Work Text:
Shoto looked stunning in the dull glow of the candlelight, or at least Izuku though so. Then again, Shoto always had that kind of, well, feeling about them.
The type of feeling and atmosphere that made Izuku feel safe;
That, to Izuku, always made him more attractive.
And who could blame Izuku, Shoto was always thoughtful and sweet and kind and Izuku knew that they wouldn’t turn on him. Would never turn on him.
Todoroki turned, sorry, Shoto; Izuku was still trying to get into the habit of calling him by his first name, even in his own head.
Anyway, Shoto turned, looking around Izuku’s house. He - Izuku - had tried to make the place romantic, hence the candlelight, but he still felt nervous.
Shoto looked back at Izuku, asking silent permission to look around the house, and who was Izuku to refuse?
He nodded and Shoto turned towards Izuku’s room, walking briskly up the steps as Izuku worked to clean up the dinner. Shoto looked back once more, and, upon receiving no objection, entered.
The door closed behind the red and white haired boy and Izuku swallowed, hard.
______________
Shoto blushed, his face essentially a tomato (strawberries were Izuku’s thing) as soon as he had entered his boyfriend’s room.
Wow that felt good to say, or think, Shoto supposes.
Anyway, Shoto distracted himself (he refused the image of Izuku’s face, illuminated by the candle’s glow) by looking around the room. He appraised the walls covered from head to toe and even more in All Might merch.
Enough that it would make Endeavour vomit.
Though that wasn't a particularly high bar to clear, all things considered.
Shoto smiled to himself at the thought of his father seeing his boyfriend’s roomLogically he knew that if they had anything to say about it, Endeavour would never step near Shoto ever again but it was still an entertaining thought.
He made a mental note to purchase more merch for Izuku. All Might, maybe Mirko. Possibly some merch of the LOV that some crazy ‘fans’ had made. Just to rub it in further.
Using his dad’s credit card of course, was there even another option?
He glanced over to the displayed figurines, almost breaking out into laughter then and there when he caught sight of the dated Eraserhead poster, from before they had even stepped foot into UA. Their teacher’s reaction would be something Shouto would pay to see.
He let his eyes pass over multiple objects, his gaze gliding past all the items. More posters and merch, the table with an All-Might desk lamp on it, various different marbles of shapes and sizes that varied.
A glint of gold in the shape of a circle.
It was almost comedic, or Shoto assumed it would be, when he caught sight of it and had to do a double-take.
He felt like a cartoon character with the amount of confusion he felt. It was small, the object, but it was displayed proudly. Unashamedly taking up precious space on Izuku’s desk. Did it really deserve such a high position in Izuku’s space?
Memories rose, unbidden, from the depths of Shoto’s mind. It was a small coin, one with Shoto’s face on it, printed as a joke when they tested out a coin minter. Shoto had given it to Izuku, jokingly telling them not to spend his love too quickly.
The coin was worthless, but apparently (to Izuku at least), it was invaluable.
Or maybe Shoto was making something out of nothing, pretending an amazing, beautiful meaning was there when it really wasn’t.
But his traitorous heart still beat faster and he took a trembling breath.
The door creaked open, and Shoto was face to face with the person who had put him into this dilemma.
All he could do was gesture to the displayed coin harshly, but not threateningly. He tilted his head in an unspoken question.
Izuku only laughed. But how could he?
“It’s customary to display treasured things, Shoto,” he said teasingly, as if he wasn’t making Shoto’s heart run into overdrive. As if his casual displays of care didn’t mean that much in the grand scheme of things.
“It’s just a worthless coin with my face printed on it! It’s not that valuable.”
Izuku smiled, “But you gave it to me, and that’s enough value for me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all.”
He said that last sentence in a singsong and Shoto finally felt himself calm down. He was probably resembling the ripest tomato with his face, but he couldn’t bring himself to care.
“It was a joke gift,” he said helplessly. Fruitlessly.
Izuku’s eyes lit up like gold. “It’s your love.”
Then the two burst into laughter, Shoto’s almost hysterical. He was calm, he was collected. Or usually that was the case, but it wasn’t the gift that had his heart pounding out of his chest, it was the fact that Izuku had kept it.
He hadn’t tossed it away like the joke it was, only used once before it was forgotten. No, he displayed it.
It was beside his merch for goodness sake. It wasn’t next to his school papers or his homework, it had taken love and care to frame it and hang it next to the posters.
He didn’t know why Izuku cared so much about that stupid coin, he didn’t know why he himself cared about that stupid coin.
So instead of trying to decipher his emotions, he had never been good at that anyway, he instead lay down next to the still laughing Izuku.
“Why are we laughing?”
“I honestly have no idea,”
They continued to laugh until tears blurred their vision and their faces were numb anyway.
Shoto lay next to his boyfriend and all was right with the world.
At some point they got up and rolled into the bed, cuddling next to each other, weary from the day’s events.
“You kept the joke coin.”
“Of course I did.”
And Shoto smiled as he slowly drifted off to sleep, memories of laughter echoing in his dreams.
