Work Text:
Everyone knew Leo loved show tunes. He was a sucker for any kind of musical.
Donnie wasn't surprised when he'd occasionally hear the song “Wait for it” coming from Leo's room late at night. He was up late normally so it didn't bother him much.
However one night when Donatello decides that maybe he does need sleep, he goes to ask Leo to turn it down a bit.
The purple clad turtle knocked on the wall. No response. Maybe Leo had fallen back asleep? He doubted it though, considering how loud the song was.
With a look of confusion, Donnie pushes past the blue curtain only to stop in his tracks.
The song was still playing, but Leo was standing at a board Donnie swears wasn't there as of a few months ago.
They had a mission coming up— the first one since the krang invasion—and Leo never seemed to plan his missions.
There were plans upon plans, Leo standing in front of it holding an energy drink can and fresh bandages over his wrists.
Wait— fresh bandages.
“Nardo.” Donnie says once, stepping in and immediately grabbing Leo's wrist. The blue turtle jumps and looks at Don with wide, bloodshot, eyes.
“Tello.” Leonardo says, unsure what to do. Donnie doesn't respond, only starts unwrapping the bandages. Leo tries to pull away, but Donatello doesn't let him.
“These are fresh. And self inflicted.” Donnie’s clinical tone makes Leo wince. He knew what he had done, but never expected to be caught.
“Dee, I'm fine. Let go.” Leo says. Donnie looks up at him, having his battle shell handle rebandaging Leo.
“You're not okay.” He says simply. With one hand Donnie takes the energy drink from Leo's hand and puts it on a dresser.
“What's going on in your head, Lee?” The soft shell asks. Leo looks away. Donnie orders the music to pause. He looks at Leo's board, then back at his twin.
“You're planning…at two am with one of the most emotion wrenching songs from Hamilton —aside from Stay alive reprise— playing.” Donnie observes. Leo continues to avoid his twin's gaze.
“You're thinking about the invasion.” Donnie says, not sure how or why he knew, just that he did. Leo practically flinches.
“Can you talk, or do I need to get a notebook?” Donnie changes his earlier question. Donatello occasionally went nonverbal when overwhelmed, and he wasn't sure if his twin was experiencing something similar.
“Can, don't wanna.” Leo mutters. Donnie nods.
“We don't have to now, we will later.” Donnie says, then he sighs
“Sigh…would you like to watch a movie in my room with me to take your mind off it?” He asks. He normally didn't share his space a lot. But Leonardo seemed to need it as he nodded.
“Come on then.” Donatello mutters and leads Leo out of his room and into the purple one's.
Donnie gestures to his bed for Leo to sit down and he puts on a totally legal and not at all pirated version of Six the musical. It wasn't all that accurate, but Donnie would make an exception for his dum dum twin.
“Thanks, Dee.” Leo mutters as Donnie settles next to him. Donnie nods once, wrapping an arm around Leo's shoulder.
“All of us are in perfect condition. You and I are the first to be notified if that changes.” Donatello tells him, realizing his subtle way of caring might benefit his twin at the moment.
Leonardo nods but turns his head away again, Donnie can tell he's holding back tears.
“None of us blame you, Leo. It was an honest mistake.” He continues, not caring if his twin admits it or not. Donnie knows Leo is bottling his feelings up.
“Dee-” Leon chokes, Donnie chooses to ignore the silent plea for him to shut up.
“We all still see you as a competent leader. You're still a teen, Leo, as are all of us. Mistakes allow us to grow, staying up late and the other activities you've been doing won't.”
They're not paying attention to the movie anymore. Leo's crying quietly, Donnie continues to speak the truth.
And if Mikey and Raph find them tangled up asleep in the morning? We'll no one needs to know.
