Work Text:
The humid, heavy air of southern Louisiana clings to the concrete walls of Belle Reve Penitentiary like a damp shroud. Inside the high-security complex, the atmospheric collars hum with a low, constant vibration, a sterile reminder of the power dynamics at play. Conner Kent—currently wearing the heavy, tattooed skin of Tommy Terror—sits on the edge of a bolted-down steel cot.
His reflection in the polished metal mirror of the cell is entirely foreign. The buzzed hair, the faux-biker sneer, the heavy-handed bravado of a generic teenage thug. But beneath the bio-synthetic makeup and the psychic illusion Miss Martian is maintaining, Conner’s chest feels tight for an entirely different reason. The world looks at him and sees the spitting image of Superman. They assume he is the sole heir to a legacy of bright skies and infallible justice. What the world doesn’t know is the half of his DNA that burns with cold, calculating ambition. They don't know the civilian name of the Man of Steel, and they certainly don't know that Lex Luthor is Conner's other father. It is a secret he carries like lead in his veins, especially now, surrounded by the very criminals his biological donors put away.
To make matters more complicated, the silence in his own head is deafening. Until recently, M'gann’s mind was a constant, comforting presence. They dated—briefly, awkwardly—trying to force a puzzle piece into a slot where it didn't belong. But over the last few weeks, Conner has found his thoughts drifting, his orientation a tangled knot he is still trying to untangle. Being under cover as a heterosexual criminal duo feels like wearing clothes three sizes too small.
The heavy steel door of the cell groans open, interrupting his thoughts. A guard shoves a lanky, pale teenager inside. "Move it, frostbite," the guard grunts, slamming the door shut with a definitive, mechanical thud.
Cameron Mahkent, better known to the Team’s archives as Icicle Jr., stumbles forward, shaking a mop of messy white-blonde hair out of his eyes. He looks seventeen, maybe a year older than Conner’s physical age, with a lean, wiry build and an easy, defensive smirk that doesn't quite reach his eyes. He rubs his wrists where the power-dampening cuffs just came off, letting out a low whistle as he sizes up Conner.
"Well, damn. Guess I’m roommate of the month," Cameron says, his voice carrying a distinct, youthful drawl. "You must be the new muscle everyone’s whispering about. Tommy, right?"
Conner forces his voice down into Tommy Terror's gravelly register. "Yeah. Tommy."
"Cool. Literally," Cameron says, tossing his meager prison-issued property bag onto the top bunk. He leans against the bolted desk, crossing his arms. He doesn't look at Conner with the fear most inmates reserve for a meta-human powerhouse; instead, there is a curious, almost appreciative glint in his eyes. "Don't sweat the small stuff in here, big guy. You stick with me, and you'll do just fine."
Across the facility, in the female wing, M'gann finds herself in a radically different environment. Her cellmate is Crystal Frost, the volatile Killer Frost, whose cold eyes track M'gann's every move with feline malice. Separated by thick structural concrete and different security sectors, Conner is entirely on his own, anchored only by the strange, shifting energy of the ice-villain across from him.
— — —
The next morning brings the sharp, simulated chime of the prison’s recreational hour. The heavy reinforced doors slide back simultaneously across both wings, funneling the inmates into a massive, split exercise gym. A towering, double-paned sheet of reinforced, transparent smart-glass bisects the room, separating the male and female populations while keeping them perfectly visible to one another.
"Check it out," Cameron says, nudging Conner’s shoulder with his elbow as they walk out into the gray, concrete-floored space. His touch is brief, but there is an easy, unforced familiarity to it that makes Conner's chest tighten in a completely new way. "This is where the magic happens. Or, you know, where we rot. But mostly, it’s about who you know."
Cameron gestures grandly toward a row of iron benches near the back wall. Sitting there, looking like an unholy royalty of crime, are the heavy hitters of the cold-tech world. Leonard Snart relaxes with an effortless, blue-collar arrogance, while Victor Fries sits stiffly beside him, looking miserable even in a climate-controlled room. In the center sits Icicle Senior, his posture rigid, demanding obedience without speaking a word.
"My old man," Cameron says, his tone dropping from arrogant to anxious in a fraction of a second. He tries to cover it with a sharp laugh. "The top-tier. The big cheese. He’s basically running this joint, even if the guards think they are."
Conner observes the tight set of Cameron’s jaw. The boy is practically vibrating with a desperate need to impress the older man. "Must be tough," Conner mutters, genuinely empathetic despite himself. "Living in a shadow like that."
"You have no idea, man," Cameron sighs, running a hand through his white hair. "He’s always on my case. 'Junior, do this. Junior, don't freeze that.' It’s like nothing I do is ever enough for him. He wants a soldier, not a kid."
Conner looks toward the older villains, then back to the boy next to him. "I get it. More than you think. Try having two dads who are constantly trying to ruin each other's lives, let alone yours. You never know whose expectations you're supposed to be meeting."
Cameron blinks, turning his full attention back to Conner. A soft, genuine smile breaks through his tough-guy facade. "Two dads, huh? Damn, Tommy. Sounds complicated. But hey, at least you’re not trying to impress a guy who literally measures your worth in degrees Fahrenheit."
Before Conner can answer, a commotion draws their eyes across the gym. Edward Nygma—The Riddler—is scuttling toward Icicle Senior’s bench, wringing his hands and offering a sycophantic grin. He opens his mouth, likely to offer a riddle or a piece of unsolicited strategy, but he is immediately cut off. Two massive walls of meat step into his path. Mammoth and Blockbuster loom over the slender intellect, their shadows completely swallowing him. Nygma pales, his shoulders slumping as he takes a hasty step backward, clearing his throat nervously.
"Get lost, puzzle-brain," Brick barks from a nearby weight bench, his stony, reddish skin catching the harsh fluorescent lights. He lets out a booming, cruel laugh that echoes off the concrete. "You’re the biggest joke in Belle Reve, Nygma. Go count the tiles or something."
The surrounding inmates laugh, and Nygma scurries away, thoroughly humiliated. Cameron watches the display with a tight stomach, his own confidence visibly wavering as he looks back toward his father.
"Alright," Cameron mutters, squaring his shoulders. "I gotta go talk to him. Show him I’m keeping the family name respectable."
He takes three steps toward the benches before a shadow cuts across the floor. Professor Ojo steps out from behind a concrete pillar, his singular, massive cybernetic visor glowing with an ominous yellow light. Ojo has an old grudge against the Mahkent family, and Junior is an easy target.
"Mahkent!" Ojo spits, his voice laced with venom. "Your old man isn't around to shield you right now."
Before Cameron can fully react or raise his hands to defend himself, Ojo lunges forward, a heavy, improvised shiv gleaming in his grip. Conner doesn't think. The instinct to protect kicks in instantly. Moving with a fraction of his true speed to maintain the illusion of Tommy Terror's meta-strength, he steps into the space between them. He catches Ojo’s wrist, twisting it sharply until the weapon clatters to the floor, and delivers a brutal, heavy right hook across Ojo’s jaw. The professor hits the concrete hard, sliding a few feet.
The gym goes dead silent. The low murmur of a hundred criminals cuts off instantly. Across the glass partition, Conner catches M'gann's wide, alarmed eyes. She presses a hand against the glass, her telepathic presence brushing against his mind like a warning bell. Conner, be careful! The inmates begin to encircle them, sensing a bloodbath. Warden Wilcox watches from the elevated guard balcony, a sadistic, amused grin on his face. He deliberately keeps his hand away from the alarm button, eager to see the meta-teens tear each other apart.
Brick steps forward, his massive, rocky hands clamping onto Conner’s shoulders from behind, pinning his arms. "You got a lot of nerve, new meat," Brick rumbles.
Ojo pushes himself up from the floor, shaking his head. He looks up at Conner, his cybernetic eye zooming in, scanning the facial structure beneath the Tommy Terror makeup. The bio-metrics don't lie. The unique skeletal structure, the DNA markers—Ojo's visor recognizes him instantly.
"Wait..." Ojo gasps, a cruel, mocking realization dawning on his face. "That’s not a Terror. Look at him! The eyes, the posture... it's the boy! It's Su—"
Conner’s heart drops into his stomach. If Ojo blows his cover, the entire mission is dead, and M'gann and he will be trapped in a sea of enemies without backup. Using every ounce of his leverage, Conner drives his heel down onto Brick’s foot, shattering the rocky skin. As Brick roars in pain and loosens his grip, Conner grabs Brick’s massive arm and hurls his entire body weight forward, slamming the massive criminal directly into Ojo. The two villains crash into the floor in a heap of limbs and curses.
Ojo scrambles up, desperate, pointing a trembling finger. "Listen to me! He’s the clo—"
Suddenly, Ojo’s voice hitches. His massive cybernetic eye blinks rapidly, the yellow light flickering. Across the room, M'gann's eyes glow a fierce, brilliant green. Her mind slams into Ojo's thoughts like a tidal wave, systematically targeting his short-term memory and tearing the realization away from his consciousness. Ojo’s hands drop to his sides. He blinks, looking around the room with total vacancy.
"What... what was I saying?" Ojo mutters, entirely disoriented.
"That's enough!"
The booming voice belongs to Icicle Senior. The older villain stands up from the bench, his icy blue eyes fixed entirely on Conner. He walks past the groaning forms of Brick and Ojo, his gaze appraising. He stops just a few feet away, looking Conner up and down.
"Courage," Senior says, his voice a low, chilling rumble. "Actual backbone. That’s something I don't see enough of these days." He casts a sharp, derogatory look over his shoulder at Cameron, who is standing frozen, looking small and thoroughly chastised. "Certainly not from my own flesh and blood."
Cameron flinches, his eyes dropping to the floor. The rejection is palpable, a heavy physical blow to the boy’s pride.
"You," Senior says, pointing an icy finger at Cameron. "Get over here. We need to talk about your lack of situational awareness." He looks back at Conner, his expression hardening. "As for you, Terror... stay right there. Don't move."
Senior pulls Cameron into a tight circle with Captain Cold, Mister Freeze, and the other elite inmates near the glass partition. On the opposite side of the glass, Killer Frost steps up, leaning in close to hear the hushed conversation. Conner stands exactly where he was told, but his super-hearing is already focusing. He filters out the ambient noise of the gym, the hum of the dampening collars, and the heavy breathing of the inmates around him. He tunes into the low whispers vibrating against the glass.
"...the structural integrity of the western wall is the weakest point," Senior is whispering, his eyes darting toward the guard towers. "Once the tech is smuggled into the laundry facility, we short out the main grid. Every collar drops at exactly midnight."
"And the guards?" Captain Cold asks, his voice low.
"Collateral damage," Freeze states coldly. "We move fast, we move heavy. A total, massive prison breakout. No one stays behind."
Conner absorbs every detail, his mind racing. They have a timeline now. Midnight.
An hour later, the guards herd the inmates back to their respective cell blocks. As they enter their block, a guard tosses a pair of fresh, clean orange prison uniforms onto the bench outside their cell.
"Change into these. Inspection in twenty," the guard barks.
Cameron snatches the uniforms, pulling Conner into the cell and sliding the door shut. The anxious energy from the gym is still radiating off the younger boy, but it has shifted into something frantic, almost protective.
"Look, Tommy—or whatever your name is," Cameron says quickly, tossing a uniform at Conner’s chest. "You need to put this on right now. And listen to me very carefully."
Conner catches the fabric, eyebrow raised. "What's the rush?"
Cameron steps in close, his voice dropping to an urgent, intense whisper. He looks genuinely worried, his hands trembling slightly as he adjusts his own collar. "My dad... he noticed you. That means everyone is going to be watching you. If you go by 'Tommy Terror' in here, you’re a walking target for every guy trying to make a name for himself by taking out the new heavy hitter. You need a civilian name. Something normal. Something that doesn't scream 'meta-human thug'."
Conner looks down at the orange fabric in his hands. He thinks about his life, about the secrets he keeps, about the absolute absurdity of hiding his true identity by revealing a truth no one would ever believe anyway. It is a Cassandra Truth—the perfect lie because it is completely factual.
"What about Conner?" he says, his real voice bleeding through the rough exterior just a little bit. "Like Con Air?"
Cameron stops. He looks at Conner, his eyes tracing the sharp line of Conner’s jaw, the subtle intensity in his gaze that doesn't match the brutish makeup. A slow, smirk returns to Cameron's face, the tension evaporating as a completely different kind of heat takes its place. He steps just a fraction closer, his eyes bright with a sudden, playful spark.
"I like the way you think, babe," Cameron says softly, his voice dropping into a smooth, teasing drawl. He reaches out, his fingers lightly brushing against the sleeve of Conner's new uniform. "You can call me Cam. 'Cause I definitely got my eye on you."
The sterile glare of the fluorescent lights in the therapy office hums with a relentless, maddening frequency. Sitting in a bolted-down steel chair, Conner Kent clamps his hands over his knees, trying to keep his posture slouched and brutish. The temporary tattoos of Tommy Terror stretch across his engineered biceps, but inside, his chest feels like a hollowed-out chamber of lead. Across from him sits Dr. Hugo Strange. The man’s circular, opaque glasses catch the light, obscuring his eyes completely and turning his face into a terrifying mask of clinical detachment. To Conner’s left, M'gann—perfectly maintaining her psychic camouflage as Tuppence Terror—twirls a lock of her dark, synthetic hair around a finger, playing the part of the vapid, codependent twin.
"The logs from your previous containment cycle suggest a repetitive cycle of explosive violence," Strange says, his voice a smooth, oily purr as he taps a stylized pen against a digital clipboard. "Anti-social personality markers, a complete disregard for authority, an almost instinctual desire to smash the framework around you. Tell me, Tommy... do you hate the walls, or do you simply hate the womb that brought you into them?"
Conner glers at the floor, his jaw tight. He lets out a low, guttural grunt, refusing to engage. The irony is a physical weight in his throat. Maternal issues? He doesn't even have a mother. He has a titanium test tube, a cold laboratory in Cadmus, and a genetic cocktail split cleanly between a solar-powered alien god and a ruthless corporate sociopath.
"He's just being gloomy," M'gann interjects, her voice perfectly capturing Tuppence’s nasally, valley-girl cadence. She shifts in her seat, leaning forward with an engineered air of dramatic revelation. "Honestly, Doctor? I think you're looking at the wrong side of the family tree. The maternal stuff is whatever. Our problem? It’s definitely a father thing."
Conner’s eyes snap toward her, a silent, furious warning flashing in his blue irises. *Drop it, M'gann,* he thinks, though he doesn't dare risk a telepathic shout that Strange might somehow pick up through the prison's dampening fields. "Shut up, Tuppence," he barks out loud, his gravelly Tommy voice scraping against his throat. "Nobody asked you."
"Oh, let her proceed, Tommy," Strange says, a thin, deeply unsettling smile creeping onto his lips. He adjusts his glasses, leaning forward. "Insight from a sibling can be a powerful mirror. Go on, Tuppence. Tell me about this father figure."
M'gann glances at Conner, a flicker of genuine apology passing through her eyes before she hardens her expression back into Tuppence's petulant pout. "It's just... Tommy here carries this massive chip on his shoulder. He yearns for it, you know? He wants to be exactly like his dad. He wants to walk into a room and have everyone shake because he's wearing those giant shoes. But they’re completely estranged. His old man won't look at him, won't acknowledge him, treats him like he's some kind of broken tool instead of a son. So Tommy just throws tantrums to get his attention."
Every syllable feels like an electric shock straight to Conner's core. She isn't talking about the real Terror twins' father. She is analyzing him. She is pulling apart his desperate, failed attempts to connect with Superman—the cold rejections at Mount Justice, the turning away of a hero who couldn't bear to look at his own living clone. A raw, primal fury surges through Conner's veins. He stands up so violently that his heavy steel chair screeches backward across the concrete floor, leaving a dark skid mark. He slams both fists down onto Hugo Strange’s desk, the thick reinforced wood groaning under the manufactured impact.
"I said *shut the hell up!*" Conner roars, his vision swimming with a dangerous, hot haze. "You don't know anything about my dad! You don't know what I want, and you don't know what it's like to have your own blood treat you like a freak! So keep your mouth shut before I make you!"
M'gann recoils sharply, her shoulders tensing as she shrinks back into her seat. The terror on her face is only half-acted; Conner’s outburst carries a terrifyingly genuine edge of absolute heartbreak and rage. Strange doesn't flinch. He merely watches the rising and falling of Conner's broad chest, a methodical gleam in his eyes as he scribbles a rapid note on his pad.
"Fascinating," the doctor murmurs quietly. "A classic displacement of paternal resentment. Sit down, Tommy. I believe we are finally making real progress."
Conner stands there for three long seconds, breathing heavily, before slowly sinking back into his chair. He glers at M'gann, his teeth ground together so tightly his jaw aches. She looks away, her hands trembling in her lap. Deep within the humid, moisture-choked belly of the Belle Reve laundry room, the atmosphere is heavy with the scent of industrial bleach and wet cotton. Steam rises in thick, white plumes from the massive, rotating washing cylinders, cloaking the figures moving through the shadows.
Icicle Senior stands by a long steel folding table, his sharp, frosty features completely unbothered by the stifling heat. Surrounding him are his trusted inner circle: Leonard Snart, Victor Fries, and a few high-tier muscle inmates. A large, wooden crate of incoming prison-issued uniforms sits split open on the table, but they aren't interested in the fabric. Senior reaches his hand deep into the center of a neatly folded stack of orange jumpsuits, pulling out a heavy, specialized metallic casing. He pries it open, revealing a series of advanced, sub-zero micro-compressors and localized thermal-grid bypasses. The stolen tech gleams under the dim maintenance lights.
"Perfect," Senior rumbles, his voice like grinding glaciers. He passes a localized power-core module to Captain Cold, who inspects it with a practiced, criminal eye. "The shipment is exactly as promised. The foundation of our liberation."
A few paces away, Warden Amanda Wilcox stands with her arms crossed over her chest, her eyes sharp and completely unforgiving. Two heavily armed guards stand at her flanks, their rifles trained directly on the meta-humans. Wilcox’s right hand never strays more than an inch from the master control pad mounted to her tactical belt—the primary trigger for the high-voltage inhibitor collars resting snugly against the villains' necks.
"Keep your hands where I can see them, Mahkent," Wilcox warns, her voice cutting through the steam like a razor. "You get to sort the laundry. You don't get to linger. One wrong move and I will cook you from the inside out."
Senior glances at her over his shoulder, a deceptive, compliant smile stretching across his pale face. "Of course, Warden. Just ensuring the new uniforms meet the facility's high standards. We wouldn't want anyone catching a chill."
Beside him, Mister Freeze turns a heavy, regulatory valve on a nearby steam pipe, his expression entirely deadpan as the ice-villains silently rejoice over the hidden cargo right under the warden's nose. The prison mess hall is a chaotic symphony of clinking plastic trays, low murmurs, and the heavy, rhythmic thud of guards patrolling the perimeter. High up on the concrete wall, a reinforced television screen flickers with a live news broadcast from GBS.
The camera pans across a devastated city street where the Martian Manhunter stands tall, his cape billowing as he hands a heavily restrained, unconscious figure over to local authorities. The news anchor’s voice cuts through the ambient noise of the cafeteria: "...in a spectacular joint effort, the Justice League has successfully apprehended the rogue technopath known as the Headmaster, marking another massive victory for global security..."
At a central table, Icicle Senior tracks the broadcast with a calculating glare. He taps a thick finger against his tray, counting. "That makes the green martian accounted for," he says quietly to Captain Cold. "With Superman in Metropolis, Batman in Gotham, and the rest of their little league scattered across the Eastern seaboard... our window is wide open."
"What about the red android?" Cold asks, leaning in, his eyes darting toward the guards. "Tornado hasn't been spotted on the grid in forty-eight hours."
Senior dismisses the concern with a sharp flick of his wrist. "Red Tornado is a machine. If he intervenes, we freeze his pneumatic joints and turn his internal processors into blocks of ice. He cannot stop what is coming."
"Excuse me, gentlemen," a timid, high-pitched voice interrupts.
Edward Nygma slides into the open seat at the edge of the table, offering a twitchy, desperate smile. He adjusts his prison jumpsuit, trying to project an aura of intellectual superiority. "Speaking of storms and cold fronts... I have a rather exquisite riddle that perfectly aligns with our current... meteorological forecast. What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the—"
"Get out of here, Nygma," Senior snaps without even looking at him. His voice is flat, absolute, and devoid of any patience.
"But I—"
"He said beat it, freak," a massive inmate from the next table rumbles, throwing a piece of stale bread at Nygma's chest.
The surrounding tables erupt into cruel, boisterous laughter. Nygma’s face turns a bright, humiliated crimson. He stands up hastily, clutching his tray to his chest as his posture crumbles. "Fine," he mutters resentfully, his voice shaking with bitter rage as he slinks away toward the trash chutes. "Laugh now. See if I don't team up with Oswald when I get out of here. At least the Penguin appreciates the finer nuances of a criminal mind..."
At a table tucked into the shadow of a concrete pillar, Conner sits with Cameron Mahkent. Conner—still utilizing his "Conair" alias when speaking to Cam—picks at a bowl of gray slop, his mind racing through the tactical layout of the prison. Across from him, Cameron is leaning back, his arms draped over the bench, looking completely detached from the tension filling the room. He isn't looking at the television, and he certainly isn't looking at his father.
"Hey," Conner says, dropping his voice to a quiet, civilian register. He nods toward the head table where Icicle Senior is holding court. "Why aren't you sitting over there with him? He’s the big boss, right? Thought you’d want to be right in the center of the action."
Cameron lets out a short, cynical laugh, his white-blonde hair falling across his forehead. "Please. Sit with the old man so he can tell me my breathing technique is wrong? Pass. I’m not interested in wasting my breath trying to get his approval anymore, Conair. It's a losing game."
Conner looks down at his tray, a strange, hollow pang of familiarity striking his chest. "Yeah," he murmurs softly. "I get that. More than you know."
"But hey," Cameron says, his voice suddenly shifting, losing its defensive edge and taking on a low, syrupy warmth. He slides a few inches closer along the bench, his knee lightly brushing against Conner’s thigh. The contact sends a sudden, unexpected jolt of electricity straight up Conner's spine. "I’m way more interested in discussing all things Conair. Where'd a big, gorgeous block of muscle like you come from anyway? You don't exactly talk like a lifetime criminal."
Conner blinks, his breath hitching in his throat. He looks up, meeting Cameron’s gaze. The ice-villain is looking at him with an intense, unfiltered appreciation, a genuine playful smirk dancing on his lips. There is no judgment there, no expectation for Conner to be a perfect hero, or a perfect clone, or a perfect anything. He just sees him. In that quiet, chaotic fraction of a second, amidst the clinking of prison trays and the threat of an impending riot, Conner feels a sudden clarity wash over him. The confusion he had been carrying about his orientation, the awkwardness with M'gann—it all evaporates, replaced by a sudden, undeniable realization. I am falling for this guy.
Before he can process the thought, a sharp shout shatters the peace of the mess hall. Across the room, Mister Freeze suddenly stands up, slamming his heavy plastic tray onto the floor. The gray food splatters across the concrete. "This facility is an insult to scientific progress!" Freeze roars, his staged outburst perfectly executed. "The thermal regulation in these sectors is completely unacceptable!"
Warden Wilcox is on him in a second. "Sit down, Fries!" she barks, drawing her stun baton.
Freeze lunges forward, grabbing a nearby guard by the collar. Wilcox doesn't hesitate; she smashes her thumb down on her belt control pad. A blinding blue arc of electricity erupts from Freeze's collar. He lets out a strained, muffled groan before collapsing heavily into the arms of the guards, who immediately begin dragging his limp body toward the administration wing—straight to Amanda Waller’s office.
In the ensuing commotion, Icicle Senior hurries over to Cameron’s table, his expression uncharacteristically strained. "Junior, we have a problem," Senior whispers harshly. "The comms are down in the secondary routing. I can't establish contact with Killer Frost in the women's wing. If she doesn't drop the structural dampeners on her side, the western wall won't give."
Cameron frowns, looking panicked. "What? Well, what do you want me to do about it? I can't yell through three feet of reinforced concrete!"
Conner recognizes the tactical opportunity instantly. If the villains can't coordinate, the breakout fails—but if he can control the flow of communication, he can steer the situation exactly where the Team needs it to go.
"Hey," Conner says, stepping into Senior's line of sight, adopting Tommy's gravelly tone. "I can help with that."
Senior glers at him, entirely skeptical. "You? And how are you going to reach the women's wing, boy?"
"Me and my twin sister, Tuppence... we got a thing," Conner lies smoothly, tapping his temple. "A telepathic link. Twin intuition, whatever you want to call it. She's over in the women's wing right now sharing a cell with Frost. I can put a message right through her head to Frost."
Senior narrows his eyes, his cynical gaze scanning Conner’s face for any hint of deception. The silence stretches, thick and dangerous. Finally, Senior lets out a harsh breath. "Fine. Do it. Tell Frost the breakout is happening *now*. She needs to prime the structural charges immediately."
Conner nods, closing his eyes to simulate concentration. In reality, he reaches into the quiet spaces of his mind, projecting his thoughts across the facility. M'gann. It's Conner. The ice villains are launching the breakout. They think you're passing the word to Killer Frost. Keep the illusion up, but get ready.
Received, Conner, M'gann's voice echoes back, sharp and alert. I will manage Frost. Be careful.
Conner opens his eyes, looking back at Senior. "Done. She's on it."
Senior grunts, satisfied, and hurries away to rally the rest of the heavy hitters. As soon as his father is out of earshot, Cameron lets out a low whistle, sliding right back into Conner’s personal space.
"A telepathic twin link? Damn, Conair," Cameron purrs, his voice dropping right back into that devastatingly smooth, flirty cadence. He leans his shoulder against Conner’s broad chest. "You just full of surprises, aren't you? Makes me wonder what else you can do with that mind of yours."
Conner feels a dark flush creep up his neck, a helpless, genuine smile breaking through his tough-guy disguise as he looks down at the white-haired boy. "Maybe I'll show you when we get out of here, Cam."
In the high-security sanctuary of Director Amanda Waller’s main office, Mister Freeze lies slumped in a heavy restraint chair. Amanda Waller stands behind her desk, her posture commanding, her eyes tracking the security feeds with total authority.
"Your little tantrum in the cafeteria just earned you a week in solitary, Fries," Waller says coldly, not even looking at him.
Suddenly, Freeze’s fingers twitch. The localized sub-zero micro-compressors he smuggled inside his uniform activate with a sharp, mechanical hiss. A dense wave of localized frost erupts from his sleeves, instantly creeping up the arms of the two guards standing beside him. The guards scream as their limbs are instantly encased in solid, brittle ice, their weapons clattering to the floor. Freeze snaps his restraints with a surge of cryo-enhanced strength, ripping the inhibitor collar off his neck and hurling it across the room. Waller’s instincts are instantaneous.
She dives across her desk, her hand slamming onto the primary red lockdown matrix button. "Code Red! General lockdown! Activate all security barriers!" she roars into her comms.
The prison alarms begin to blare—a deafening, rhythmic klaxon that bathes the hallways in flashing crimson light. Heavy, foot-thick steel blast doors begin to slide down across every corridor, sealing the wings into isolated pockets. But Freeze is already at the primary security console. He smashes his frozen fist into the main terminal, overriding the environmental controls.
"An admirable effort, Director," Freeze says, his voice flat as he forces the system diagnostics to cycle. "But the grid belongs to the cold now."
With a massive surge of feedback, the main power grid fractures. Across the entire facility, a synchronized, mechanical click echoes through the cell blocks. Every single inhibitor collar flashes green, then goes entirely dead. In the male wing, a massive roar of triumph erupts from a hundred criminal throats as the dampening fields drop. Cells slide open automatically as the power grid fails. Conner sprints through the chaos, staying close to Cameron and Icicle Senior.
"Tommy!" Senior shouts over the roar of the crowd. "What’s the status on the women’s wing? Is Frost moving?"
Before Conner can answer, M'gann’s voice fractures into his mind, screaming with sudden, absolute panic. Conner! Help! Frost was about to execute a surrendered guard—I had to stop her! I used my telekinesis to fling her back, but she saw me! My cover is completely blown—The telepathic link suddenly cuts off with a sharp, static-like snap of mental feedback.
Conner stumbles, clutching his head as a sharp pain shoots behind his eyes. M'gann? M'gann, answer me! Nothing. The mental silence is absolute. A cold dread settles deep into his stomach.
"Well?" Senior demands, grabbing Conner's arm, his frosty grip biting into the fake skin. "What did your sister say? Is the guard dead? Is the path clear?"
Conner forces his expression into a cold, morally gray mask of indifference, desperate to keep the villains moving forward so he can reach the women's wing. He shrugs casually, leaning into the ruthless "Tommy Terror" persona while throwing a subtle, reassuring glance at Cameron. "Yeah, the guard's a corpse," Conner lies smoothly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Frost handled it. The women's wing is moving. We're on schedule, Senior." He turns his head slightly, giving Cam a slow, deliberate wink. "Gotta keep the path clear for my boy Cam, right?"
Cameron lets out a cocky, thrilled laugh, his chest swelling with pride. "See that, Dad? My crew gets results."
In the main administrative hub, Amanda Waller, Dr. Hugo Strange, and a dozen guards find themselves barricaded inside a secure holding cell, locked in by their own automated system. The atmospheric controls have been completely inverted; the temperature in the room is dropping rapidly, their breath pluming into thick white clouds.
Outside the reinforced glass, Brick stands with his arms crossed, a massive, arrogant grin on his face. "Cozy in there, Warden?" he jeers, tapping his chest. "Good thing our new uniforms got built-in thermal tech. We’re sitting pretty out here while you freeze."
Waller presses her hands against the glass, her eyes blazing with absolute fury despite her shivering frame. "You think you're escaping, Brick? Every federal asset from here to Washington is already converging on this coordinate. You’re just changing cells."
Brick’s face darkens with sudden rage. He raises a massive, rocky fist to smash the glass, but Hugo Strange steps forward from the shadows inside the cell, his voice calm, measured, and entirely transactional. "I would highly advise against that, Brick. It is in our collective best interest to keep Director Waller alive. A living hostage provides leverage; a corpse merely provides a reason for the military to use lethal force. Let the cold do its work."
Brick glares at the doctor for a long moment before slowly lowering his fist, grunting in reluctant agreement. Meanwhile, in the adjoining corridor, Icicle Senior, Captain Cold, and Mister Freeze combine their powers. Three concentrated streams of absolute-zero energy blast against the foot-thick steel lockdown barriers. The metal groans, turning a pale, frosted white as the extreme temperature alters its molecular structure, rendering it incredibly brittle.
"Now!" Senior shouts.
Mammoth and Blockbuster step forward, slamming their massive shoulders into the frozen steel. With a sound like shattering glass, the heavy barriers erupt into a thousand harmless shards. The path to the central laundry room is open.
Conner stands at the back of the crowd, his eyes fixed on the path ahead. He tries one more time to project his voice. M'gann? Can you hear me? Still, there is only silence. His fists clench until his knuckles turn white. Hold on. I’m coming.
Senior turns to Conner and Cameron. "The laundry room adjoins the women's wing's western wall. Frost should be breaking through from her side right now. You two get down there and tear that wall to the ground!"
"On it," Cameron says, gesturing for Conner to follow.
The laundry room is a disaster area of scattered clothes and broken machinery. Conner stands before the thick, reinforced concrete wall that separates the male and female populations. He strikes it with a manufactured punch, cracking the surface, but his mind is working ten times faster than his fists.
He looks back at the doorway. The rest of the inmates are still clearing the corridor behind them. If he tears this wall down right now, a flood of fifty heavily armed, violent meta-humans will pour into the women's wing. He won't be able to protect M'gann from Frost and keep his cover alive if he has to fight off the entire prison population simultaneously. He needs to isolate the problem. He needs to get rid of Cameron's father and the heavy hitters. He stops punching, turning to Cameron with an expression of sudden, manufactured panic.
"Cam, stop," Conner says, grabbing the boy’s shoulders.
Cameron blinks, stopping a localized frost blast. "What's wrong, Conair?"
"My sister... she just got back through to me," Conner lies, his voice urgent, his hands tightening on Cam's shoulders. "The guards... they initiated a secondary backup override from Waller's primary terminal. They’re turning the women’s collars back on right now. Frost is already down. If we don't stop them, they’re going to cycle the grid and fry us next."
Cameron’s eyes go wide with panic. "What? No, no, no! We gotta go tell my dad! He’ll know what to do—"
"No!" Conner cuts him off, pulling Cam just an inch closer, his voice dropping into a low, intense, and deeply intimate tone. He looks straight into Cameron’s eyes, appealing directly to the boy’s desperate desire to be seen as a leader in his own right. "Think about it, Cam. If you run back to your old man right now, he's just gonna call you a coward and take the credit for fixing it. This is *your* moment. You and me. We go up to Waller’s office, we smash the backup override, and we save the entire breakout. You'll be the one running the show, not him."
Cameron stares at him, his breath catching as Conner's words sink in. The vanity, the yearning for independence, and the raw attraction he feels for Conner all combine into a sudden surge of confidence. He smirks, his posture straightening. "You're right. Screw the old man. Let’s go take the castle."
They sprint through the auxiliary maintenance corridors, bypassing the main crowd, and arrive at the reinforced entrance of the administrative wing. Standing guard outside Waller’s primary office are Professor Ojo, Hook, and Abra Kadabra—assigned by Senior to ensure no one interferes with the terminal.
"Hold it right there, kids," Hook says, raising his cybernetic hand. "Senior's orders. Nobody goes inside."
Conner doesn't even slow down. He launches himself forward, his heavy fist connecting squarely with Professor Ojo’s jaw before the technopath can even raise his visor. Ojo hits the floor hard, unconscious.
"Hey!" Abra Kadabra shouts, raising his theatrical wand, but Cameron is already moving. With a swift, fluid motion, Cam unleashes a sweeping wave of absolute-zero ice across the floor, instantly encasing both Hook and Kadabra up to their necks in solid, inescapable frost.
"Nice shot, Cam," Conner says, rushing toward the heavy office doors. "Keep watch out here. Make sure nobody sneaks up on us while I ensure those collars stay completely dead."
As Conner steps past the frozen guards, Ojo groans on the floor, his visor flickering back to life. He looks up at Cameron, his voice a desperate, raspy wheeze. "Mahkent... listen to me... you're being swindled! That’s not Terror... look at his face... it’s the clo—"
Before Ojo can finish the sentence, Conner steps back out of the doorway, his expression entirely grim. With a single, fluid motion, he drives a heavy boot into the side of Ojo's head, knocking the professor into a deep, definitive unconsciousness.
"Don't listen to him, Cam," Conner says smoothly, giving Cameron a quick, reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Guy's brain is scrambled from the hit. Watch the hall. I'll be right out."
Conner steps inside the office, shutting the door behind him. He locates the primary mainframe terminal, his fingers flying across the override keys. He doesn't disable the backup; instead, he triggers the localized auxiliary grid restart sequence. He locks the protocol, ensuring it will fire in exactly sixty seconds, then walks back out into the hall.
Moments later, a high-pitched, electronic whine echoes through the entire facility.
Across the cell blocks, the cafeteria, and the corridors, every single inhibitor collar suddenly blares a bright, violent crimson. With a synchronized, massive crackle of high-voltage electricity, ninety percent of the rioting inmates are instantly zapped with a localized neural shock. They drop to the concrete floor like stones, completely unconscious. Down in the central corridor, Icicle Senior’s collar sparks, but his heavy thermal uniform buffers the initial shock. He stumbles, gasping for air as he realizes his entire army has just been neutralized in a single second. Enraged, he storms back toward Waller’s office, looking for an explanation.
He bursts into the administrative wing, finding Amanda Waller and her staff already freed from their cell by the automated system restart. "Waller!" Senior roars, raising an icy fist. "What did you do?!"
Waller stands her ground, her face entirely devoid of fear. "I didn't do anything, Mahkent. Your little revolution just suffered a systemic failure."
As Senior lunges forward to strike her, a shadow cuts across the room. Dr. Hugo Strange steps forward with surprising, fluid speed. Utilizing a heavy, specialized security baton, Strange delivers a precise, crushing blow to the back of Icicle Senior’s neck. The older villain lets out a muffled choke before collapsing face-first into the linoleum, completely out cold. In the adjacent hallway, Mister Freeze steps out from the shadows, his frosty gaze fixed entirely on Cameron and Conner, who are standing by the entrance. Freeze looks at the unconscious forms of the guards, then back to the flashing terminal lights.
"You," Freeze says, his voice flat, analytical, and dangerous. "The grid restart originated from this sector. You botched the liberation."
Cameron takes a defensive step forward, his hands crackling with frost. "What? No we didn't! We came up here to stop them from turning the collars back on! We tried to save it!"
Conner steps up beside Cam, his voice dropping into a dark, gravelly accusation. "Don't listen to him, Cam. Look at him. Freeze didn't want the breakout to succeed under your dad's name. He’s staging a coup. He let the grid reset so he could take out Senior and run the facility himself!"
"A logical fallacy," Freeze states coldly. "But irrelevant. You will be neutralized."
The hallway erupts into a localized blizzard. Cameron lunges forward, matching his cryokinetic blasts directly against Freeze’s advanced ice-tech. The two forces of absolute zero collide in a blinding explosion of white frost and shattering icicles, the air turning so cold it threatens to freeze the oxygen in their lungs. Suddenly, the heavy doors behind them burst open. Mammoth and Blockbuster—having partially resisted the collar shock due to their massive meta-metabolism—lunge into the hallway, their eyes fixed on Conner.
"I got the big guys, Cam!" Conner shouts. "Keep Freeze busy!"
Conner dives into the fray, his fists flying as he engages the two massive powerhouses. He ducks beneath a sweeping punch from Blockbuster, driving a brutal combination into Mammoth's ribs. The sheer force of the impact shakes the concrete structure, but the two giants keep coming, their raw mass pinning Conner against the wall. Across the room, Freeze's experience overrides Cameron’s youth. With a brutal, concentrated burst of cryo-pressure, Freeze shatters Cameron’s defensive shield, sending the boy crashing backward into a row of lockers. Freeze steps forward, raising his ice-cannon to seal Cameron in a permanent block of frost.
"Cam!" Conner roars. Seeing his boy in danger triggers something fierce and unyielding deep within his chest. He throws off Mammoth with a massive surge of his true strength, slamming the giant into Blockbuster. "Trade off! Now!"
Conner sprints across the ice, leaping over Freeze's line of fire. Cameron, catching the cue instantly, rolls to the side and unleashes a double-handed torrent of flash-freeze energy directly at the two dazed powerhouses. Mammoth and Blockbuster are instantly encased from head to toe in a thick, multi-layered mountain of solid ice, locking them in place. Meanwhile, Conner closes the distance on Mister Freeze. Before the scientist can adjust his aim, Conner brings both fists down in a crushing, overhead strike directly onto Freeze's reinforced glass helmet dome.
The glass shatters with a deafening crack. The immediate influx of ambient, warm room air causes Freeze’s localized life-support systems to rupture.
"No... the temperature..." Freeze gasps, his skin instantly blistering. Realizing his survival depends on immediate sub-zero containment, Freeze is forced to turn his own ice-cannon inward, completely encasing himself in a localized, permanent block of self-inflicted ice to preserve his life functions.
The hallway falls dead silent, save for the heavy breathing of the two boys.
"Tuppence!" Conner shouts, the temporary "Tommy Terror" persona moderately slipping away as his real voice rings out, filled with a desperate, terrifying panic.
He runs down the corridor, blowing past the security checkpoints, and smashes through the final reinforced doorway leading into the women's wing. The space is a hollow, frozen wasteland. Sitting in the center of the room is Killer Frost, a cruel, triumphant grin plastered across her icy face.
"Looking for your sister, big guy?" Frost jeers, gesturing toward the corner of the room. "Too bad. She tried to play hero. So I turned her into a decoration."
Conner’s heart completely stops. Standing against the wall is M'gann. She is completely encased in a thick, opaque pillar of jagged, dark ice. Her eyes are closed, her features pale and completely static beneath the frozen surface. To the naked eye, she looks entirely dead—a lifeless, frozen statue. A raw, agonizing scream of pure sorrow and rage tears out of Conner's throat. The sheer emotional force of it causes his true alien heritage to flare to life. The bio-synthetic makeup across his face begins to crack, his eyes burning with a dangerous, unbridled fury.
Before Frost can even raise her hands, Devastation lunges out from the shadows, her massive, enhanced fists swinging toward Conner's head. Conner doesn't duck. He takes the blow squarely to the jaw, barely flinching, and counters with a brutal, single-handed strike that lifts Devastation completely off her feet and hurls her across the room.
Killer Frost tries to take aim, her hands glowing with white-hot cold, trying to find a clean shot through the melee. "Hold still, you freak!" she screams.
Conner catches Devastation by the throat as she lunges again, using her massive, enhanced body as a physical shield. Frost’s concentrated beam of absolute-zero ice slams directly into Devastation’s back, instantly freezing her solid. With a grunt of pure effort, Conner hurls the frozen body of Devastation straight at Killer Frost. The two villains collide with a sickening thud, crashing into the concrete wall and knocking them both out cold. Conner drops to his knees before the pillar of ice containing M'gann. The tough-guy persona is entirely gone, replaced by a raw, vulnerable teenager terrified of losing his closest friend.
Cameron steps into the room, his eyes wide as he looks at the devastation, then at the frozen form of "Tuppence." "Oh, damn... Tommy, I'm so sorry... your sister..."
Conner doesn't hear him. The sorrow is a crushing weight in his lungs. He raises a massive, trembling fist, his knuckles hovering just an inch away from the surface of the ice, his muscles bunching as he prepares to smash it to pieces with all his strength.
"Tommy, wait! Don't!" Cameron shouts, leaping forward and grabbing Conner's wrist, holding him back with everything he has. "If you punch that ice with your strength, it won't just break the frost—it'll shatter her! You'll kill her!"
Conner’s arm goes limp. He sinks against the base of the pillar, pressing his forehead against the cold, unyielding surface. He closes his eyes, reaching out with the absolute desperate remnants of his mind, projecting a silent, weeping plea into the dark. M'gann... please. Don't leave me. I’m sorry I yelled at you in the office. I'm sorry for everything. Please, just breathe. Open your eyes. Don't leave me alone.
For a long, agonizing second, there is nothing.
Then, deep within the center of the pillar, a soft, green light flickers. A sharp, structural crack echoes through the room. The jagged ice begins to fracture, webbed lines of white spreading rapidly across the surface. With a loud, resonant snap, the entire pillar erupts outward, collapsing into a harmless pile of loose slush. M'gann stumbles forward, coughing softly as her eyes flutter open. Her Martian physiology—naturally resistant to extreme temperatures once she adapts—has kept her vital organs completely protected. She blinks against the light, looking thoroughly exhausted but entirely unharmed.
"You know..." M'gann gasps quietly, rubbing her arms as she offers a weak, teasing smile. "It's... it's actually pretty cold from where I come from..."
Conner doesn't let her finish. He lunges forward, throwing his broad arms around her shoulders and pulling her into a fierce, desperate hug, burying his face into her hair. He holds her so tightly her ribs groan, his shoulders shaking with relief. As he holds her, Conner glances over her shoulder at Cameron, who is standing a few feet away, watching the reunion with a surprisingly soft, relieved expression on his face. Conner catches M'gann’s mind, sending a deliberate, private telepathic message into her head. M'gann... I need a favor. I have a massive crush on Junior. Let's finish this play.
M'gann blinks against his shoulder, a sudden, knowing sparkle illuminating her green eyes as she pulls back from the hug. She turns her head, looking directly at Cameron with a perfectly acted expression of sisterly teasing. "So," M'gann says, her voice carrying Tuppence's perfect cadence. "You're the boy my brother's in love with?"
Conner's face turns an instant, brilliant shade of red. He stands up hastily, throwing his hands in the air. "What the fuck? Less talk, more escape!"
Cameron freezes, his jaw dropping slightly as a slow, intensely wicked grin spreads across his pale face. He steps into Conner's personal space, his icy blue eyes locked entirely onto Conner’s blushing features. "In love, huh?" Cameron purrs, his voice dropping into that devastatingly deep, intimate drawl. He reaches out, wrapping a hand around the back of Conner’s neck, pulling him down until their faces are barely an inch apart. "We'll definitely have to talk about that sometime, Conair. But for now—"
Cameron closes the distance, pulling Conner down into a big, heavy, and intensely passionate smacking kiss right in the middle of the ruined prison wing. Conner’s eyes widen in brief shock before he completely melts into the contact. He wraps his large hands around Cameron’s waist, kissing him back with a fierce, unbridled passion that answers every question he’s been asking himself for the last three weeks. He might still tell his teammates he's questioning his orientation, but right now, in this frozen room, he is leaning very, very much toward gay. Cameron smiles into the kiss, slowly pulling back with a breathless, thrilled laugh. He doesn't let go of Conner’s hand; instead, he laces his fingers tightly through Conner’s broad knuckles, turning toward the open exit.
"Come on, big guy," Cameron says, his eyes bright with a sudden, beautiful rebellion as he tugs Conner forward. "Let's get out of here."
