Work Text:
Cassandra walked into the palace stables one evening to find Eugene and Rapunzel saddling up Maximus.
“Hey. Where are you guys off to at this time?” She asked.
“Me and Eugene were going to go to the Snuggly Duckling for a drink. You’re welcome to come too.” Rapunzel smiled at Cass.
“Thanks, but no thanks. You know I don’t drink.” Cass said shortly.
“I can’t believe we’ve been friends for three years now and I didn’t know that about you.” Rapunzel said thoughtfully.
Eugene laughed.
“Cass, I would pay to see you drunk. It’d be the highlight of my week.” He snorted.
“Ha ha. Not going to happen, Fitzherbert.” Cass snapped back.
“You don’t know, Cass. You might enjoy it.” Rapunzel said, pulling Max’s bridle on.
“Yeah, no.”
Cass rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. She was never going to get drunk. She’d never touched alcohol in her life, and wasn’t going to start now.
“Honestly, Cass, what are you so scared of? Worried that I might just be a better drinker than you?” Eugene laughed.
Cass glared at him. Maybe just one drink to prove Eugene wrong.
“Fine. One drink. But I can drink, if I want to.” She said, glowering at him.
Rapunzel looked between her friends.
“If you’re sure, Cass. Just… Gothel never could handle drinking. She’d get drunk after a bottle of red wine. I’m not sure if something like that’s passed down, but if it is…” She trailed off, unsure how best to put her words.
“If it is than tonight is going to be even funnier.” Eugene said firmly.
“I’m not Mama, I won’t get drunk from one single drink.” Cass said firmly. “Besides, I have work tommorow, and there’s no way I’m showing up hungover.”
She rolled her eyes and stomped off to saddle up her horse, Fidella. Eugene watched her go before turning to Rapunzel.
“Five coins she gets more drunk than Gothel would.” He murmured to Rapunzel.
Rapunzel stared at Cass for a moment.
“Deal.” She murmured back.
Eugene pulled himself onto Max, and Rapunzel clambered on after him. At that moment, Cass rode out of Fidella’s stable.
“Ready?” She demanded.
Eugene and Rapunzel smiled at each other, and nodded.
The ride to the Snuggly Duckling was quick, and the group arrived within half an hour. Leaving their horses outside, they dismounted and went inside the tavern. The three of them took a table in the corner.
“So, Cass… me and Eugene are going to have a few beers. What do you want to drink?” Rapunzel asked, standing up, ready to go place her order.
“Oh, strongest thing here, please.” Cass said.
Rapunzel blinked in surprise. Could Cass manage it?
“If you’re sure, Cass.” She said.
Rapunzel went up to the bar, where Atilla was serving.
“Mine and Eugene’s usual, please. And Cass wants a tankard of your strongest ale.”
Atilla went silent, just as surprised as Rapunzel. Eventually, he managed to stutter out one sentance.
“Cassandra wants ale?”
Rapunzel nodded, and Atilla filled up three large tankards and placed them on a tray on the bar. Rapunzel picked up the tray and wove her way back through the throng of people to her table.
Setting the tray down, she passed the drinks out.
“Now, Cass, the best thing to do is to drink it slowly.” Eugene said, picking up his own tankard.
He looked over to Cass, who was already downing hers. For a moment, he just stared. Cass still seemed normal, well, as normal as the venemous cobra lady could be. She placed her tankard back down on the table - it was already empty. Impressive. Eugene had friends who couldn’t drink that fast.
Cass wiped her mouth with her sleeve. It was then Eugene noticed the flush to her cheeks. Against her white skin, it looked surprisingly sharp.
“Told you I can handle it.” She slurred.
Rapunzel snorted. It didn’t seem like it.
Cass reached forwards, steadying herself against Rapunzel’s shoulder.
“Hey, Raps, have I ever told you how beautiful you look?” She slurred.
Rapunzel blushed. She had known for over a year about Cass’s crush on her, but she only liked men - well, only liked Eugene - in that way, and Cass had never acted on her feelings before.
“Cass, I think you’re drunk.” Rapunzel said carefully.
Cass burst out laughing.
“Not drunk. That’s a funny word. Drunk. It has a funny sound to it. Drunk. Drink. Drunk.”
She lent her head on Rapunzel’s shoulder, looked up, and kissed her best friend on the lips. Rapunzel and Eugene stared at her.
“We are never getting Cass drunk again.” Rapunzel said firmly to Eugene, who was doubled over with laughter.
Cass grinned lopsidedly at the two of them.
“You’re very beautiful, Raps. I want you.”
Eugene started laughing even harder while Rapunzel backed away from Cass.
“Please, stop.” Rapunzel begged, her cheeks turning red with embarrasment. Cass knew she didn’t share those feelings.
“Lets get in bed, Raps.” Cass slurred. She stood up… and fell to the floor in a faint.
Eugene finally managed to catch his breath.
“Cassandra is never going to forgive us for tonight once she is finally sober.” He said, nudging her fainted form with his shoe.
“I’m never going to forgive you for tonight.” Rapunzel muttered. She smiled at Eugene. “But I think we should go back to the palace. Cass is going to have a thumping headache when she wakes up, and I don’t fancy being around for that.”
