Work Text:
Luke lets his mind drift away as he cleans the vaporator. It's mindless work, really, especially after all of the years that it has been one of his chores. They need cleaning regularly. If it isn't the build up from grease, there's always the sand that inevitably works its way into every nook and cranny until the vaporator works at a decreased capacity or stops working at all. It's just something they have to keep on top of, which is why it's part of Luke's regular chores and also why he's so incredibly tired of doing it. At least when the vaporators decide to stop working for other reasons, figuring out what's wrong with them is a change of pace even if it's also nerve wracking.
But for now, this vaporator has only the normal issues, not even true problems yet. Luke mentally runs through the route in Beggar's Canyon, imagining all of the curves and obstacles and the feeling of his T-16 Skyhopper humming around him. But he can only imagine threading the needle so many times before it loses its shine and his thoughts turn to more distant places. Luke Skywalker had never been the best student, and his education hadn't been anything to shake a stick at either, but the descriptions of other planets had always stuck with him. Naboo's lush greenery and blue waters, the mountains of Alderaan, the vast cities of Corellia or Imperial Center... Luke's imagination fills in the gaps between the few holos and limited information he had seen. He imagines himself there, in some bright future where he'd gotten off of this dustball of a planet. He can't wait to get out of here.
Maybe one day he'd see Chandrila! Or maybe Ossus—
Luke frowns and stops scrubbing, thrown out of his fantasies by the unfamiliar name. He could have sworn he'd never heard of a planet named Ossus, so why...
And then something hits him with all the force of an enraged Krayt dragon, and Luke passes out in the sands.
He awakes much later, in his own bed, his skin aching in a way that he knew meant he'd probably spent hours outdoors under the suns before Uncle Owen or Aunt Beru had realized something was wrong and had come to find him. From the feel of his face, his hat had probably been knocked off when he'd passed out too. But as aware as he is of his sunburns, Luke also feels... something else, something he couldn't explain. He feels like he'd burnt more than his skin, that he had some extra sense that he hadn't known about before now, just in time for him to be painfully aware of its presence. Whatever it is.
"The Force," an echoing voice answers the question he hadn't asked. "It is found in all things, but it is strong in your family." He—the voice certainly sounds like a man, like Luke's own voice—pauses for a moment and then speaks again, a wry twist to his tone. "In our family."
Well, Luke thinks against the rising panic that he was either hallucinating from suns exposure or he is no longer alone in his body, I guess I can't say nothing interesting happens on Tatooine, anymore.
