It wasn’t the first time Vergil had passed through a portal opened by the Yamato, but this had been . . . extra disorienting, and his brother was-
‟Dante!” Vergil bolted inside. ‟I’ve been looking for you! You’re here! And- and here!” He grinned, though he couldn’t help but wonder what Dante was doing here, not only in the human realm but in a diner, eating. ‟I came through that weird portal of the Yamato’s, and-”
Dante shouted his name, swore, thumped his shoulder, but he was grinning and teary, nearly falling into Vergil’s arms. He was happy to see Vergil, and not stabbing him, and Vergil hugged him tight.
He clung just as hard, rubbing his cheek against Vergil’s, and his heart ached. All he’d wanted for years was for Dante to look back at him the way- for Dante to welcome him, want him. . .
He should have known, he thought what felt like bare minutes later looking at a warped mirror of himself - one hand on the Yamato at his hip, high collar stamped with Makaian patterns; a banner no human could read - blocking him from Dante. Should have known this was not his brother, not his Dante. His Dante would never-
But this one reached for his twin, and the mirror Vergil stepped back, closer, almost softening.
Vergil would never be foolish enough to think Dante, any version, or . . . even himself, would be so careless, but they almost seemed forget him, looking at one another.
Though he had railed at first, by the time Dante murmured about fate he already knew this was not his reality, and while a part of him longed to stay with this version of his twin who wanted him, who had looked at him with an open, adoring gaze. . .
The mirror of himself snarled again, eyes narrow, and Vergil backed away, pressing one hand to his chest. His heart ached impossibly.
Suddenly he wanted nothing more than to be back in his reality, away from- from this pair, so like and yet so painfully unlike anything he could ever have.
The Yamato had brought him here, surely it could send him back, Vergil thought, and struggled to explain. His mirror was wary and unhappy, but the Yamato hummed in his hand, and after several exhausting stumbles between Makai and the human realm, Vergil tumbled through a stomach-twisting freefall unlike any other and hit hard earth, no sign of the portal at his heels.
‟Where the fuck were you?” Dante demanded, snarling, and Vergil startled; he didn’t make it a single step before Dante’s fingers curled tight at his nape. ‟You’re my brother, you are not allowed to go anywhere-”
‟I wouldn’t want to.” Vergil interrupted, and Dante’s eyes narrowed, his lip curled to show his teeth. ‟I have only ever wanted to be with you.”
Dante lifted his chin, suspicion bleeding off him alongside fury, but he pulled Vergil in roughly, and did not stab him, and Vergil grinned, turning easily closer in Dante’s arms.
