Green finds a Frog

Work Text:

The Colours were walking home from school today since Sky had a sick bird at the sanctuary and Sun said she was going out with some friends today. So they were walking home along the path. It was going great so far, Blue and Red were occasionally jumping up and down trying to grab leaves from the trees. When the two got a leaf Vio would say what kind of leaf it was. Green was bouncing between walking with Vio and trying to remember the directions their parents had drilled into them. However, only Vio remembered all of them now.

Vio was leading-when he wasn’t looking at Blue and Reds leaves-and Green and the other two were following behind. They were all staying on the sidewalk unless they saw a particularly interesting plant, and they made sure to look both ways before crossing any roads. Everything was going great: Vio knew where they were going, and Blue and Red were chatting about slides. Green was sort of listening in to their conversation and occasionally butting in.

The way the colours were told to go home was a path with plants all along one side. There were small trees, grass with clovers in it, and many bushes and plants. In their walking the boys would occasionally stop and smell the flowers, or taste a particular nice looking leaf.

What should have been a 15 minute walk was taking much, much longer. School got out at 3:40 and it was now…umm…sometime after that. Other than none of them knowing the time and the mild wandering, everything was going swell!

Well, until he saw the frog. In his defense, frogs are cool, really cool. So when Green saw the frog in the middle of the street, he ran into the road to grab the frog, leaving his brothers shouting at him and a car or two to slam on their brakes. Nothing would stop him from getting to the Frog.

Green got to the frog only for it to hop away from him, it was a big frog. He wanted to hold that frog. He needed to hold that frog. So he ran after the frog, which continued to hop away.

He could still hear his brothers' panicked shouts and a car horn behind him but all of his attention was on the frog in front of him. It was ribbiting as it hopped away, luring him towards its alluring, green skin, which only fueled his determination. Green threw himself at the frog, and hoped that it would work.

“Green!”

Green opened his eyes to see the massive frog trying to wiggle its way out of his hands. In the corner of his eyes he could see Vio reaching out to pull him up. Green let himself be pulled up by his brothers, he didn’t care about the scrapes that would most likely be on his knees. He had the frog, so he was happy now.

“Why did you do that Green! Mrs. Mom and Mr. Dad said no jumping into the street!” Red fretted.

Green simply lifted up the frog that was still trying to escape, understanding lighting up in all of his brothers eyes.

“That's a huge frog! I wanna hold it!” Blue shouted jumping up and down. Vio simply stared in awe at the frog and Red started squealing.

“We gotta go show Sky and Sun! They’re gunna be so amazed!” Vio broke his stare and pulled Green up.

Red latched on to Vio and Blue and started to pull them all forward, well tried to at least. Blue was still bouncing up and down and Vio was holding onto Green. So they all just stumbled forward before righting themselves.

Green still held tightly onto his frog. Because that was what it was now, it was his frog and no one else's.

“I’m going to name him Sir Hops-a-lot.” Green decided, because he as the holder and finder of that frog got to name it.

“I wonder what kind of frog he is?” The question came from Blue who was now aiming his bouncing in a forwards motion.

With that, Vio took the lead again listing off different types of frogs that Sir Hops-a-lot could be. Blue bounced back and forth around his brothers while Red latched onto Vio shaking Vio’s arm while practically vibrating himself.

The boys walked the fastest home they ever had, determined to show their parents Greens frog. So they walked, and bounced in a few cases, their way to home.

When they eventually made it home they burst into the house via the front window–they didn’t like using the front door. It took some awkward maneuvering but eventually they got him in Sir Hops-a-lot and all. They ran further into the house where they found no adults in the living room. So the colours ran into the kitchen where there also was no parent to be found.

“Are we sure either of them are home yet?”

“Dad said that he would be home anytime between 4 and 4:30 and it's…um” Blue squinted at the time on the oven, “4:33…4:34?”

“Are you blind Blue?? It says 4:36.” came Vio’s response.

Green started to wander out of the kitchen, his frog now no longer wriggling in his hands. But Sir Hops-a-lot still ribbetted occasionally at the movement (Which felt weird to him seeing as his frog was a lot bigger than the other frogs he’s held).

His brothers trailed behind him, arguing about whether or not Blue needed glasses. Green led the way over to their parents room hoping to find one of them napping in there.

Green’s hoping actually worked and there laying sprawled across the bed fast asleep was Papa.

“Papa! Papa! Look at what I have!!” Green ran up and jumped onto his bed, shoving Sir Hops-a-lot towards the sleeping man's face.

Red ran up, jumped in the bed, and started to shake Sky around (well the best a nine year old can do to an adult). Sky slowly came to awareness, groaning and trying to push Red’s hands away.

“No no no no wake up Mr. Dad we gotta show you Sir Hops-a-lot!” Red shook Sky harder until the man cracked his eyes open. Sky’s eyes roamed around through half lidded eyes taking in the whole room. Red was up in his face, hands on his shoulders, and behind Red was Green with something in his hands. Just past Green, standing in the doorway were the last two Colours.

“Did all of you just get home?” Sky dragged out through a yawn, hands reaching up to rub the sleep from his eyes.

Green took his chance and pounced onto Sky’s lap, slipping as he did, resulting in the frog being freed from Green's hands. Sir Hops-a-lot slid from Green’s hands and smacked Sky in the face.

“Don’t move Mr. Dad!” Red moved his hands to grab the frog, the frog jumped from Sky’s face, Red hitting him instead.

Now wide awake, Sky could hear the ribbeting coming from somewhere behind him. Hitting Sky in the face didn’t stop Red or Green from their chance. The two boys scrambled after the frog that was apparently freed onto Sky’s bed.

“Shut the door! Shut the door!” Green screamed

One of the last two colours slammed the door shut. Sky didn’t know which since he now had Green and Red on top of him trying to grab the frog.

Sir Hops-a-lot jumped from the bed and onto the nightstand on the left side of the bed. Green launched himself at Sir Hops-a-lot, knocking a few things over, including a picture frame and the floor lamp. Green went crashing to the floor as the frog hoped away.

Red launched himself after the frog at the same time Blue raced from the door to grab Sir Hops-a-lot from where he sat perched on the bookshelf. The two boys crashed into each other and knocked into the bookshelf, causing everything on them to tumble down.

The frog jumped from the bookshelf to back on Sky’s bed and onto the shocked man's lap. Sky sat there for a moment taking in everything that just happened to his boys and to his room. After a few seconds he snapped his arms out and grabbed Sir Hops-a-lot.

Sky breathed in deeply before slipping his legs over the side of his bed to take a good long look at his boys. Green was laying face down on the floor next to the lamp post. The lightbulb miraculously was not broken, meaning the only glass he had to worry about was from the broken picture frame…and the small piece in Green's elbow.

Red and Blue sat in a pile at the base of the bookshelf slowly untangling themselves. Vio laid at the base of the door covering up the crack at the bottom. After taking in everything Sky looked down at the big frog in his hands wondering how on earth Green managed to keep it in his small hands for so long.

“May I know why I woke up to a frog in my face?”

“We didn’t mean for a frog to be in your face!” The colours all shouted at varying speeds.

Vio got up and put out his hands for the frog, and Sky handed it to him so he could properly check up on his other boys.

Sky slid off the bed and knelt down by Green to see if there was any more glass beside the boy. After looking he found that the only piece of glass by Green was the piece in his kid's elbow. Sky reached over and picked Green up by the armpits and pulled the boy into his lap.

Red and Blue had managed to untangle themselves, Red going to stand by Vio and poke at the frog. While Blue came over to take a closer look at Green. Green had a look on his face like he couldn’t decide on what to feel. On one hand, Sir Hops-a-lot was no longer hopping all around a room that could bring harm to him, but on the other hand his face and arms hurt. Especially his elbow.

After convincing the boys it would be okay for them to leave Sir Hops-a-lot in the bathtub, with water in it and a few plastic plates floating in to give the frog a place to chill, Sky shut the bathroom door and guided all of the colours over to the Lon’s house to see if Wars was home.

Sky hoped that if Wars was home it could save them a trip to the doctors if the boy needed stitches. Luckily after knocking on the door, Warriors was in fact, home. After exchanging some pleasantries and a rather bad explanation-with some interruptions from his boys-Wars ushered them into the house and onto the sofa. Warriors grabbed out his first-aid kit and took a look at Green's elbow.

“Well he won’t need stitches but I do need to remove the shard of glass.”

Red and Vio jumped over, both asking (slightly demanding in Vio’s case) to be able to watch closer. Blue held Green's hand and shifted closer to his brother. Green tried to bury himself deeper into Sky’s torso and held Blue's hand a little tighter.

“It’ll be okay Green, you’ll feel better once Wars removes the glass. We can go get a treat after if you want?” Sky rubbed Green's back trying to make the boy a little more comfortable.

Wars grabbed a pair of tweezers and pulled the glass out of Green's arm without warning. Green yelped, gripping Blue’s hand tighter and smushing his face into Sky’s chest attempting to disappear. Warriors had to hold Green's arm in place to properly clean the cut and bandage it up.

“Green sweetie, do you want to pick out your bandaid?” Wars pulled out numerous bandaids with different designs or a solid bright colour.

Red grabbed one with a bunch of frogs “This one! Green would like this one!” Vio nodded in agreement.

Warriors put the other bandaids away, took the one Red picked out, and put the frog bandaid onto Green's cut. After he gave it the all clear, Sky and his boys thanked Wars and the group headed out. Green held in Sky's arms, Blue still holding onto Green's hand with Red and Vio walking in front.

“Do you want a sweet Green? Or do you want to go home and play with Sir Hops-a-lot or take a nap?”

“I wanna go home” Green sniffed out, his voice muffled by Sky's sweater.

“Okay we can do that, we’ll make you something warm to drink-or hold-and just sit on the couch for a bit.”

When they got back to the house Sky had Red and Vio go check up on Sir Hops-a-lot while he set Green down on the sofa with Blue. Sky went to the kitchen to fill up the kettle and warm up the water. He looked for where they put the hot chocolate mixes while the water boiled.

Green and Vio like peppermint, Blue likes orange hot chocolate (Sky and Sun were 50% sure that he was just messing with them), and Red likes the darkest hot chocolate mix they can find.

Sky eventually locates the hot chocolate grabbing four mixes and heading out of the pantry and into the kitchen where the kettle was still on the stove.

He never turned on the stove. Sighing, Sky turned on the stove, set the mixes on the counter and grabbed out four mugs, two in each hand. Sky walked out of the kitchen and to the living room to check up on his boys. Red and Vio were now sitting on the couch chatting to their brothers. Vio had a book about frogs in his hands and they were all looking through it trying to figure out what kind of frog Sir Hops-a-lot is.

Green looked less sad, tears no longer sliding down his face, and a small smile sat upon his face. Sky walked back into the kitchen knowing that his boys were all in good hands. When he made it to the kitchen the kettle was starting to squeal. He turned off the stove, picked up the kettle and started to pour the hot water into each mug.

Once all the water was poured Sky put the mixes into the right mugs (blue for Blue, red for Red and so forth). He stirred each cup, rinsing the spoon off in between Vio’s, Red’s, and Blue’s mugs.

Sky took the four mugs carefully in his hands and carried them out to the boys in the living room. He set the mugs on the coffee table and joined the colours on the couch. His boys thanked him before grabbing their mugs.

Vio immediately took a sip, the look he made after showed he seemed to regret doing that. Green just held it after Blue had given it to him. Blue and Red blew on theirs and sipped slowly.

After a while the Colours migrated into leaning on (or just sitting on) Sky, while a nature documentary played quietly on the T.V. Green was asleep, slumped into Sky’s chest being held on the couch by Sky’s arms alone, Blue was flopped onto Sky and had his arm draped across Green and a foot behind Vio’s head. Vio was sitting between Sky’s knees and the couch while Red laid at the end, looking like he was trying to do his best to become a part of Sky’s legs and Vio’s arm.

When Sun came home she found her husband and kids asleep on the couch, a documentary playing in the background and mugs sitting on the table. Red looked up when he saw it was Sun that came home. He patted the couch and made grabbing motions at Sun. She took that as a sign that Red wanted her to join, so she picked him up and sat down.

Sun took some time to get comfortable, making sure she didn’t wake up anyone else. Once she was comfortable, her legs on top of Sky’s-making even more of a cocoon for Vio-Red settled himself onto Sun and shut his eyes. After a few minutes everyone in the house was asleep, even Sir Hops-a-lot.

Only because the frog was not in the house. Sir Hops-a-lot managed to slip under the bathroom door and hopped out of the house when Sun opened the door. The frog was free and would stay like that until Wind and Spirit found him an hour later.

They named it Frog and begged their Grandmother to let them keep it. She caved on the condition that the twins take care of it, not her.
