square. It is September, and the air carries a crisp, early-autumn bite that contradicts the warmth of the light. Ash Ketchum sits on the edge of a concrete planter, aggressively pulling the brim of his red-and-white cap down until his eyes are practically shadowed. Beside him, Misty crosses her arms so tightly her knuckles are white, her gaze fixed entirely on a bench twenty feet away.

To say they are struggling is an understatement. Ash understands battles, type advantages, and the straightforward loyalty of a Pikachu. He does not understand whatever is happening on that bench. Misty understands water-types and the rigid, traditional temperaments of Cerulean City. She does not understand the fluid, unabashed reality currently unfolding in front of them.

Because on that bench, Brock and James are practically melting into one another.

Everyone in the region knows James is flamboyantly, unapologetically gay—he wears it like a badge of honor, his theatrical gestures and dramatic flair bleeding into every conversation. Brock, on the other hand, is a universe of his own: fiercely, intensely pansexual, falling deeply and hopelessly in love with the soul of nearly every person he encounters, regardless of gender. Together, they are a chaotic, hyper-affectionate storm that defies every unspoken boundary Ash and Misty have ever known.

Right now, Brock is leaning forward, his dark eyes locked onto a woman standing by the curb. Her name is Claudina, a local driver who operates one of the city’s high-end transport vehicles. Brock has been trying to "score" with her for three days, launching into his usual heartfelt, desperate declarations of love.

But the execution is entirely bizarre.

"Claudina, your eyes are like the sparkling waters of the Twinleaf lakes!" Brock calls out, his voice rich with romantic fervor.

Yet, as he says this, Brock’s left arm is securely wrapped around James’s waist, pulling the blue-haired man flush against his side. James is draped over Brock’s lap like a discarded silk scarf, sighing happily. Brock doesn't even look down as his right hand reaches up, his fingers playfully poking and prodding at James’s cheek. He pinches James's nose, then traces the line of his jaw in a casual, deeply intimate manner that contradicts the romantic poetry he is currently shouting at another woman.

"Oh, Brock, darling, you're squeezing my ribs," James purrs, though he makes absolutely no effort to move. In fact, he leans further into the touch, tilting his head back to expose his throat, nuzzling into the crook of Brock’s neck.

"Hush, Jimmy, I'm wooing," Brock murmurs affectionately, not pausing his intense stare toward Claudina. He plants a quick, loud kiss on the top of James's head, his fingers now playfully ruffling the lavender-blue strands of hair.

From the planter, Ash lets out a groaning noise that sounds like a dying Whismur. "I don't get it," he mutters, rubbing his temples. "Is he trying to get a date with her, or is he already on a date with *him*? My brain hurts."

"It's... open," Misty says, the word tasting strange on her tongue as she tries to rationalize it. "They're just... really open. To everything. And everyone. At the exact same time."

A little while later, the heat of the afternoon coaxes the boys down from the bench and onto the lush, green grass of the square. It becomes a proper lawn session. The bustling city hums around them—the beep of sleek, late-90s sedan horns, the chatter of trainers—but Brock and James have created a vacuum of absolute leisure. James is completely sprawled across Brock, acting for all the world like a lazy, pampered Persian cat. His long legs are tangled with Brock’s, his head resting squarely on Brock’s chest, tracking the rhythmic rise and fall of the Pewter City Gym Leader’s breathing. Brock’s calloused hands are threaded through James’s hair, gently massaging his scalp.

The atmosphere shifts, growing quiet and heavy with an unmistakable, magnetic tension. Brock stops talking. James tilts his green eyes upward, his theatrical demeanor dropping away to reveal something fiercely genuine, soft, and vulnerable. Brock leans down, the space between their lips shrinking to mere millimeters. It is an almost-kiss, a breathless suspension of time.

"Excuse me! Don't let me interrupt the romance!" The voice cracks through the air like a whip.

Brock and James blink, their eyes focusing on Claudina, who has walked over from her vehicle, a bright, amused smile on her face.

"I just wanted to say, Brock," Claudina says, leaning over with her hands on her knees, "you have absolutely wonderful taste. What a gorgeous choice for a pretty boyfriend."

Instead of flinching, scrambling apart, or turning red, James instantly preens. He arches his back slightly, a brilliant, dazzling grin breaking across his face. He places a hand against his own chest, practically vibrating with the compliment. "Oh, aren't you just the sweetest thing? 'Pretty' is my absolute favorite adjective, you know. Brock, did you hear that? She thinks I'm gorgeous. Though, really, who could argue?"

Brock chuckles, his chest rumbling beneath James’s head. He doesn't let go of James; instead, he shifts his grip to hold him securely against his chest. "She's not wrong, Jimmy. But Claudina, surely there's room in that heart of yours for a guy who appreciates a beautiful driver?"

Claudina laughs, a rich, melodic sound, and shakes her head. "I'm flattered, truly, Brock. But I'm afraid my heart is entirely occupied." She turns her head, gesturing toward the street. "Speaking of which... here she comes."

The roar of a high-powered motorcycle engine drowns out the city traffic. A sleek, midnight-black bike swerves elegantly to the curb right beside the lawn. The rider is dressed in dark leather, handling the massive machine with effortless grace. The cyclist cuts the engine, the sudden silence settling over the lawn. With a smooth, practiced motion, the rider reaches up and pulls off the heavy helmet, shaking out a massive, cascading waterfall of magenta hair.

Ash and Misty both choke on their own spit. "Jessie?!" Ash shrieks, tumbling backward off the planter entirely.

Jessie ignores the children, fixing her sharp blue eyes on Claudina. "Took you long enough, babe. I've been idling around the block twice."

Claudina walks over, beaming. "Sorry, honey. I was just admiring this lovely couple's dynamic." She turns back to Brock and James, waving a hand toward the motorcycle. "Everyone, this is my girlfriend, Jessie."

Instantly, two voices cut through the air in perfect, simultaneous synchronization.

"I don't prefer the term 'girlfriend'," Jessie snaps, her chin tilting upward with her characteristic pride.
"She doesn't prefer the term 'girlfriend'," James echoes casually from his spot on the grass, waving a dismissive hand as if it were the most obvious fact in the world.

Claudina blinks, momentarily caught off guard, while Brock looks between James and Jessie with an expression of profound, quiet curiosity. Jessie sighs, resting her helmet on the gas tank of the motorcycle.

"Look, it’s not that deep, but it’s just not accurate," she explains, her tone surprisingly grounded for someone usually so theatrical. She gestures vaguely to herself, her leather jacket, and her long hair. "Some days I feel like a girl, sure. Most days, I just feel like... me. A person. Jessie. The whole 'girlfriend' label feels like a coat that’s a size too small, or a dress with weird seams. I’m just a demigirl, if you need a word for it, but really, I’m just Jessie. 'Partner' works fine. 'Goddess' works better."

Claudina’s expression melts into one of deep tenderness. She steps closer to the bike, reaching up to gently cup Jessie’s face. "I'm so sorry, beautiful. I'm still learning the right words. Thank you for telling me."

Jessie’s sharp exterior softens instantly under the touch. She leans into Claudina’s hand, a rare, genuine smile gracing her lips. "You're forgiven. Just don't let it happen again in front of the twerps."

Claudina pulls her down slightly, planting a soft, apologetic kiss right on Jessie’s lips. From the grass, James watches the display with pure delight, his fingers interlacing with Brock’s. He looks up at Claudina, giving her an approving nod.

"Well, regardless of the vocabulary, I must compliment your taste, Claudina. You’ve managed to attract an incredibly handsome partner. Jessie really does clean up well when she’s not wearing that dreadful white uniform."

"Hey! Watch it, Jimmy!" Jessie barks, though there’s no real heat in it. A flush of pink high on her cheeks betrays her satisfaction at the compliment.

Claudina giggles, stepping up onto the footrest of the motorcycle and smoothly saddling onto the seat directly behind Jessie. She wraps her arms securely around Jessie's waist, burying her face into the space between Jessie's shoulder blades.

"She really is the handsomest," Claudina agrees, her voice muffled slightly by the leather jacket.

Jessie revs the engine, the powerful machine roaring back to life, vibrating against the pavement. She gives James and Brock a lingering, surprisingly soft look. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do, boys," she calls out over the noise of the motor.

With a twist of the throttle, the motorcycle peels away from the curb, weaving seamlessly into the Jubilife City traffic and disappearing down the boulevard. The sudden quiet that follows feels heavier than before. On the grass, James sighs, shifting his weight. He looks down at Brock, his green eyes dark and full of a sudden, intense warmth.

"Now, where were we before we were so rudely, yet progressively, interrupted?" James murmurs, a wicked, playful smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.

Brock doesn't answer with words. He simply reaches up, his large hand cupping the back of James’s neck, and pulls him down. This time, there is no hesitation. It isn't an almost-kiss; it is a full, deep, and deeply affectionate kiss right there on the bright green grass in the middle of the public square. James lets out a soft hum of approval, his fingers tangling into the fabric of Brock’s orange vest, pulling himself closer until there is absolutely no space left between them. They move together with a synchronized, effortless rhythm, completely indifferent to the rest of the world.

Behind them, the silence from the planter is deafening. Ash’s face has turned a shade of vibrant, alarming crimson that rivals a fresh Tamato Berry. His jaw is slightly slack, his eyes wide with a mixture of utter confusion, second-hand embarrassment, and the sheer sensory overload of trying to process his traveling companion kissing a member of Team Rocket on a Tuesday afternoon.

"Nope," Ash says, his voice cracking slightly into a high-pitched squeak. "Nope, nope, nope."

He turns on his heel so fast he nearly trips over his own sneakers. Without looking back, he begins walking away down the pavement, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his shoulders hunched up to his ears. Misty stands up slowly, watching Ash flee, before casting one last, utterly baffled look at the two boys still entirely wrapped up in each other on the lawn. She shakes her head, a helpless, exasperated smile tugging at her lips as she jogs to catch up with the young trainer.

On the grass, Brock and James finally break the kiss, breathing softly against each other's lips as they watch the kids retreat. James chuckles, resting his forehead against Brock's.

"Do you think we broke him?" James whispers.

Brock smiles, his thumb tracing James's cheekbone. "He'll figure it out eventually. Come here."
