Glimpse Of Us

Summary:

Natsu, deep in his depression writes a song about a lost love. The song gains traction and now he’s looking for a lyricist.

Lucy decides she might be the one for the job.

BUT Lucy and Natsu already know each other, will they rekindle their friendship? Or will they end up hating each other. Will they ever be the same?

Notes:

So I may or may not have written this because I’ve been listening to nothing but Joji the past week and a half. I see him in concert in like 3 weeks!

I’ve always wanted to write something for some of his songs, as they would be angsty Natsu and Lucy songs. So I hope you enjoy the ride! I’m not sure exactly how long this one will be, but definitely a longer one!

Chapter 1: Won’t you come through?

Chapter Text

The amber sun bled through the windowpane, engulfing the room in soft hues of peach. The sun was setting, casting shadows from the outside trees on the floor of the bedroom. The room was still, the only thing that could be heard was the hum from the ceiling fan. Lucy laid in bed. Her chest slowly rose as she breathed in, then relaxed as she exhaled, the rhythm of her breathing was steady and quiet.

Lucy was then suddenly woken up to the loud obnoxious ringtone of her phone. Lucy was quick to sit up, realizing she had dozed off. She frantically looked around trying to find her phone. It was all bundled up in her blanket. She snatched her phone from the covers, bringing it into view. Levy’s name displayed across her screen. She brought the phone to her ear as she answered.

“Hel-“

“LUCY!”

Levy’s voice was too loud for how sleepy Lucy still felt. She quickly pulls the phone from her ear, slightly wincing. She waits a moment before bringing it back to her ear.

“Levy, I know you’re excited about something, but can you be a little quieter?” Lucy’s voice was still a little dry from sleep.

“Oh sorry! Were you just sleeping? Lucy the sun is going down, why are you sleeping now? Stay up too late again?”

Lucy yawns softly in response.

“Yeah, I stayed up way too late writing again, it’s not my fault inspiration comes after 1am.”

“You really need to work on your sleep schedule.”

“I know, I know! What was it you were calling me about anyway?”

“Oh yeah! So I was on YouTube today and I recommended this new music video right? So I click on it, you’ll never guess who was singing!”

Lucy took a moment to scroll through her memory or someone she knew who might be a singer, or liked to sing. She was drawing blanks.

“Umm…Who was it?”

“It was Natsu! He’s a singer now I guess. But the song was so… so… emotional. But I think the song is about you!”

“Wait what? Natsu? A singer? You think it’s about?!? What makes you say that?”

“Just watch the video! I sent it to you! You’ll see what I mean!”

Lucy sighs before she sweeps the blanket off of her. She stands up and takes a quick moment to stretch before she walks across the room to her desk. She takes a seat in her chair, as she grabs her laptop to bring it closer to her. She logs into her computer and starts looking through her messages with Levy. There it was. A blue link, which led to a YouTube channel.

“Ok, I’m pulling it up now.”

YouTube boots open. Lucy takes a moment to scan the screen. The song is titled Glimpse of Us. She stares at the thumbnail for a moment. It’s a blurred photo of someone’s hand on piano keys. She clicks the play button, taking a deep breath as it loads.

Lucy hasn’t seen Natsu since sophomore year of college, which was 4 years ago. A lot has happened since then, a lot has changed. Lucy wondered how he’d been, but she tried not to think about him too much, since the thought of their past hurt her. This was the first glimpse she’s had into his life since. The video took a second to load, what was nearly 10 seconds felt like an eternity.

The YouTube video starts, Natsu appears on the screen. He’s wearing a white tux, standing in an all white room. Nothing but the tan color of his skin, the black piano and his pink hair was contrasting against the white room. The camera slowly zooms out as a piano melody starts.

“She’d take the weight off my shoulders
If it was ever hard to move.

She’d turn the rain to a rainbow,
When I was living in the blue.

Why then, if she’s so perfect,
Do I still wish that it was you?”

She paused it immediately. Her heart was racing at the thought of Natsu writing this about her, about them. A million thoughts raced through her mind. She took a deep and shaky breath before she pressed play again.

“Perfect don’t mean that it’s working,
So what can I do?

Ooohhh”

The piano continues, the camera switching to a close up of Natsu’s hand on the piano as he continues playing.

“When you’re out of sight
In my mind.

‘Cause sometimes I look in her eyes, and that’s where I find a glimpse of us. “

Natsu is now standing in the middle of the empty white room, as he sings staring into the camera as it slowly pans out.

“And I try to fall for her touch, but
I'm thinking of the way it was. “

It starts to rain on Natsu. It started with a slow trickle and then gradually gets heavier as he continues singing. Eventually leaving him drenched.

“Said “I’m fine.” And said, “I’ve moved on.”

I’m only here passing time in her arms

Hoping I’ll find a glimpse of us.”

Lucy pauses the video. Slowly blinking as she processes what she just saw, and what she just heard. She could feel a threatful sting coming from her eyes. This was making her a lot more emotional than she thought.

“Did you hear it?” Levy says on the other end of the phone that Lucy forgot about. Breaking the silence, snapping Lucy back into reality.

“Y-yeah. “

“Girl that’s definitely about you.”

“There's no way it's about me. That could have been anybody.”

“Lucy, I’m telling you. This has to be about you. What are the odds this landed on my recommendations? I don’t even listen to this kind of music. Oh and look at the numbers on this! He has over 100,000 likes and views?! Is he famous?.”

Lucy shakes her head at the thought.

“I don’t know. Levy, can I call you back?”

“Oh course Lu! I’ll talk to you later, ok?”

Lucy hangs up the phone resting it on the desk as she continues to stare at the screen of her computer. The video paused on a close up of his face, he looked older now, tired. Slight bags under his eyes. His wet hair clung to his face, Lucy’s heart tugged at the thought that he was like this over her.

The music was so mature for him. He was the last thing from mature from the last time she saw him. A lot more has changed in the last 4 years than she thought. Lucy’s gaze descends down under the title, the comment section. Curiosity peeking her interest she couldn’t help but filter through the comments.

She reads through, people were commenting wondering who this girl who hurt him was, talking about how they loved the music video itself, and others asking for more music drops.

In his links he posted some of his socials. Lucy's curiosity, now getting the better of her, reaches for her phone. She quickly opens up Instagram.

She searches through her settings, looking for blocked accounts. She scrolls down a little bit before she finds his name. She hovered her thumb over the ‘unblock’ button for a moment, before deciding to press it. She then clicks on his name, opening up his instagram account.

Lucy started scrolling through his photos, carefully trying not to like any of them. A lot of the photos were of him and his friends, he even had some behind the scenes photos from his music video. One of the photos that caught her attention was a photo of him completely soaked from the fake rain, he was smiling giving a thumbs up to the camera as they were wrapping up the shoot.

That grin of his was enough to bring a small smile to Lucy’s face, knowing he still wore that wide grin of his. He was always the one with a big smile, the goofball. Trying to make everyone laugh around him. Even if most of the time he acted like an idiot.

Lucy tried to keep scrolling but the photo trail ended, the last posted photo on his Instagram was from the year after they stopped seeing each other. It was a photo of his piano, it looked brand new. He must have just gotten it. Lucy sighed as she scrolled back to the top of his instagram. She noticed he had just recently posted on his story. She debated for a moment, her thumb moving before she could properly think. She clicked on it.

Natsu had a few things posted, the first photo on his story was just a link to the video. But what really caught her attention was the next photo, he said something about wanting to work on a big project and he was looking for a lyricist for help. He linked an application form under the text. She clicks the link, only to sneak a peek at the application. It needed her first and last name, an example of writing, and a resume.

Lucy stared at the text, her mind moving a thousand miles a second. Was she really considering this right now? There's no way right? She couldn’t possibly. She ponders over it for a while, before deciding she can’t make any irrational decisions yet.

She closes Instagram and quickly dials Levy’s number. The phone rings.

Once.

Twice.

“Hey Lu! What’s up?”

“Umm… well.” Lucy said in a hesitant manner.

“Lu, what did you do?”

“I may or may not have gotten curious, unblocked him online and dug through his photos if that’s what you mean.”

“Lucy… what made you want to do that?”

“Uh… I’m not sure, but he posted something on his story. He seems to be looking for a lyricist for an upcoming project…”

“A lyricist? Are you thinking about it? About applying for it?”

“I don’t know… would it be weird if I worked with my ex boyfriend?”
