You Saved the Day Again, Superman!

Summary:

Superman saves Woody and Buzz from the clutches of Sid.

Work Text:

The sunlight scorches Woody’s forehead as he’s forced to stare at Sid’s braces through the magnifying glass. He can’t scream, though he wants to.

Suddenly, the sun is blocked by Superman, hovering outside the window in his suit and red cape.

Woody’s forehead sizzles, though he’s no longer being actively burned.

Sid turns at the shadow. “Huh… Superman?!”

“I’ve heard a little boy named Andy crying for his Buzz Lightyear and cowboy figures. Those wouldn’t be his, would they, son?”

“No. I won them out of the crane game at Pizza Planet.” Sid says. “I snagged double prizes with the same quarter. They’re mine, not that dorky kid next door’s.

“They have his name on their boots.” Superman says, eyes scanning Wood’s sprawled form on the green carpet in Sid’s room.

“How’d they get in the crane game then?” Sid demands. “I won them fair and square!”

Superman flies through the window, scooping Woody and Buzz into his arms. He stares at Sid’s bed, like he can see all the mangled monsters underneath. “You shouldn’t be hurting them, son.”

“They’re just toys.” Sid scoffs. “I’m not hurting anything.”

“Yes you are,” Woody snaps from the safety of Superman’s arms. Sid gapes, but Superman looks completely unsurprised. He’s probably heard toys talking his whole life with his superpowers.

“You’re hurting your sister, too, when you steal her toys.” Superman says, clearly piecing together the broken doll parts around the room. “You should stop.”

Sid’s shoulder slump. “I was just having fun.”

“We weren’t.” Buzz snaps. “You were torturing us.”

Sid gasps as the horrible, mutated toys creep out from under the bed. The baby head with the spider body clicks its pincers menacingly.

Woody’s terrified of them, but he can’t find it in himself to feel bad for Sid. Instead, his heart soars as Superman flies them next door to Andy’s house.

“I found your toys, Andy.”

Woody briefly wishes he could come alive for Andy too, but he goes limp against Superman’s chest, as does Buzz.

“Woody! Buzz!” Andy cheers, taking them and hugging them both. “Wow, thanks, Superman! Where were they?”

“Your neighbor Sid found them at Pizza Planet.”

Andy gawps. “Wow, I’m glad he didn’t wreck them. Hannah says he wrecks her toys all the time.”

“He won’t anymore.” Superman promises.

Andy laughs and waves them through the air. “Want to play? You can be Buzz, because you can fly and shoot lasers too.”

Woody’s pretty sure Superman has far more powers than that.

“I’d love to.” Superman smiles, holding Buzz carefully and hovering off the floor, holding Buzz up.

In this game, Mr. Potato head is the victim instead of the villain, pulled to pieces like Sid’s toys. Andy has Woody fight the evil snake that was eating him, and Woody doesn’t even mind when Andy has Buzz save Woody from being squeezed by the snake.

Together, they stop the snake (Superman insists they don’t kill it, putting it in Molly’s crib as the zoo) and put Potato Head back together. Andy makes Woody high-five Buzz.

“Come on, Partner!” Andy’s apparently decided Woody and Buzz are friends now, instead of rivals. “Let’s go to infinity and beyond!”

Andy races outside, sliding Woody down the railing as Superman hovers after him, and Woody still feels like he’s flying.
