Work Text:
it'd been a few days since Kris stopped working with dess- a few months after Kris and Susie began dating. when they did, it was because they were ordered to hurt ralsei in some way for Dess's plans. they refused, ran off, and that was the day they instantly decided to speak up about all of their plans. Ralsei understood, despite his panicked demeanor, and Susie was absolutely pissed but held back from just killing them.
either way, dess got her fucked up excuse for a cat to find Kris while they were alone, psychologically torture them for funsies, and dragged them back to the bunker, essentially so they'd have to relive what they saw dess go through. or whatever dess used to be.
later on, Susie had already thought over things but two days later after looking for Kris with ralsei she went to the light world and dragged Kris back out from the bunker.
she mumbles to herself, not sure what to think of it. the human was coughing up something black and thick like the weird cheese goo that tasted entirely like salt and you could use for cheese dip which i forgot the name of. well, other than that, they definitely looked different, almost a fraction of what dess became after getting trapped in the bunker for a year or so. wait, were those... wings? whatever, she doesnt have time to pay much attention to their appearance.
maybe that's how she became that way, and Kris is on the same path.
either way, she gently scooped them into her arms. they tried to choke out words but couldn't, really.
"ah, fuck." she grumbled. "let's just get your dumbass back to castle town."
she usually made fun of them for being so short, but for once she was actually kind of grateful for their small size since the were easy as hell to carry while she sprinted back to the closet that contained castle down.
she jumped down, holding Kris tight, and... okay, yeah, those are wings and feathers. like a Titan's. odd.
...she just runs to the castle.
"RALSEIKRISWASINTHEBUNKERIFOUNDTHEMCOMEHELP" she yells, mashing several words into one like the fucked up potato substance she made involving too much cheese and alarming amounts of butter and salt. it was good at 2 AM that one time, though.
"bwhuh-?" ralsei yelps, running down to see Susie and... Kris. "oh- oh! oh my angel, is that-!"
... after a little bit of panicking over a barely conscious Kris and smothering them with healing spells, they managed to be awake enough to choke out a "thank you." the group decided they'd take a shower since it'd been two days, and after they'd eat something and then explain what the fuck happened and why they now have wings, feathers, and oddly enough a long tail with a bit of fluff at the end which Susie finds cute even if she'll never say it.
"...so." ralsei began, "howd you find them...?"
water ran loudly in the background, muffled by walls.
"um, I just... dragged em out of the bunker. and they were coughing up this weird black goopy stuff." susie responds. bewildered silence. she continues. "it's weird seeing them so weak, I guess? wait, no, I mean. they're not WEAK, just. needing help for once? which is weird? because they're usually strong as fuck and super quiet and whatever but. they're usually super independent and shit."
"yeah. it's... certainly odd." ralsei's voice is painfully soft, as his mindset is that if he's quiet enough then maybe she won't notice he's on the verge of breaking down and violently sobbing.
"... irrelevant kinda but I had a honey bun in my pocket I was savin for later but would it be, like, okay for Kris to have for now? when they get out of the artificial rain thing?"
"...what's that?"
"like, this weird cinnamon roll without the cinnamon."
"oh, probably. not much nutrition but they'd gone through enough for now and probably deserve whatever a honey bun is right now. you should probably bring them to that diner in the light world you mentioned."
Susie only nods
the water inevitably stops, and a couple minutes later they weakly wander back into the room. theyre in shorts and an oversized T-shirt (which they probably had stolen from Susie) rather than their usual armor. and their new wings are soaking.
Susie just silently passes them the honey bun, and Kris turns to look at the new weight on their back.
"...how do I dry these?"
susie plainly adds, "I dunno, I aint a bird, Kris."
"I'm not a bird, suz- I... I guess I'll let em' air dry...?"
she just smirks. "jus' eat the damn honey bun, idiot."
*...Yeah, yeah... thanks, too"
ralsei interjects while there's a small bit of silence, "would you like to... talk about what happened?"
more silence from Kris and their eyes slightly widen, as if remembering again that they'd just gone through basically hell. a slow nod, though their eyes are glued on the wall, nothing in particular.
"right, um." they start, their voice slightly shaky, "i think. after telling you what she was planning, uh... wait, for context... when dess went missing, there was this... cat. with several legs and pink n yellow eyes. it made her go missing n dragged her into the bunker. it nearly killed me too but I ran away, but apparently being nearly passed out and bleeding wasn't enough proof that it existed. this was when I was, like, 7 or 8?
they think for a moment.
and... how long was I gone?"
"two days?" ralsei answered.
"...oh. felt like a week or two, hah. but, uh, yeah, it dragged me to the bunker like it did to dess for two days and i just remember something like falling asleep and just. only seeing straight up nightmares for that time. I guess. they were weirdly specific. but then Susie got me out, n' now m' here."
"so you... technically haven't slept or eaten anything in two days?" ralsei inquires.
"oh. /oh./ ...yeah."
"...Susie." he continues.
"hm?"
"how about you bring Kris to the light world and get them something that's /not/ a honeybun?"
after a bit of thinking, she nods and suddenly picks Kris up again.
"wh- I can walk!"
"you want down?"
"...No."
they both wander back to the light world, and she sets them down when they start on the sidewalk, much to kris's small, so very very slight annoyance. the cool night air hits Susie's scales and she shivers slightly which drags a shiver out of Susie. Kris just stays close by her side like that'll warm her up at all.
Susie would've gone to the diner though it's closed so she decides on just going to kris's house. toriel got a new job and she'll be elsewhere for a week. halfway there, Kris feels a small ache in the back of their mind, but they ignore it. at least, until it gets a little heavier.
"Susie?" they mumble.
what's up?" she adds, confused.
"i think im... getting a headache or something. came out of nowhere. think s' because of the bunker or-?"
"you haven't eaten or slept in two days."
"...true. I'll get some medicine when we get to my house."
they just keep walking, and Kris perseveres, but so does that damn headache, it even just... gets worse. ignoring it hasn't been doing any good.
"hmffuck.."
"you good? is it getting worse?"
"...yeah."
Kris walks a little faster and Susie does as well. Right as they get there, though, the human halfway collapses at the door and chokes and coughs out more of that... inky dark stuff. It's much thinner this time, like pen ink, and it runs down their chin as they tremble.
susie exclaims, "oh, shit-!" she moves to their side, not exactly sure what to do when someone is coughing up what seems to be concentrated, pure darkness.
they weakly come back to their feet.
"still some of that crap in you, huh...?"
they manage a small humming sound, which was probably intended to be words, not a small noise.
"mmf, fuck, that's... gross..."
they wipe their chin but the almost metallic taste lingers on their tongue. susie follows Kris into their house and watches them makes a beeline to the fridge, grabbing a leftover piece of homemade cheesecake and stuffing it into their mouth.
Susie mumbles to herself, "jeez..." before grabbing a cup from their cabinet and filling it with some tap water, "here. you haven't had water in a while, either."
"...thanks. fuck, I needed this- the headache is mostly gone, too. I wonder if it was 'cause of... whatever I just threw up."
"mostly?"
"I'll live. still gonna get some medicine, though... um, there's a red container thing in the cabinet in the bathroom, in the top left thing under the sink. could you get that?" they ask. susie nods, walking right to the bathroom to fulfil her sidequest.
she kneels down and shoves her claw into the cabinet, pulling out a small bottle of the description Kris noted. it's taken back to the kitchen, where Kris is. the pie is gone and crumbs are smudged across their face, and they kept a bit of water in their cup for the pill they were about to take. looks like they'd been looking at their wings as well while she was gone.
"...thank you," they say once again as Susie hands them the bottle.
"no problem. lookin at your wings?" susie adds.
"mhm, they're weird and heavy. but surprisingly soft and fluffy?"
Susie thinks for a moment, but continues,"... can I touch em?" Kris nods, although blushing slightly, and Susie rakes her claws across the feathers. "oh. yeah, damn-" they t
