Work Text:
The star stickers on the ceiling above glowed a soothing green as you laid on the bed. Strange, you thought to yourself, that's not her typical style. Must've been a gift from Blook. Mew Mew sat to your right on a small stool in front of a vanity mirror, carefully applying her eyeliner. The room was dim, but you could still see it faintly in the mirror, sharp, precise. She was dressed in a tank top and shorts, for now. She would no doubt choose something much more snazzy when it came time to leave. Her hair, normally tied into pigtails, fell loose on her shoulders and back. It had grown since the last time you'd seen it like this, and quickly at that. It was a marvel all around. That body, which had started out a plastic doll, you could swear the more time passed the more parts of her became.... real. Her hair didn't feel rigid anymore, it was soft and wavy. Her skin, which had been hard and smelled like a fresh vinyl figurine, had softened too, as had her face and hands. She was clearly resonating with this body more and more, and by god, were you captivated. Her gaze must've caught you staring, because after a quick glance, she set down her brush, and she turned to you and grinned. "Well, how do I look~?"
You sat up to get a better look, to take it all in. She'd done a burlesque design, with dashing red lipstick that popped on the white foundation, a rich green eyeshadow, with splotches of flushed pink on her cheeks. She always did know how to pull together a good look, and quickly at that.
"Drop dead gorgeous."
"Oh, you don't mean it, mew."
"Of course I do. Really, you've outdone yourself."
She didn't seem to know how to take it. She never was good with real praise, which you thought was cute. She glanced around a bit, before trying to change the subject.
"Well, do you want to put anything on before we go? You'd look quite cute with some eyeliner."
"Oh, I'm not, uh, good with any of that. I'd mess it up."
"How about some nail polish then, It's pretty hard to fumble."
"No, it's fine really... I've got wobbly hands, really."
With that, her eyes narrowed. The grin on her face grew to a wicked smile. "Well, then. Guess you're going to have to leave it to the PROFESSIONAL, mew."
She snatched your hand quick, like a cat would a mouse, before slowly and gently placing it in her palm spread out. She plucked a bottle of nail polish from the surface of the vanity, the first one she saw, a bright purple, and she got straight to work.
You opened your mouth to protest, but before you could say a word, she carried right on. "Hey. Hey. HEY! Sit still, you'll make it uneven." Gently, she guided the brush over each nail, one by one. It felt a bit odd, the brush leaving a layer of the polish behind with each stroke. Clearly she had done this many times before. With each stroke, she covered the surface of the nail, never once touching the surrounding skin. Your first nail paint was perhaps the cleanest you'd ever see. She set your hand down, and held out her hand expectantly. This time, you slowly raised your left hand, and placed it on hers. She giggled a bit at this. "Come on, stop being so SLOW. You know I don't bite. Anymore." You managed to push through your apprehension to fire back.
"I'm less worried about the biting, and more worried you'll stab me. That's kind of your thing, isn't it."
"Oh, PLEASE. I ran out of knives a LONG time ago."
You both laughed at this, and just for a moment, she lost her stability. One slip of the wrist, and you had a thin streak of purple on your thumb. "curses. curses. CURSES!" She said, with a familiar frustration bubbling up through her voice.
"Hey, don't worry Mads, I like it. It's cool. Like a scar."
"Whatever. Whatever. WHATEVER! Ahem, we'll fix it in a minute, mew. Let me finish up, now."
She took the brush to your middle finger, then your ring finger, and finally your pinky, before putting the lid back on the bottle and setting your left hand down. You lifted your hands to look at them, turning them every which way to see them at different angles. It was pretty. Her work was pretty. You were pretty. You tried to choke back tears, but they came anyway.
"Woah, woah, WOAH, Are you alright? Is it bad?"
"No, Mads. I love it."
With that, you wrapped your arms around her and buried your face in her shoulder. She seemed a bit taken aback by this at first, but after a good minute, she rest her arm on your back and leaned into it.
You felt at home there, with her.
New life, cool life.
