So Proudly We Hail, Alpha Flight!

Summary:

March, 1942. Seven Army nurses have just been evacuated to Australia after their service on Corregidor. One of them, the head nurse, Lt. Heather McNeil, although not wounded, is in a catatonic state. As the story unfolds, we will learn of how she came to be this way --and also, of the nurses' brave service. Heather leads the very different women — tough Lillian, down-to-earth Elizabeth, sweet Marrina, friendly Leta, and eager Kara— in their duties under unusual and difficult circumstances. But after they come home, they face new challenges in fitting into a wartime America.

Notes:

Being a long-time fan of both Alpha Flight and the movie, So Proudly We Hail!, I have long wanted to do a crossover between the two. It was great fun casting the women in Alpha Flight in the roles of the movie characters, and I was able to assign each one to to a movie character matching her personality traits. This is my first crossover, so if I make a few mistakes here and there, hope you'll excuse it. Well, anyway, read it and have fun!

PROLOGUE

As soon as they landed in Australia on that March day in 1942, the seven Army nurses –Lt. Heather McNeil and Lts. Beaubier, Smallwood, Twoyoungmen, Crowley, Killgrave, and Macaulay—received a heroic welcome.

“This is in recognition of the peril you endured while providing care to our wounded,” Major Cross greeted them as they disembarked from the plane which had brought them. “We’ll take you to a hotel in town where you can have a bath and a change of clothes.”

The six nurses who just deplaned were grateful. But then, everyone’s attention was diverted to the seventh nurse, who was being unloaded from the plane.

Lt. McNeil, the head nurse, was on a stretcher, in a catatonic state, scarcely conscious. Major Cross could hardly refrain from asking, “What happened? Has she been wounded?”

“Mais non, Major,” Lt. Beaubier replied. “But let us tell you all that has happened…..”
