Work Text:

It’s one of those rare days when Eugene and Kanzaki are studying alone. Tamon has some music that he’s working on, and Mogari had decided to join him on it. After they’d helped at the cultural festival, he took quite the shining to music.

Eugene’s house is quiet around them, the study large and spacious, with his grandmother somewhere downstairs. Kanzaki’s only been here once more, because most of the time, they like to converge at his house rather than anyone else’s. Eugene had been rather excited to invite him over after school.

Though, he can’t stop himself from being distracted as he tries to study. Eugene keeps glancing up at Kanzaki, gazing at his face, before his eyes drop back down to his notes.

Kanzaki doesn’t even have to say anything, shifting in his spot at the table, before Eugene is quietly asking: “Do they hurt?”

For a moment, Kanzaki freezes, processing the question. Then his shoulders relax, and his hands still where they’re at.

Quietly, he answers, “Sometimes.”

Silence falls between them, as Eugene had stopped his movements, as well. Kanzaki stares at the empty spaces of his homework, knowing that Eugene is staring at the scars over his eyes—and he startles when Eugene’s hand comes into his peripheral view.

Fingers brush against Kanzaki’s left eye scar, right at the bottom, just below his eye. His eyes dart over towards Eugene, wide and slightly shaking, watching the way Eugene’s face displays his emotions. Sadness, though not pity—it’s more like Eugene is… upset for him.

“I’m sorry, Zaki.”

He goes to move away, and Kanzaki’s hand moves of its own accord. He grabs Eugene’s hand and presses it right to his cheek, Eugene’s fingers sliding right against his scar as he does. Eugene’s eyes go wide as well, the two of them staring each other down before Eugene’s expression softens, and he proffers Kanzaki a smile that makes his heart skip a beat.
