Chapter 1: Unfortunate Encounters

Chapter Text

City life is hard. City life, as a broke student, in one of the most populated (and high costing) cities in the world would surely be even worse, financially, mentally and physically. As an exchange student, Soobin just wanted to finish his college years as soon as possible with the new friends he made who came from the same plane from Korea to America; Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Kai, and Taehyun. And at first glance it does seem like a good plan. It suits the mental longing of him for two things:

• Food

• and home. Like, dark-room-with-gaming-setups-ready-home.

Maybe he underestimated the plan, after briefly glancing at it for 3 seconds after the first week of introduction. Apparently the land of the free doesn't welcome intelligence, since Flash was already staring daggers anytime their arms 'accidentally' brush (usually causing Soobin to be catapulted to the floor and a snicker from the so-called 'senior') or whenever he spotted him in the fork between the hallways heading to the library.

"Maybe Americans just hate being smart..." The curious statement hangs in a vacant dorm. Yeonjun, always with the social energy he has, is invited to parties 24/7. Wait, maybe 25/8, he hadn't even seen him in class today. Him and Yeonjun are roommates, but the contrasting nature of both genuinely baffles some people to the bottom of their brains.

Soobin had thought to spend his lonely nights in his other friends' rooms, but looking back, it was better that he didn't. Kai probably had invited his friend and Beomgyu over for a League of Legends battle (that was what happened the last time he knocked and peeked in, earning a few irritated screams that pierced through the walls). What about Taehyun, you ask? The last time Soobin checked up on him, he almost thought there was no one in the room due to the ocean of books on the floor, and it was the perfect time that he had a reading slump, so gently he closed the door and slunked back to his room.

"No one to talk to, and nothing to do." He hopped onto his bed, the springs underneath working overtime to support his weight. He was the first to arrive to the room, so he had dibs over which bed he chose, and it was the one next to the window. The view outside looks like a live painting, the cars from an above view looking like small lights flashing and trying to overlap each otherp, whilst the skyscrapers are racing to see who can reach the sky first in the dead of night.

Crickets are a rarity in the sea of lights here, and Soobin longed to hear at least one, straining its nonexistent throat to spread a calming sound. Well, he, alone thought that it was a calming sound. None other than the blaring sirens, those insects were the lone companion of his daily nights here.

A spider was on the sill of his window. He didn't pay much attention to it, until it registered. There's a SPIDER.

"AH- NO NO NOOO I CLEANED MY ROOM ALREADY NO! SHUCKS!" The exasperation in his voice for the spider to get away is basically a plea for help...

But he didn't see the other spider, creeping up, right next to him. The one with black as its shell and red stripes clawing in it.
