The Price of Truth

Summary:

Working behind Madam Christmas's bar teaches you one thing: people will tell you practically anything if you listen long enough.

Unfortunately, listening isn't quite enough anymore.

Determined to become a journalist, you begin investigating the aftermath of the Ishvalan War, visiting the settlements outside Central and documenting the lives of people Amestris would rather forget. Your first published article earns you a place at the newspaper, a very proud collection of friends, and one spectacular argument with your overprotective brother, Roy Mustang.

Then there's Scar.

A wanted killer. An Ishvalan survivor. The man your journalist friend is determined to find...and the man you recognize leaving one of the very settlements you've promised to protect.

Keeping quiet seemed like the right decision at the time.

Now, with Hughes's murder still unsolved and the military tightening its grip on Central, you're beginning to realize just how complicated telling the truth can get.

**Scar x Female Reader. An extremely slow burn featuring journalism, found family, complicated loyalties and a reader who really should learn when to mind her own business.**

Notes:

GAAAHHH. Haven't written anything since my days on wattpad ew. First time writing as a legal adult please be kind to me. English is not my first language and this will be an extremly slow burn so I hope you are in for the ride! Enoy!!

Chapter Text

Chapter 1 - Fullmetal Alchemist

"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost."

„Damn it!“ i lunged forward in hopes of saving a freshly made martini from its doom. Too little, too late. No matter, this was a common occurance in a bar such as this one. „You might be the clumsiest girl I've ever offered a job“ Madam Christmas chuckled at my misfortune and offered me a hand with the clean up. „Shame about the martini, would have been your best one yet“ she smiled passing me a rag. „I know I know, we should really repare these dingy old floor boards“ I grumbled back. Another familiar voice pitched in „Or maybe you could watch where you're going“ A raven haired prick in uniform waltzed to the bar stools and made himself comfortable. „Oh butt out Roy, I dont recall asking your opinion“ I shot back „Im sure you know someone who could fix them with a wave of the hand, if you are too lazy to fix them yourself colonel.“ He chuckled at that. „Long time no see Y/N“ I smiled warmly and passed him a glass „Long time no see Roy“
Roy seldom droped by, he clearly needed madam Christmas for something, undenyably i was always happy to see him, meant I got to clock out early. Much to Roy's dismay. Madam Christmas waved me off, i hung up my apron and said my goodbyes to the costumers and called a cab on the bars phone. It was a cold windy evening, couldnt wait to get home and lay down in my warm cozy bed. I sat down at a bench across from the bar and lit up a cigarette to kill some time. My peace wouldnt last long for as soon as I sat down I felt the ground beneath me shake, was it some sort of earthquaqe or just alchemist shenanigans?? Great some rain too, just what I was missing. I poked my head out into a narrow allyway to check the situation. ISAAC MCDOUGAL!?!? Isn't he like a fugitive or something?! What the hell is he doing in central? AND WHAT THE HELL IS ROY DOING IN A BAR?! I rushed back in trowing the doors open. „Mustang!“ I called for him as I entered. „Dont worry, he's dealing with it“ Madam Christmas spoke calming me down. „He rushed out a few minutes ago, I sent him trough the back door“ I nodded gratefully and went back out despite madam Christmases protests. „It isnt safe darling, and Im ceritan your cab wont be ariving any time soon..“ She beckoned me to stay. „Sorry madam, I've got someone waiting for me at home“ I said steping back out into the pouring rain. Deciding I would walk. Partly because i really wanted to get back home, partly because I was curious to see how things play out.
I walked around, my chlotes soaked and my expression miserable, maybe I should have just stayed at the bar. I saw a buch of blue shapes a few meters ahead. The weather clouding my vision. Luckly i was fairly confident that the shapes however unclear they were, were the militaray. I decidedly pushed forward to see the action with my own eyes. A kid a few years younger than myself was doing some hella impressive alchemy. Since when does the military take on kids? Pretty disturbing if you ask me. I didnt want to get too involved so I searched for familiar faces among the blue crowd. I was spotted before I could spot them. „What the hell do you think you are doing here!!“ Mustang scolded me „You're gonna get yourself killed! Didn't you go home already?!“ I waved him off „Cab didn't show, decided I'd rather walk than wait for another one“ I responded calmly pissing him off. „I came to see Riza anyway, in this weather I feel much safer with her than I do you.“ I stuck my tounge out at him mocking him. „Sorry Sir, we both know you are useless on rainy days“ Riza said passing him a dry ignition glove. He thanked Riza and rolled his eyes at me. „Just stay back Y/N I'll give you a ride home when we take care of this guy.

„WATCH OUT HE'S GETTING AWAY!!“ I yelled from a safe distance. The blonde boy and the suit of armour corner him, he's telling them about some sort of conspiracy??? Before he could finish he gets absolutely demolished by King Bradely himself. How big of a deal was this guy? Guess thats settled. Roy escorted me and the boys who I soon found out were called Edward and Alphonse back to central. Edward and Roy were chatting it up about this Mcdougal guy so I took the chance to talk to the armoured one. „Hi, Im Y/N nice to meet you! You must be Alphonse right?“ I introduced myself politely. „Hi, yes I am. Nice meeting you too, I saw you while we were out fighting mr Mcdougal, you dont seem to be part of the military, are you okay?“ Wow, not the voice I was expecting, he must be young too. He spoke softly and kindly clearly worried about my wellbeing. „Oh don't worry about me pal, it's importan you and your brother got out unschaved, I was in good hands thanks to you guys.“ I replied expresing my graditute for their services. During Roy's and Ed's conversation I overheard they had no place to stay so I offered up my place. Fortunately for me Maes Huges would not allow such things, for three of us to be cramped up in a tiny apartment. It was just unseemly. He insisted on housing them at his place with his wife Gracia and little Elicia. „I insist, it would be an hounour to have you, my wife makes a mean stake! Y/N you are welecome to stay over as well, Im sure Elicia would love to see you!“ I smiled at the offer „Thank you Liutenant Hughes but I will have to pass on this offer tonight. I will make sure to pay you a visit soon though, don't worry. Please say hello to Gracia and Elicia for me“ He patted my head and nodded „Suit yourself kid, Elrics, follow me!“
I waved at the young alchemists who followed Huges to his car and said my goodbyes to Riza. Waiting for Roy in the hall. „You stress me out too much you know that“ I turned around to see Roy slowly aproacing me. „I know, I know, sorry bout that, I really was planing on going home right after work, I swear.“ I said as he walked me to the car. „Stay out of trouble, your workplace is trouble enaugh.“ He commanded as he started up the engine. „You're not my dad Roy, make peace with it. I will work with as many handsome men I like“ I teased him. „If they keep you out of trouble fine by me“ He sighed. Roy and I grew up together. Both under madam Christmases wing, so he was pretty much like a big brother to me. He raised me for a big part of my childhood and now that I'm older he treats me as if I'm still the little girl he tought how to chatch. Some would say I have great conections, i could easily work in the military if I liked, but I was never a fan of dawning the blue, so I stayed back and decided to work the bar with madam Christmas. But having firends in the military truly does come in handy. Who knows I might need em someday. „Lock your doors, and STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!“ Roy spoke sternly as i got out of the car. Home sweet home. „Yeah, yeah, whatever“ I rolled my eyes, a habit I picked up form him „Thanks for the lift. Goodnight Roy“ I hugged him and walked up to my fifth floor apartment. „Im home!“ I signaled as two kitties gathered at my feet. „Hi babies, missed me much?“ The sounds of purrs filled my hallway I poured them a glass full of milk and refilled their bowls with kibble. „Ready for bed?“ I spoke to the cats as I shed my chlotes and swaped them for comfy pjs.
„Goodnight sweethearts.“ And with that my day came to a close.
