Want That Back

Summary:

Nancy discovers she’s pregnant during Season Four, in the height of dealing with Vecna.

Work Text:

Nancy Wheeler stared at the plastic stick setting on her bathroom counter- two pink lines had appeared five minutes ago. Of course she knew what that meant, during the fight of their lives- she had to get herself pregnant. Well, it had only been half her fault- really. Jonathan was in that room too, before he left for California with Joyce, El and Will.

Jonathan.

How would he react? They were 3000 miles apart, and now she was having his kid. Jonathan had an abusive father in Lonnie- so, she didn’t know he would act to the reality of being a father himself. Nancy was scared herself, Karen Wheeler loved her children but- she was so damn stifling causing her kids to constantly lie to her- even before shit hit the fan. Ted- well, he went to work and sat in front of the television set. That summed up her father’s life, she really didn’t have much of a relationship with either of her parents. Not really. Sometimes, Nancy envied the relationship Joyce had with Jonathan. They were both still in high school, Nancy’s career would have to wait- which irritated her to no end. Nancy didn’t want to be trapped in a loveless marriage like her parents, she drew in a deep breath and threw the stick away. Opening the bathroom door, she crossed the room and sat on her bed- dialing a number and pressing the phone to her ear.

“Hello?” She noted how his voice sounded tired- now it always did, very different from the boy she had fallen for in high school.

“..Hello?” The voice repeated, a little annoyed.

“Look, if you don’t say anything- I’m hanging up-“ his voice was very agitated now, Nancy had zoned out.

“No! Steve- Don’t hang up!” Rushed out of Nancy’s mouth, quickly.

“Nance? Why the hell didn’t you say something the first two times I said hello?” Steve Harrington sat up in bed, confused.

“I…zoned out. I’m sorry.” Nancy apologized, which she had.

“Are you alright? Is it Vecna? Did something happen?” Questions came flooding out of Steve’s mouth, Nancy had to smile at how much he cared.

“No- it’s nothing like that. I was just…nervous.” That wasn’t a lie either.

“Nervous? To talk to me?” Steve didn’t get it.

“Yeah.” Nancy sighed, knowing it wouldn’t make sense to Steve- she would have to make something up. Nancy couldn’t tell Steve before Jonathan, wouldn’t that be wrong? Unethical?

“Um- well…talk to me? Say words?” Steve asked, at this point very confused.

“Say words?” Laughter bubbled up from Nancy’s stomach, Steve always managed to make her do that.

“That’s usually how sentences work.” Steve countered. That was fair.

“Do you know anything about- cars?” It was the only thing Nancy could think of on the spot.

“Cars?” Steve repeated, like he had never heard the word in his life.

“Yes Steve, Cars. Vroom Vroom.” Nancy rolled her eyes.

“Nance, I know what sound cars make- thanks.” Steve wasn’t that stupid.

“I was just making sure.” Nancy replied.

“Between you and Robin, I can’t catch a break.” Steve complained.

“You never answered my question.” Nancy regretted saying that, because now she would have to come up with another excuse. She really didn’t like lying to Steve.

“I guess I know the basics- I’m not a mechanic. I’m a Harrington. My family has old money- not repair shops. Why would you call me? Of all the people you could call? I feel like there are better people for this.” Steve was still confused.

“Because you save the day.” Nancy simply said, Steve blushed at her words.

“Okay, fine. What’s wrong with your car?” Steve laughed, taking the compliment.

“It’s making a…noise.” Nancy trailed off.

“A noise? You called me for a noise?” Steve asked to clarify.

“Yeah.” Nancy confirmed.

“Nancy Wheeler, you are…I don’t even know what you are.” Steve chuckled, shaking his head.
