Work Text:
The harsh feeling of the cold air was what had finally snapped his attention back to reality. He was standing in front of his car, and by looking down at his watch, it had already been almost 20 minutes.
To say the last week was hell would be an understatement. He had meetings after meetings with the president and the director of the BSAA about a potential opportunity. An opportunity that to be frank, he was not interested one bit. It’s not that the offer was terrible by all means it wasn’t. The pay was almost triple his already grand salary, the benefits were amazing, and the housing that would be supplied was nothing but stunning.
The issue was, he just didn’t want to leave his home, his friends, and surprisingly enough, the BSAA. He had an amazing team, a boss that actually gave a shit about the organization, an assistant that would usually handle all the crappy paperwork that would have piled up until he had a minute.
The amount of ass kissing he got anytime he entered a meeting was exhausting. Sure, some of the individuals he met were genuinely interested in meeting the Alpha leader, but most were just trying to find a chance to climb the ladder or him for that matter. No matter the number of times he would say how he wasn’t interested in going out for lunch to get to know them more and how he was very happily married, wouldn’t shake them off.
Well anyways, here he was, standing once again in front of his car spaced out instead of going home. Taking in a deep breath he unlocked his car and got into it and sighed in relief when his tired body hit the seat.
The drive home wasn’t too interesting nor was it too long. Thankfully when they decided that it was time for them to find their forever home, they took the commute to the BSAA headquarters into consideration and found a beautiful 2 floor house with a wraparound porch and a private balcony connected to their bedroom on the second floor that the younger man fell in love with upon first viewing.
When he pulled into the driveway, the soft falling snow was starting to cover the freshly shoveled pathway to their door, signalling that the older man had cleared a path recently.
Not noticing the small smile that appeared on his own face, he turned the car off and took a step out. The house was dark, no light anywhere in sight, though that wasn’t unusual at this point in their marriage. It took a while for Chris to be persuaded to go sleep instead of waiting up for him to get home on these types of nights. A compromise was made that Chris wouldn’t wait up, but in return he would wake him up upon arrival so they could spend some time together until they would both drift off to sleep.
Pulling out his key and inserting it inside the hole as quietly as he could, he pushed the door open and stepped inside. At first thought, the house was dark, implying that the older man was indeed asleep at this hour. Though, as his eyes started to adjust to the lack of light, the soft glow of light was peaking behind the corridor as he could see a reflection through the hung mirror on the wall.
Confused, he pushed his boots into the corner and began his little trek towards the source. The more he walked, the soft aroma of candles could be smelt. As he turned the corner he was met with the sight of his husband, dressed in a nice suit and tie holding a bouquet of beautiful carnations with a single sunflower in the middle.
(See note for the meanings of the flowers)
The sight alone stole away the young man’s breath, his cheeks turning a light pink as his stomach started to flutter. Even after 10 years of marriage, he would never get over how his lover would make his heart stutter whenever he decided to do things like this.
“Love? What’s all this?” he asked, smiling as he took the final steps towards the older man, pressing a soft kiss to the man’s lips.
“I wanted to make your Friday better after all the mess this last week.” Chris replied, handing the flowers to the younger man, wrapping his arm around his waist and pulling him in closer.
“Just coming home to you makes everything better my love, though seeing you in this nice suit does really make me feel a whole lot better.” He chuckled, taking a moment to quickly nuzzle into his husband’s neck and pressing soft kisses onto the strong jaw.
“Hey come on now, you can’t have dessert before your dinner baby.” Chris laughed as he could hear the soft growl come from beside him. “Come on, I made your favourite!”
The two men reluctantly pulled apart and sat down at the table. Their nicely carved dining table had a very elegant red tablecloth that had been covered in small candles. Sat in the middle of the table, Chris set the flowers inside the vase and took his seat, eyes staying on the shorter figure.
“You made steak? How’d you know this was my favourite?”
“A little birdie told me one time, and I guess I couldn’t forget it.”
“Oh? Seems more like you been stalking me old man.” Piers giggled as he sliced the steak into a long strip and took a bite.
“Caught me red handed!” Chris laughed, watching his husband absolutely devour his late dinner. The soft handle light perfectly shined on his skin, the sight alone took the older man’s breath away, but that wasn’t a feeling he wasn’t used to after all these years.
Chuckling at his husband’s eagerness to demolish his dinner, he sat contently watching the younger man enjoy this small moment. Grabbing his glass of white wine, he brought it to his lips in a slow maneuver, grabbing the other man’s attention.
“Wait! Let’s toast!” Piers yelled, mouth full of potatoes as he reached over and grabbed his own glass. “To the most amazing man that has ever been born, to the man who manages to make me fall in love with him all over again every time I wake up in the mornings. To the man who can never shut the toilet bowl seat!” Piers cheered, a big toothy smile plastered on his face.
“THAT WAS ONE TIME!?!?!?!”
“You do it every morning love!”
“Exactly! One time… a day…” Chris added, the smile he had since his lover walked through the door still growing on his face. The two men shared a look before they both fell into a fit of laughter.
“You mean that though? Chris asked.
“What part?”
“The part that you fall in love with me all over again in the mornings?”
“No… it’s more like every time you look at me, or touch me, or breath near me really. As long as you’re alive, I find a new reason to fall in love with you every day.” Piers replied, reaching over the table to grab his husband’s hand in his.
“Piers...” Chris whispered, tears welling in his eyes. “I ugh, I love you so much you know? I um, sometimes don’t even know how to tell you.”
“I know my love, you’ve never been very good at communication when it comes to how you feel. Hell, you even telling me you love me still gets me!” Piers laughed, squeezing the hand once.
“But I know you love me. You don’t have to tell me in a big grand way, not when you tell me every single day about how much you love me.”
Chris looked up at him confused, his eyebrows knitting together.
“Baby you wake up an hour before me to make me breakfast and lunch for the office. You make sure my uniform is pressed and ready in the bathroom waiting for me to get dressed. You text me throughout the day telling me don’t forget to eat and drink something in between meetings. You wait for me to come home so we can spend time together, usually doing something I enjoy, like watching my favourite movie or tv shows. You’re always cooking up my favourite meals, always making sure all my snacks and drinks are stocked up. When I get home from a rough day, you’re immediately on me and rubbing my muscles. And that’s just on a normal basis! Do you want me to get into all the special little things you do for me that you don’t even notice either?” Piers whispers, he doesn’t even realize that he had gotten out of his seat and is now knelt in between the older man’s legs.
“I didn’t know I did all those things.” Chris replied, chocking back a small sob that escaped his lips.
“I know you don’t, that’s why I know you love me! You tell me every moment of our lives together that you love me in your own way! And that’s all I can ever ask for baby! I married you, all of you, all your flaws and perfections and all your insecurities, there’s no part of you that I don’t love.”
“I always knew you knew me better than myself.” The older man whispered. “I do love every part of you too Piers, all the soft and hard parts.”
“Oh, I know you like the hard parts really good babe” Piers giggled, wiggling his eyebrows.
“Tha-that’s not what I ugh meant!” Chris stuttered, his cheeks turning a bright pink, causing the younger man to laugh once more.
“I know, I just wanted you to smile again.”
The two men remained in the same positions for a bit longer before the oldest Redfield grabbed the other’s hand and dragged them to their bedroom. The dinner he cooked being left behind and forgotten until morning.
Both men couldn’t pinpoint when their love grew into what it was now. Maybe it was the BSAA lifestyle, maybe it was all the hardships they both dealt with. Or maybe it was just these moments that blossomed throughout the year and have cemented them into this love story.
They’ll never truly know, the only thing for sure? They knew damn well that as long as they had one another, they were going to be just okay.
