Vacant Hearts Make For Great Homes

Summary:

Felix has been on his own since he was about 15. He didn't have any friends and both of his parents were not in the picture anymore. He goes to lectures at night and tries to make a living on minimal hours of sleep during the day at his convenience store job. However, rent had been getting harder to pay lately, meaning his work at the store just wasn't cutting it anymore.
It is on such a day, working at the convenience store, that Felix meets a group of people that just might change his life.

Chapter Text

I just want to be part of your symphony~

Rings loudly throughout the dull openness of Felix's apartment, making the feathers along his body bristle at annoyance from the sound. He rouses and quickly shuts it off, sitting weary still wrapped in his blanket as he squints to read the time in the black out of his room. His heart skips a beat as he stares at a taunting 10 on the screen instead of the usual 5 am he stuck to in order to have enough time to get ready for work. "Shit- I missed my first alarms."

He scrambles to get out of his bed, almost tripping on his covers as he tried to fast to push them off, rushing to push open his curtains and find clothes. He shimmies out of whatever he wore to bed and pulls on a decent, but clean, pair of jeans as well as a shirt to match and a hoodie he‘d only worn the day prior so far.

He then messily brushes through his hair and the accompanying downy feathers while brushing his teeth, trying to suppress the discomfort at seeing the out of place feathers that stuck out in his reflection because he had no time to preen them down right now. If it really bothered him, he could take care of the dishevled state of himself in the bathroom during his break for lunch.

He then takes off without having anything to eat, trying not to think about how messy he would appear from his clunky put-togetherness that morning because of his hurry and just hoped he wouldn‘t be fired.

In the end, he gets off with a long and thoughtout verbal warning before being sent out to put on his apron and work. He sighs lightly as he ties on the item, just very grateful he wasn‘t kicked out.

"Welcome in," he says to a group that walks in as he takes his place at the counter. Only one of them, a guy with black hair pulled back into a half up ponytail, pays him any mind and nods in greeting before following his friends to one of the screens you can order and pay at.

When the order comes in he inwardly sighs. Half the shit was overly complicated for no goddamn reason. Except for one—if you ignore the concerning 6 shot espresso—a lavender oat milk latte with a single cube of ice.

Felix can't help his small smile at that, finding it endearingly quirky that whoever wanted that had ordered it with just one ice cube. He decides to make that one last, so it would be the freshest when he handed it over.

It makes his exasperation at having to make a twice blended Venti Iced Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino with a caramel-lined cup, a double shot of espresso, 5 pumps of vanilla syrup, 3 pumps of caramel, 3 pumps of dark caramel, 5 pumps of white mocha, almond milk with 5 scoops of vanilla bean powder, and light whip, extra caramel drizzle, extra crunch topping, and extra cookie crumble just a little less painful.

He's mostly finished making all the drinks and is foaming milk for the hot chocolate, when the group approaches the counter with purchases.

"I'll be with you in just a sec! I'm almost finished with your drinks." Felix politely says to them, getting a few nods from them before they went back to conversing amongst each other.

He pours it over the hot chocolate and tops that with whipped cream before placing a dog bone treat in the center of it like the person who ordered it requested and snapping on the clear dome lid. A bit of a weird choice, but Felix wouldn't judge since he assumed it might have been for the floppy eared dog hybrid with the golden ears. And even if it wasn't he…would definitely probably be judging them. Hard. Because why are you eating dog treats??

While he's at it, Felix also finishes the iced caramel cloud macchiato by swirling whipped cream on the top and puts a lid on it.

With all the drinks done, he throws down seven paper wrapped straws and places the drinks on the counter two by two for the group to figure out themselves whose was whose and grab it themself.

Curious, though he subtly watches who grabs which drink, wanting to see if it matched their aesthetic or the vibe they gave off.

The dog hybrid does grab the one with the bone on it and Felix almost can't help laughing as he notices the man's tail wag excitedly at the sight of it. Maybe other shops never put a dog treat on it for him? Or perhaps he just liked it that much…

The sugary monstrosity with too many extra's in it that Felix never wanted to make ever a-fucking-gain is grabbed by a hybrid he honestly couldn't tell the kind of. Maybe a variety of rodent? But he was just guessing by the curved ears that had short brown fur on them because he really didn't know.

A tired looking wolf hybrid with light colored bags under his eyes pushes through the pack to grab the six shots of espresso. Yikes. Felix was mentally sending his condolences, they looked like a handful plus some. He probably needed it.

Next a mixed hybrid—a detail which Felix only noticed because mixes were a rare kind of occurance and rabbit hybrids didn't tend to have naturally colored pink fur on their ears at all or spirally pig tails—takes the unicorn frappe and whatever the refresher he had made was. The latter of which is handed to a distracted fennec fox, who was doing something on his phone and too engrossed conversing with the rat thing and rabbit hybrid to have been paying enough attention to grab his own drink.

And then the white-eared ferret takes the lavender one. Which Felix thinks suits everything about him, by the way.

They set their stuff on the counter and Felix starts picking thingd up and scanning them with the adept efficiency of an overworked cashier who had gotten far too good at quickly scanning barcodes.

His stomach growls as he's ringing up their stuff and he hopes none of them noticed. He glances up at the group really quick and notices that they're still too busy amongst themselves to really pay him attention. (He doesn't notice the ferret's round white ears twitching in that direction as he stares at Felix curiously, wondering why he was hungry.)

The wolf guy digs a card out of his wallet and holds it out for Felix to take and swipe. For some reason, he was really beginning to look like the perfect replica of an overworked stay-at-home mum in Felix's mind. He's reaching out to take it when the ferret turns and peers his big dumb eyes at the tired man and interrupts. "Channie, wait- I forgot there was something else i wanted to get."

'Channie' rolls his eyes over to look at him flatly. His expression clearly reads, 'Are you serious?' but he says, "Fine, go get it. Hurry up or I'll leave you to pay for all this yourself."

He didn't look like the type to do that (especially with his motherly disposition), but also Felix didn't personally know him, so he wouldn't put it past him to do such a thing to the other. The ferret bounds off with the permission and dissapears between a set of shelves.

A few minutes later, in which 'Channie' awkwardly had to wait for him to come back, he returns holding a clear plastic container with perishable food in it.

Mother Wolf (which is what Felix has now decided to call him in his head) raises a brow at the choice. "I thought you weren't hungry?"

The ferret just shrugs as he places it down on the counter.

It's a vegan katsu sandwich, Felix notices as he scans it since he would regularly buy one after a shift if he had the funds for it. Finally, he gets to take the card from Mother Wolf and swipe it.

"Would you like a bag for this?" Felix asks as the transaction goes through, to which the tired man politely shakes his head no. It goes through and he hands the card back into the man's waiting hand while the others take their things and begin leaving.

It's as they're walking off, most of them already out the door, that Felix notices the one guy left his sandwich. "Hey!" He lightly calls out in a yell to get the ferret's attention, "You forgot your sando." Trying not to regret calling it out as at least three of them who are not him turn and look back at him.

They are waved out by ferret, though, and seem to comply, since they walk out the door they're standing by and wait just outside it for him.

Ferret turns around when the people he's with are out before answering him.

"It's for you. You're hungry…right?"

Oh.

Felix tilts his head down to hide his face out of embarrassment.

He was hungry though.

"I am." He quietly confirms through the anxiety squeezing tight in his chest.

Through his bangs, Felix is just barely able to see how he nods and kind of smiles at him before turning back around and walking out the door (before Bangchan came back in himself to drag him out by the hood of his sweatshirt).

"Thank you!" Felix calls out as he's walking out, not wanting to seem ungrateful for the kind act.

At the smile he recieves when ferret looks back at him one more time because he clearly heard Felix thank him and wanted to be nice in return, the ball of anxiety in his chest unravels.

I'd just like to warn that this will be slow to update bc I don't really have a clue what I'm doing with this currently.
