Where Gods Don't Follow

Summary:

Percy Jackson has two lives.

In one, he is the son of a sea god — claimed, questing, carrying the weight of Olympus on shoulders that are still too young for it. In the other, he is Percy Wayne, nephew of Bruce, ward of a man who dresses as a bat and thinks he can protect everyone if he just works hard enough.

He is twelve years old. He is very tired. He has learned to keep secrets the way other kids learn to ride bikes: out of necessity, by falling, and because the alternative is worse.

Bruce Wayne has spent a lifetime protecting the people he loves by knowing everything. Percy Jackson is the first person he has ever loved that he cannot find.

Alfred Pennyworth says nothing. He makes eggs. He keeps watch. He has known what Percy is since the first night the boy sat at his kitchen table and ate like someone who had forgotten that food was allowed to be warm.

This is the story of a boy who belongs to a storm and a shadow, and the family that holds the space between.

Notes:

This fic begins four years before The Lightning Thief and runs parallel to canon. No prior knowledge of DC Comics required beyond Batman basics — everything you need is in the text. Knowledge of Percy Jackson canon is helpful but the story stands alone.

Chapter Text

Hello and welcome to the thing that has been living rent-free in my head for longer than I'd like to admit.

Quick setup: Sally Jackson is Bruce Wayne's sister in this AU. Percy is legally Percy Jackson-Wayne. Sally is alive throughout. Bruce gains full custody for legal/safety reasons but Sally remains Percy's emotional anchor. Tim Drake and Percy are the same age.

The Bat Family follows DC canon order. The Percy Jackson storyline follows book canon. They run parallel and they collide and that's the whole point.

This book covers ages 8–12 and the events of The Lightning Thief. It's slower than what follows. The next nine books are not slower.
