Chapter Text
It had taken the combined efforts from Melissa and Aaron to convince their parents to allow him into public school. Melissa had argued that if they just let Aaron into the real world after military school, he’d be even worse off than if he went to public school. “Dad, mom. He’s controlling his eyes better than he used to. If he doesn’t make any friends- or doesn’t even talk to people he’ll just get angry and lose control!” Melissa had to make this argument over and over again. But eventually even their parents acquiesced to the logic. Privately Aaron had thanked Melissa dozens of times over. “You’re my baby brother Aaron. You deserve to actually have friends.”
“I have a friend! You know, the one from my game?” Aaron responded, not in anger but to show he was clearly someone who could handle this social interact.
Melissa just shook her head. “I know, but you also need friends who are in person. You’ll be fine Aaron.” She placed a hand on his shoulder. He had surpassed her in height but that meant very little. “Try and make friends. I worry about you. In a different way than mom and dad do.” She gestured downstairs. “Text me if you need me, I’m only two hours away after all.”
Aaron closed his eyes, remembering how hard he fought to go to public school. He got dressed in the dorky uniform that was provided for him, and even with that the sleeves were still too short on him. He’d been growing like weed. But this wasn’t the time to be worried about how he looked. He needed to get to class before he was late. So he started walking over to the school.
In a house not three miles down it was another person's first day of school.
“Aphmau it’s time to get up. It’s your first day of high school!”
Aphmau immediately snapped to attention at that. It was her first day of public school in ages. Sure, she’d be entering as a sophomore but still! She almost immediately got out of bed and rushed for her uniform. Sure it was looser than she’d like, ordering the smallest size didn’t do much when she was so much smaller than those who were presumably going to her school. Either way she grabbed her deodorant, slapped on a healthy layer and put on her uniform. She wrinkled her nose at the image. “It’s just so big…” the shirt went far behind where it was supposed to go, almost at her hips and the skirt was past her knees. “Maybe I’ll just hem the shirts when I get back home!” She nodded before grabbing lip gloss and putting on some mascara. She exited her room feeling as confident as she’d get on her first day of public school in years.
“Aphmau! I have breakfast ready! If you want to eat before school you’ll come down now!” Her mother called up, just moments before Aphmau stepped down.
“Mommmmmm I’m already down, you don’t have to yell at me.” She pouted before smiling. “But breakfast would be great. Thanks mom!” She grabbed the pancakes and ate with gusto before her mom warned her to slow down. After that she carefully ate, faster than normal but slow enough to not get scolded. She couldn’t help being excited! She spent so long convincing her mom to let her go to public school.
“Alright, let’s get going- vamaos.” Aphmau grabbed her bag with everything she had packed the day before and headed into their old car in the front seat. She wasn’t really supposed to be in the front seat with how short she was but she was old enough so it didn’t matter to her. Her mom also handed her the lunch because otherwise she would’ve totally forgotten. She pulled on her headphones and messaged her best friend, FC.
FC
<Hey FC! off to my first day of school!
> Good luck Shu! I’m off for my first day of public school as well. Don’t let anyone get you down.
<that’s awesome good luck FC same goes to you!
“Aphmau we’re here.” Sylvanna announces to her daughter who clearly had her head stuck in her phone. Aphmau started for a moment.
“Already?! Okay mom, thanks for driving me! I love you bye.” She leaned over and kissed her mom on the cheek before grabbing the handle and pushing.
Sylvanna sighed as she watched her daughter walk away. “Hopefully she isn’t too mad when she finds out the classes I signed her up for. She should know…. Just in case.” The older woman shook her head and began driving home before she had to leave for work. She needed another glass of coffee to get through this day.
Aphmau practically skipped up to the stairs of the school. “Selfie time! I have to remember the first day of school!” She giggled to herself and snapped a photo. Before she even got a chance to look at the photo however, she got hit by someone.
“Ow!” She glanced at the person who had run into her and then proceeded to look up much further than she had expected. The guy was huge by high school standards, or at least she thought, and seemed to be wearing the uniform as ill-fittingly as she was.
He muttered something under his breath and walked away from her, his large stride moving him away from her very quickly. “What a jerk! Doesn’t even apologize. Whatever, I’m not letting one person get in the way of my experience!” Aphmau continued walking along before getting to the front doors. Which were locked?! She blinked and looked around. Okay so no one else seemed unsure or uncomfortable like she did. So for some unknown reason this was supposed to be the case.
Someone laughed at her confusion. A girl with deep skin and brown box braids came up to her. “I’m assuming you’re a freshman?” She had a golden band around her arm and a warm expression. Aphmau instantly felt more relaxed around her.
“Not a freshman, but new to this school?” Aphmau tried to explain as if that would help out her situation. The other nodded at her explanation.
“I don’t know how your previous school did things, but ours tends to lock the doors the first day. Especially so we can escort the freshman to their home rooms. Which… you’ll probably need escorting as well?”
Aphmau sighed. “I didn’t go to a previous high school. I’ve been home-schooled since seventh grade. This is all pretty new to me.” The girl smiled a wide smile, showing rows of perfectly white teeth.
“Home school eh? Yeah I can imagine this is all very overwhelming. But home schooling does sound pretty fun, I have to be honest!” The presumably older girl looked around to see if anyone else needed any help.
“No… if anything it’s been super lonely. But I’m really glad you spoke to me! Would you like to be my-“
A voice interrupted her “Teony, we need you to get ready for your welcoming speech.”
The girl- Teony sighed. “Alright, Mr. Visher, I’ll be right over!” She smiled once more at Aphmau. “Sorry about that, I'm actually the student council president and I’ll be giving a speech for all the new students and freshmen. I guess I’ll see you then? Anyways see you around cutie!” She gave one last friendly look before heading inside. There was a side door she walked through with the teacher, probably meant only for the teachers.
Aphmau blinked. “Cutie?!” She blushed, “she’s so confident. And I thought I was doing such a good job too…” Aphmau sighed before looking around. ‘Everyone is already in a group. I guess that’s to be expected… maybe I’ll just sit down and wait for the doors to open?’ Nodding to herself at her newly formed plan she walked somewhere- and immediately bumped into someone for the second time in one day. She would’ve face planted too if not for the person she bumped into grabbing her.
“Oh my Irene I am so sorry!” She rushed out before looking up… and up at the tall guy who grabbed her. He wasn’t as freakishly tall as the other guy but he still dwarfed her. Maybe she needed to do something if she would fall this many times.
“No it’s alright. I’m just glad I managed to catch you.” The blond boy responded, his voice smooth and deep. “Are you alright?!” He also had very pretty deep blue eyes that kept catching her own.
“Y-yes I’m okay! Thank you for catching me.” ‘What is it with all the guys at this school and being freakishly tall?!’
“Of course! Please be more careful next time though, that could’ve been a nasty accident.” He stepped away from her, maintaining proper distance after he had caught her. “You seem a bit frazzled… are you new? A freshman perhaps?”
Aphmau had gotten a hold of herself. Yes his eyes were very pretty and very bright but that was no excuse to be rude! “Yeah I’m new but I’m not a freshman. I’m a sophomore, I just transferred here.”
He smiled. “Oh that makes sense. Sorry for my mistake. Be more careful next time. I’m sure I’ll see you around.” And with that he left, without giving her a chance to ask his name.
As soon as he was out of earshot a voice scoffed. “Pathetic.” A girl with magenta hair and icy blue eyes stomped up to her. “Falling into the first good looking guy you see? How childish.”
Aphmau blinked. “Are you talking to me? Because I didn’t fall on purpose you know. Only an idiot would fall on purpose.”
The girl gasped. “Are you calling me an idiot?!” She screeched at the smaller girl. “I cannot believe you. First you try and put the moves on my man and then you call me an idiot! Garroth Ro’maeve is OFF LIMITS!” She screamed before walking past Aphmau in a huff of anger. The girl with her, the one with dark brown hair and even darker brown eyes walked with her, seeming to comfort her.
Aphmau just watched the two of them go. ‘So I guess Garroth was his name? Who was that weird girl? I obviously didn’t call her an idiot. Maybe she’s just got a problem.’ She shrugged. Not much she could do about that. She texted FC about the two almost falls.
FC
> already almost fell twice :( hope doesnt keep happening
She left their chat, not expecting him to answer anytime soon. After all, he had his first day of school as well. After a few minutes of her mind just wandering she noticed the doors to the school had been opened. She grabbed her bag and walked towards the open door. A loud voice that commanded attention could be heard. It was further amplified by the microphone in her hand.
“ATTENTION STUDENTS. GO TO HOMEROOM!” The voice basically shouted at the crowd. A lot of people seemed to wince at the volume but there was nothing that could be done.
‘Guess that answers that question. Now to find homeroom…’ Her schedule had already been texted to her thanks to her mom’s perpetration. Which made things a lot easier for her. Or should’ve at least. She smiled and while listening to her music, started going up and down the hallways to find her homeroom class. From her wondering she found out very quickly that the school was unfortunately massive. It was three floors and excessively wide, making it near impossible to find where she was looking for. Especially since the hallways were done in a certain order and she wasn’t told about this order- and couldn’t figure it out immediately. After about ten minutes of looking around and trying to get around she sighed and slumped down, exhausted from running up and down the stairs and looking around. ‘It wouldn’t hurt to take a few minute break right? Surely my teacher will understand….? Who am I kidding I’m going to get in so much trouble?!’ She started grabbing her hair a bit, something she does when she starts getting anxious.
“Hey are you okay?” A voice near her called out. It was soft and comforting, similar to the way the girl she spoke to earlier was.
“No… I’m lost and I’m worried since I know I’m late for homeroom. I really wanted today to go perfectly.” She said, her voice filled with frustration. First she ran into one person who didn’t even apologize, then she met someone who seemed really sweet but didn’t manage to ask her name or ask if she wanted to be friends. Then she ran into a second person and then some weirdo yelled at her. It was not shaping up to be a good day.
“Didn’t you get a school packet in the mail? I know they sent them out to the freshman class coming in.” The voice asked, in a confused manner.
“I’m a sophomore- I just transferred here after being homeschooled.” She explained before looking up at the person talking to her. He had soft green eyes and light brown hair.
“Yeah that would explain it. Don’t worry, our teachers tend to be pretty understanding about this kind of thing. At least during the first week.” He offered her a hand and she accepted it, standing up. “Let me help you find your homeroom.” She showed him her phone where the homeroom was clearly shown. “Oh yeah I can show you. It’s down a floor but you are pretty much in the right spot! So you did a pretty good job.” She smiled at him, noting the fact that he was attractive, just like the kind blond Garroth who helped her earlier.
“Thank you so much! I hope I don’t make you late to your class if you do help me. I mean later than you already would be… I think.” She laughed awkwardly. This was a lot of social interaction after a long time of not having any.
“Nah no worries, I’m supposed to be out helping people. I’ve got to go to the club fair after this and help set up but I’ve got more than enough time. Let me walk you to homeroom.” He smiled before walking ahead of her. Showing her where she was supposed to go. “Here we go! Hope to see you around. Oh and before I go…” He smiled mischievously “you look cute in that uniform. Bye.” Laughing to himself he headed off.
Aphmau just stared at his retreating figure. ‘Man people at this school are really flirty. I wonder if that’s all high school or just this one.’ “Ack! Gotta go inside!” She walked into her homeroom and the teacher immediately zeroed in on her.
“Miss I know this is the first day of school but you really should be on time to your classes. I know this is just homeroom but you-“
“I just transferred here!” Aphmau interrupted the teacher before freezing for a moment. ‘Oh my Irene I interrupted a teacher.’
“Ah… yes that does make sense. I can’t penalize you for that one. Come and take a seat, we were just going over what the first week is going to look like. She nodded, still antsy from having interrupted a teacher. She went and sat down and ignored everything that was happening until- “Aph-mew? Did I say that right?” The teacher called out.
She sighed, “it’s Aphmau.” He nodded and wrote down the pronunciation and finally finished calling roll.
“You can all mingle, I expect many of you to want to talk to your friends. Remember the club fair is after this. You’ll have homeroom the first week of school and afterwards you’ll just go to your first block on that given day. That’s all!” He spoke cheerily. After a few moments people started chatting amongst themselves. This was a sophomore homeroom so everyone knew each other- or at the very least was acquainted. Besides her.
She looked around, not wanting to interrupt any conversations going on, but wanting to make some friends. The boy next to her wasn’t talking to anyone! “Hi! My name is Aphmau. It’s nice to meet you!”
The boy smiled at her. He looked sort of different, with stark white hair and light green eyes. His eyelashes and eyebrows were also white. His skin was quite pale, especially compared to her own darker one. He had glasses that were a pretty blue color. “H-hi! My name is Travis. I’m- uh a transfer student here!” He seemed really nervous to be talking to her.
Aphmau gasped at this. “Me too! She gave him a bright smile. “I was home schooled for a couple years. I keep getting mistaken for a freshman because of it!” She chuckled a little.
He laughed at that too. “Me too! I mean not about the home school… about the mistaken for a freshman! I went to a special school last year to help me adjust to everything I need for high school!” Upon seeing the girls confused look he laughed again. “I’ve got some vision issues. I can’t see too well unless something’s close by. Has to do with my lack of pigmentation in my skin. I don’t know how though.”
“Ohhhhhhh…. That makes sense! I guess going to a school like that prepared you for a big high school like this?” He nodded at that. “Honestly I think your hair is really cool.” She smiled at him.
“I can’t believe a pretty girl just complimented me!” He said in a voice that showed he was a little freaked out. “But uh- anyways!”
“Well thank you! I think you’re very pretty as well!” She laughed a bit at this, but she wasn’t wrong. He was quite pretty. Before she could continue the bell rang. “I know we’re off to the club fair. I don’t know anyone- and if you don’t know anyone maybe we could… hang out? Be alone together?”
Travis blushed at this. It was really easy to see since he was so pale. “I’d love that. Maybe… not alone buddies? If you don’t mind me coming with you and us staying close that is.”
“Of course I don’t!” The girl immediately protested. “I wouldn’t have offered it if I did. Let me know if I can help you get around easier too. Not alone buddy!” She laughed before standing up from her seat and offering him a hand. He took her hand and she and him walked to the open door. “I don’t know how bad your vision is so please feel free to hang onto me if you need!”
“I really appreciate that! Our homeroom teacher was told how to help me and my cane is being fixed up right now. So I really appreciate the help even if I don’t need it entirely.”
Aphmau waved her hand in dismissal. “Of course. Even if you don’t need the help I’m here for you!” She smiled and the two walked off.
Aaron’s POV:
He had walked up to the school when he bumped into someone. He had been looking at his face level but hadn’t looked down. Something that was clearly a mistake when he looked down and saw that he’d ran into a really small girl. If not for the uniform he would’ve asked if she was lost and needed help. She had black hair and amber eyes that seemed to glitter with happiness. Only it had stopped when she saw him. Her uniform seemed as uncomfortable on her as it was on him, her shirt extremely baggy and wearing a belt around her skirt.
“Sorry about that.” He spoke softly before heading to the doors of the school. Aaron heard her loudly proclaim that he was a jerk and almost looked back in question. Had he done something wrong already? Obviously he didn’t mean to run into her but it wasn’t his fault she was so small. ‘I just have to look down more often! That’ll work. I guess with Melissa being not that much shorter I forgot I was suppose to do that.’ Aaron nodded, a game plan set in his head. He had some headphones in, listening low enough that he could hear but not so much that he couldn’t hear what was around him. Not that him not knowing his surroundings was an issue he ran into a lot, with his hearing being what it was.
“You know, Balto’s going to be looking for a fight. He’s probably been itching for one since he was declared alpha.”
“If we stay out of the way it’ll be another wolf’s problem not ours.”
Aaron turned out the rest of the conversation the best he could. He was never one to purposely try and eavesdrop. Not to mention he wanted nothing more than to avoid all werewolves. He wasn’t like them, not really and it was hard to connect with them when he was younger. And now? He just wanted to make some friends. Prove to his dad and himself that he was in control. The last thing he wanted was to get involved in wolf business as a human. Or as one who was pretending to be human anyways. But it was at the very minimum good to know who the alpha was. If only just so he could stay out of their way.
He sat on one of the steps waiting for the door to open. It was very unlike the previous school he had been too, where everyone was expected to wait without speaking outside. Here, everyone was talking, embracing and being so excited to see those they hadn’t in a while. He smiled ever so slightly. This was an environment he could get used to. The doors to the school opened and a flood of students rushed in. Aaron winced at the noise that was heard, as did some of the other- some of the werewolf students who were less prepared.
He followed along with everyone, purposefully looking down to make sure he didn’t trip anyone much smaller than him. He wasn’t the only really large guy at the school obviously- and not even the only really large non-werewolf. Which was immensely comforting for him. His broad shoulders seemed to take up more room than he was comfortable with though, so he tried on making himself smaller. Less of a threat. He didn’t want to scare anyone. He didn’t want to make anyone nervous. He just wanted to make friends.
“ATTENTION STUDENTS GO TO HOMEROOM!”
A voice screamed so loudly it felt like he’d bust open his ear drums. He held in the impulse to cover his ears, knowing so would make him look less human. After all, humans can handle loud noises. No one at his old school seemed anywhere near as sensitive when it came to the bell’s ringing. Deep breaths. He looked at his phone where he had gotten an email about the class list. Right there in the middle of the image was the number for his home room. He walked over there, noticing a lot of people unsure of where to go. He was about to help someone- or at least offer it when a dark skinned girl with a golden badge seemed to immediately notice who he was going to offer assistance too. ‘Seems like she’s got it. Besides, I've never been here either. My help wouldn’t be useful in this situation.’ Aaron walked over to the entrance of his classroom only to find many different students there already.
It was a senior homeroom meaning everyone was already aware of the song and dance of the first days of high school. He just grabbed a seat in the back. He had no problem with just spacing out throughout class until-
“Aaron Lycan?”
He raised his hand “Present.” He said before realizing the teacher still was looking around. He raised his voice slightly. “Present.”
His teacher's eyes snapped over to his. “Oh there you are! You have to speak up, in a school as big as this one it’s hard to hear. Welcome to the school Aaron, I hope you have a good year.” He smiled at the new student before continuing to call roll.
“Transfer student and a senior at that?” A girly voice near him spoke. She sounded British, something that clearly stood out to him. “Well welcome to Phoenix Drop High!”
Aaron turned over to the girl and tried to give a smile, only it ended up being more of a grimace. Her hair was bright orange, something easily seen in crowds. “Er yeah uh… thanks?” He offered to the other, his heart beating in his chest. This was his chance to make a friend! “I’m Aaron it’s-“
“Alright class, you’ve got a free period. First week we’ll all meet here first. If you want to go do your club activities do so. If not just hang around.” His teacher said- he really needed to learn the guy's name if he’d be seeing him for an entire week. And the girl already left before he could get a chance to learn her name. That was fine! He had plenty of chances to make new friends. He looked at his schedule. It was a half day so he only had…. WWLF107. What could that stand- oh no. Oh no. ‘FUCK HOW COULD HE?! AFTER EVERYTHING THROUGHOUT HIS ENTIRE LIFE?!!!!’ Aaron snarled before he even properly could process what he was doing.
He clenched his teeth and tried to hold back a growl. A snarl was a human noise. A growl wasn’t. Any inhuman noises would set him apart. And that was extremely dangerous. But clearly his dad didn’t think that part through either! And here he was calling him the risk. Aaron took a few calming breaths before pulling out his phone. He couldn’t change his schedule that moment so he would just distract himself- or complain about it. Pinned was his best friend, Shu’s contact. She’d sent him a text too! Without even realizing, his body relaxed slightly.
Shu
< already almost fell twice :( hope doesnt keep happening
He smiled at that and gave a quiet exhale of enjoyment before whipping around and checking to see if anyone heard. It took him a moment to realize that it didn’t matter if someone heard him. Because he wasn’t at the military school and could do normal things.
Shu
> Twice in what- 30 minutes? That’s a record. Good thing you’re a healer isn’t it? 8D
Purposely he used the emoji she hated. It didn’t even matter why she hated it but she did and that was enough to give him some enjoyment. She always responded angrily when she saw it. He looked up and saw he was one of the few left in the room. Aaron stood up and went to explore. It was better to get some idea of the layout before anything else. There were a lot of new scents and it was nearly overwhelming- not to mention the huge school, all the new areas and floors. Luckily he knew the process for this. Focus on one thing at a time. He closed his eyes and focused on just one thing. And a heartbeat stood out to him. Steady and strong albeit a bit faster than he’d normally hear. So while he was being overwhelmed he’d find a heartbeat and that would be enough. His dad was useful for something at least.
Aaron walked around the school, avoiding the populated areas and where the club fair was taking place. He found himself in a small hallway where a label was over a door. It was a music room. No one was in there and it smelled slightly dusty, like people weren’t frequently going inside. He pushed open the door and it creaked slightly.
It was another boring looking area with a large chalk board, a few smaller rooms and places to sit and leave instruments. Because the band hadn’t started up again there weren’t any instruments. I could probably practice here so I don’t have to worry about if Mom comes home. Looking at his schedule he had another ten minutes or so before he needed to head to… werewolf class. So having already texted Shu he messaged Melissa.
Melissa
> You’ll never believe what dad did.
<Do I even want to know?
> You’ll absolutely want to know. After the YEARS he spent telling me to keep a low profile…..
<Spill already Aaron.
> He signed me up for werewolf class….
Melissa’s icon showed she was typing and stopped. And typing- and stopped. She did this three different times before simply sending:
<No. He couldn’t have.
> I wish I was kidding. Here
He sent an image of his schedule and there it was WWLF107. Or what the actual class would be called, Werewolf107.
< I wish I could tell you something to help. But anything I tell you you’ll already know. Don’t mess with the Alpha and just try and keep a low profile. Maybe you could make a friend?
> Yeah maybe… I’ve got to head to class. I’ll keep a low profile I’m sure. Thanks Melissa I know you're busy but I really appreciate the help.
< You’re my little brother Aaron. I want what’s best for you.
Aaron let out a large sigh before standing up and starting to walk to the class that would inevitably become his least favorite. That was already clear. His footsteps seemed to echo as he walked, the school that felt so full of life he had to escape suddenly feeling all too large and empty. He hadn’t made any friends yet and that was his whole goal in switching schools. He’d never made any werewolf friends before but maybe this was a good opportunity for him? ‘Think optimistically Aaron come on!’ He focused back on a singular heartbeat. It was fast like whoever it was had been running or doing exercise. Normal high school things. Normal high school activities.
He stopped in front of the classroom having already reached it while his thoughts were swimming. I’ve got this. He walked inside the classroom, most of the class not there yet. He wasn’t going to talk to them yet- he needed to gather himself first. Meif’wa and humans were hard enough for him, let alone a werewolf. Or a class full of them. He grabbed a seat in the back and was trying to prepare himself for the interactions that would come forth.
But before he could do anything like talk to someone and make a friend a werewolf came storming into the classroom. His eyes were immediately focused on Aaron. He scoffed and moved closer to him where he was positioned at the back of the room.
“If you were going to take my seat at least have the decency to have your ears and tail out. Challenging me over this wouldn’t be a good idea Pup.” The werewolf who had brown hair and matching ears got right up into his space. His voice was growly and irritating.
Aaron winkled his nose. “Don’t call me pup. I’m not a child.” Technically he was, as were most of the people at the high school. But the way he said the word pup- the werewolf spat it up like it was a curse word. “I just decided to sit somewhere. We don’t have assigned seats. The teacher isn’t even here yet.”
Gasps were heard from the werewolves who were in the classroom, which was steadily filling up more and more with people. Not the teacher though so there was no easy way out of the situation. He could back down and give the asshole the place he was sitting. But that would make him an easy target for being picked on and he didn’t want any attention like that. And he certainly did not want to be bothered like that. So he would have to stand his ground.
“Oh so you have a death wish don’t you?!” The unknown werewolf crackled at him. “Well this is perfect! I get to fight and put some new pup in his place.”
He was being taunted. He exhaled deeply before staring the werewolf straight in the eyes- something he typically avoided doing with anyone besides his direct family. “It’s the first day of school. Get out of my face, go sit down and we won’t have any problems."
Another gasp was heard from the werewolves. At this point almost everyone had arrived in the classroom filling up with werewolves. Not a single one of them were doing anything. He heard a heart beat, fast and steady come into the classroom getting louder.
The werewolf stopped smiling at that point. “You’ve gotta be fucking with me. I’ll-“ he started to raise his fists up when a shout interrupted him.
“Stop!” Someone yelled at them. It was the girl who said he had been a jerk at the very beginning of the day. She didn’t look any different with bright amber eyes and raven hair. She hadn’t grown or become tougher looking since then. The girl still looked slightly ridiculous, with her too long shirt and too big skirt. ‘Is she a werewolf? Does she have some sort of magiks? How is this girl so confident to stand up to a werewolf? Especially one so much larger than her?’
The werewolf swung around and stared at the girl who spoke up against him. She didn’t have any ears or tail either, and that seemed to make him even more angry. “Little Pup you have no idea what you’ve just done to yourself.” He started walking towards her. He seemed to be eyeing her up and down, like she was the perfect chew toy.
“I’ll tell the teacher you are fighting on the first day of school!” She spoke up bravely and foolishly. She’s going to tell on him? Seriously? This girl is going to get herself killed. Or at least in the hospital.
“Wasn’t your fight with me?” Aaron spoke up. He didn’t want to get into a proper fight on his first day of public school- or on any day of school either. But he wasn’t going to let some guy be some sort of creep to a girl either. Especially because she had tried to help... sort of.
“Oh I’ll get to you. After I deal with her first. Heh.” He started laughing a little as she started to back up. He seemed to be approaching her slowly, almost savoring it. The heartbeat sped up much faster, as if in some kind of danger.
Aaron didn’t think about what he was doing, he just moved. He stood up and reached over to where the werewolf was, still advancing on the small girl. With one swift motion he grabbed the werewolf’s uniform collar and threw him out the window. He didn’t put his everything into it because that would be cruel. But he didn’t just let him off easily.
“D-did you just throw him out a window?!” The girl exclaimed in horror and in shock.
“He’s a werewolf, he’ll be fine. They’re all werewolves. This is a werewolf class.” Her amber eyes widened further than he’s ever seen anyone’s eyes go as she looked around her, only to see every single werewolf staring at them. “I-“
“Well well well! It seems like werewolf class is off to a very interesting start this year.” An older man walked into the classroom, his own ears and tail out. “Remember class, we aren’t supposed to smash windows on school property. Hopefully that’s all the excitement for this afternoon now!”
A girl who had been watching the whole situation with horror muttered under her breath. “He just defeated the Alpha…”
“Oh?” The teacher heard what the girl said. He walked over to the now broken window and stared at the student laying unconscious. “That’s Balto alright. Welp guess we’ve got a new-“
“I’m a human!” Aaron yelled out before anything else could be said. ‘How could he have been the alpha?! He was so weak- I thought they were supposed to be tough Oh fuck did I just become alpha I don’t want to be alpha! I want to make friends. Shit.’
The girl next to him still in disbelief raised her hand as well. “I’m also a human. I think I was placed in the wrong class…”
“Okay okay! Here’s going to happen. Everyone to your seats. You two humans-“ the teacher looked at Aaron and the girl near him. “Will see me after class. We have a lesson to go over and I won’t allow any more interruptions. Now!” He clapped his hands and the students followed his direction immediately. It was one thing fighting werewolf students. No one would fight a werewolf adult.
Aaron went back to the seat where his stuff was and the girl who nearly got pulverized followed him and placed her stuff down as well. Upon quick inspection it seemed there were only two seats open. ‘Why is she sitting with me? Maybe she wants to be next to someone who’s a human? It seems she doesn’t know anything about werewolves. Fuck why am I even thinking about this I might have just became ALPHA!’
“Lesson one: what is a werewolf?” The teacher began drowning on and on about the most basic of information. Not a single person was paying attention to the lecture. They all knew what a werewolf was. Of course, except his desk mate who seemed to be writing down notes. Or trying to at least. The heartbeat that had been going so fast and had only added onto his anxiety and actions was slowing down, presumably because classes had started. It seemed to be in the classroom he was in. So he tried to pick a new heartbeat, something else to listen to. But it didn’t seem to work. ‘I guess I have to practice that more. So let’s see. I’m potentially alpha, they all think I’m human because I’m pretending to be one. You can’t have them both. So we just have to switch out of the class. But that still means Balto- I think was his name was defeated and that would cause….’
“And that’s all we have for today! Our class was obviously shorter today due to the fact we had some fun come up in the beginning of class. Our next class will be normal I’m sure. You can head out.” Oh class is over. Aaron realized he had been drifting off into his anxiety, the heartbeat and fear for nearly twenty minutes. “Now you two humans come over here.” The werewolf’s bolted out of the room, most of them through the open window that Aaron had just made.
Aaron stood up and so did the girl next to him. He was about to speak but before he could say anything- or even begin to explain everything that happened. “Name.
“Aaron.”
“Aphmau.” Finally he had a name for the girl who he’d seen multiple times in just the one day he’d been going to public school.
“Aaron, Aphmau. Normally the one in charge of the schedule is very particular about who gets accepted into werewolf class. The idea of not just one, but two humans having been selected to be in this class is very unlikely. The ones who set up your schedule was either you- or your parents if you transferred. Which I’m guessing you both did.” He paused before the two nodded at him. “And since you both transferred that means your parents were in charge of the schedule that was made.
Aaron sighed at that, but the gir- Aphmau’s jaw seemed to drop. “You mean to tell me that my mother signed me up for a WEREWOLF CLASS?!” She shouted and he winched at the noise- luckily so did the teacher.
“I understand you are confused but you do not yell around werewolves. We have very sensitive ears and it’s painful.” The teacher corrected her immediately and she looked horrified.
“I’m so sorry- I didn’t know. I’ve never met a werewolf before… or…” She furrowed her brows a little. “Maybe I have? I don’t know.”
“Listen- I know my dad signed me up for this class.” Aaron interrupted whatever she was thinking about. He just needed to get out of that class immediately. “But I’m human. And I’d really like to avoid getting caught up with werewolf stuff.”
The teacher exhaled through his nose. “Aphmau, speak with your mother. If you can get to her agree I’m sure they’ll allow you to switch classes. Now can you please leave? I have something to discuss with Aaron.”
Aphmau swallowed and nodded before grabbing her stuff and running out of the classroom. If Aaron had any concern left for anyone besides himself he’d be worried about her. Unfortunately that was not the case. The teacher walked over to the door and shut it before sitting down in his chair and gesturing for Aaron to do the same in a chair across from him. “I’m sure you’re confused- although seemingly less so than she was.” He started. “I don’t know if you understand how being alpha works- or if you have even heard of it. Even if you switch out of this class you will not be able to avoid werewolf stuff as you so adeptly put it.”
Aaron freezed up at that. ‘Fuck he knows. I was hoping with all the commotion he wouldn’t be able to focus on what was being said.’ “I know about werewolves. And I know how it works. Am I-“ Aaron couldn’t finish his sentence.
The teacher nodded. “Aaron you are alpha. You can’t just give it up as you seem to be aware. I expect the other wolves will not be so keen on the fact you are a human and alpha. I’ll inform the rest of the facility of your… extenuating circumstance. Normally alpha’s are very prepared for the role. But you aren’t, so I’ll be here to help you.” He gave a smile, his fangs poking through. Despite that, it was oddly comforting. Maybe because he acknowledged how hard it would be.
Aaron sighed. “Thank you. I’m going to really need the help. I don’t have much positive experience with werewolves so…”
The teacher nodded. “If you manage to keep your title you’ll definitely have some positive experience…. Eventually that is.” He smiled. “I can explain alpha female and the expectations of what you must do another day. You’ve had a very long day I suspect. Have a good day. If you need some advice please come by this classroom. I won’t be able to interfere in any fights you have but I can inform the rest of the faculty you are not starting anything.”
“That’s really appreciated. Thank you so much sir. I think I need some time to process. Can I ask you for some help another day?”
“Of course. You are free to leave Aaron. And for what it’s worth, I’m sorry this has happened.” Aaron nodded before standing up and heading out of the class. As soon as he walked out of the classroom he ran down the flights of stairs to get out of the area as fast as possible. I need to tell Melissa everything. She can help me deal with dad’s reaction. And help me so I don’t scream at him. He clenched his fists at that. Maybe mom could help? If she’s at home that is…. Maybe I could mention I had a really weird day at school to Shu? She’s always so wonderful at making my mood better.
He stepped outside to find most of the students already gone. The school had turned to the quiet he’d noticed earlier. He pulled out his phone and noticed a message from Shu
Shu
<Thats in game you dummy! hate that face!!!! 😩btw you would not believe today
> In game or not you’re supposed to be better than tripping twice in like 30 minutes lol. Also I had such a weird day as well you wouldn’t believe it. I don’t know about this new school Shu
< aww it’s okay! I believe in you. 1 days are hard. Besides we wanted to go to real school 4rver. 1 bad day cant ruin it <3
Aaron smiled at that. Even though her texting was still horrible- like it usually was, she was really trying to comfort him. It really did work so easily.
> You know what? For once you are right Shu, I’ll try and give some other days a try.
He put away his phone before she could respond. He’d get back to her later. For now, he had to walk back home and call Melissa. And maybe see if his mom was home. He had to do a lot to figure out the alpha thing. He’d never been apart of a pack, let alone the alpha. Aaron sighed before starting to walk home, his brain buzzing all the while.
Aphmau’s POV, earlier in the day
Aphmau had went to the club fair with Travis near her, holding onto his hand so they didn’t get separated. The tables were buzzing with noise and people. “They’ve got so many clubs Travis!” Aphmau stared at everything in surprise. At the middle school she went to there weren’t nearly as many options for events and clubs! “It’s like… over 50!”
“I know! There’s so many tables!” Travis responded to her enthusiasm with his own. “I can’t even believe it! Where should we start?” He turned to her, looking at her face closely.
“I’m not sure- WAIT!” She yelled and starting dragging him over to a club. “They have an anime club!” Aphmau said excitedly as she speed walked over to the table. “I can’t believe it!” Travis laughed as he was half dragged, half walked with her.
“You’re such a nerd!” Now the two of them hadn’t known each other for a while but he said it without hostility. It was extremely affectionate actually. “Good news for you is I’m also a nerd! But not for anime.” He finished just as the two of them were at the table. A girl with cat ears and bright pink hair was waving at the two of them.
“Hello! I’m Kawaii-Chan. Are you interested in the anime club?” She asked, a sweet smile on her face and a rather high pitched voice.
“I am! My name's Aphmau, how often do you guys meet? I can’t believe this school has an anime club!” Aphmau spoke quickly, her excitement building.
“Sign your name here and Kawaii-Chan will make sure you get the information! Aphmau was about to give her number so she could get texts about meeting times when….
THUNK! A volleyball went straight over to where she and Travis were standing. Aphmau hit it out of the way, since Travis was completely unaware of the flying danger. She gasped, shock wearing off into plain annoyance. “Whoever threw that has got to be more careful!” She spoke loudly, looking around for the perpetrator.
A blue haired girl who looked remarkably strong came up and grabbed the ball. “Hey my bad! Didn't mean to startle you two. But Irene, that was a good serve. You should sign up for the volleyball team!” She smiled before reaching out her hand. “I’m Katelyn, nice to meet ya!”
Aphmau sighed before Travis looked over at the girl. He reached forward, the hand that wasn’t holding Aphmau’s and gave a clumsy handshake. “I’m Travis… it’s nice to meet you.”
Aphmau also put out hers in the same gesture. “My name is Aphmau. “Please be more careful where you throw that, you nearly knocked over Travis!” She said before shaking the girl's hand. It was strong, and her muscles were clearly visible just from the action.
“Don’t worry, I'll be careful. Didn’t mean to scare your little boyfriend over here hah!” She said with a small chuckle. “Anyways I’ll see you two dorks around.” She gave a two fingered wave and went back to the volleyball table.
Aphmau’s face colored slightly with the implication that Travis was her boyfriend, and in ignition at having a ball quite literally nearly hit in. ‘That girl was rude! Hopefully she was also just caught by surprise and doesn’t always act like that.’ “You okay Travis?” Aphmau looked next to her to see the boy staring where Katelyn had disappeared to. “Travis? Travis!”
“H-huh?” He turned to her. “Oh uh sorry about that! She was uh… really something wasn’t she?” Travis looked at Aphmau and then in the direction where she had completely disappeared from his vision.
“Yeah you could say that for sure.” The two walked away from the anime club table, not wanting to hog the space in front. “Anyways, do you want to investigate some of the clubs? Anything you’re interested in?”
Travis smiled awkwardly. “Well uh… is there a theater club?” He asked, his voice breaking at the end of his sentence. Aphmau smiled at him easily.
“Yeah there is one! So what do you want to do? Stage? Lights? Act? Props?” She asked as she led the two of them over to the theater table.
“I want to act. Don’t laugh but I’ve always dreamed of being Romeo…”
Aphmau pointedly did not laugh but she did smile widely at that. “Is it-“ and then she did start giggling. Not at him but she made herself laugh. “Is it because you want that kiss?”
Travis flushed, the redness going down to his neck and ears. “N-no! That has nothing to do with it! That’s something Dante would do!” Aphmau turned to look at him and before she could ask him elaborated. “Dante is a friend of mine! He’s 16 and totally girl-crazy.” He rolled his eyes. “He’s a nice guy though. Stay away from his older brother though. He got held back and he’s nice to me but….” Travis shook his head. “Trust me it’s better if you don’t know him.” She nodded at that, filing away the information for later. She led him to the club and began to space off.
‘So now I know of Dante and his older brother. Who I should stay away from. Travis seems pretty nice, Katelyn was a little weird but maybe she was just flustered? There was that Kawaii-Chan girl which is a weird name but I guess I can’t talk about weird names. There was that super odd girl from this morning… but at least I made one proper friend!’ She looked at her phone, for her next class period. It was something called, WWLF107? ‘What could that even be short for?’ She hummed in thought before Travis returned to her side.
“Hey Aphmau! What are you looking at?” He asked, after having spoken with the theater club.
“Oh I’m just looking at my schedule. I hope it went well with the theater club.” She said, still half focusing on the potential acronym. “It says WWLF107. I’ve never even heard of a class like that.”
Travis also shrugged at that. “It went pretty well, I think I’ll audition for a minor role in whatever they do this year. My next class is just Bio. I have no idea what that could possibly stand for. Anyways, let’s head out before the bell rings.” Aphmau nodded and put away her phone and the two walked out of the crowded club fair room. “Let’s walk over to your classroom first. But I can’t promise to be able to help you find anything-“
“Hello there!” The girl from earlier in the morning- Teony approached the two of them. “You two are out of the fair a bit early, can I help you with something?” She asked, her sweet voice washing over Aphmau and causing her to relax a bit. ‘She really does sound so put together.’
“Hi! Uh I have trouble seeing and I was hoping to get to class before everyone came around?” Travis spoke awkwardly, slightly uncomfortable to have to disclose what the two were planning. Even though as far as she knew there weren’t any rules against it.
“Oh of course! Nice to meet you. Let me take you to your class. I’m sure I can help set you up with someone to help until you are more familiar with the school layout!” She offered before holding out her arm for him to take. “I’m Teony, the student council president.” She looked at Aphmau who was holding his hand. “Oh! You’re the cute girl from this morning. Glad to see you’re less nervous than you were before! I’ll take care of your friend, no need to fret. You can head back into the gym or go around the school until the bell rings. It’ll be around fifteen minutes until class starts!”
Travis gave a wide smile at her. She got close enough that he could see her friendly face. “Don’t worry about me Aphmau, I think I’m in good hands! See you tomorrow.” He called before letting go of her hand and accepting Teony’s arm, as she led him to one of the elevators, the two chatting all the while.
Aphmau just stared off, surprised by the sudden turn of events. “Well I guess I could go find my classroom? I got lost last time so maybe a head start will be helpful!” She looked at her phone again before putting it down and beginning to wonder around, looking for the numbers that corresponded with the numbers on her phone for her last class. And she found it! And peaked inside the classroom and it was entirely wrong. She sighed before beginning her search anew. ‘I’ll totally tell FC about this school. Can’t find anything! I can navigate a dungeon in near darkness but not a damn high school.’ She sighed, feeling bad for herself wouldn’t help the situation at all anyways.
She continued walking around the school in search of the correct classroom. At least she learned that most of the time there was already a set up for students. Many teachers had used the time they were given with the students at the clubs to set up for their next lesson. With a helpful teacher pointing her in the correct way, and a strange look given by the same teacher, she arrived at the classroom! It seemed she wasn’t the only one there however. She peeked inside and didn’t see any teacher. What Aphmau did see, she hardly believed it. A bunch of people with large fluffy ears and tails were surrounding her. And all of them were tall!
Even the girls seemed to be so much larger than she was. And the boys were bigger than most she’d seen. As she sighed and stepped inside, she heard a noise coming from the back of the classroom. “It’s the first day of school. Get out of my face, go sit down and we won’t have any problems.”
All around her people gasped at the guy's words. She pushed forward, the other kids not seeming to notice her much. There! Aphmau had a clear view of what was happening. A guy with dark brown hair, ears and tail stood in front of another boy. Aphmau frowned looking at the second boy. He had dark hair and dark eyes. He was the guy who nearly knocked her over!
“You’ve gotta be fucking with me. I’ll-“ Aphmau shouted at them before he could finish his sentence. ‘What kind of idiots start to fight on the first day of high school?’
“Stop!” She yelled out and those next to her parted ways so she was standing alone. She was not going to risk anything happening on the first day of school when she’d worked so hard just to go here!
The other guy swung around and stared at her with open hostility. He had bright red eyes and an angry looking face. This was clearly a guy who frequently got into fights. ‘I’ll just remind them a teacher is coming. I’m not afraid to yell and run out of here so fast in order to get some help. Clearly everyone else here is.’ The boy looked at the top of her head and seemed to grow even madder at that. ‘What a weirdo.’
“Little Pup you have no idea what you’ve just done to yourself.” He started walking towards her. He seemed to be eyeing her up and down, like she was the perfect chew toy. She did not like the way he was looking at her. It reminded her of some bad experiences she had a year or two ago. Still she spoke up.
“I’ll tell the teacher you are fighting on the first day of school!” Aphmau stood her ground against the boy. After all despite being a large boy he was just that, a boy. Despite her reasoning being very clear, her heartbeat sped up a little. ‘I’m not going to let some asshole intimate me!’
“Wasn’t your fight with me?” The boy from the morning spoke up. Was he trying to defend her?
“Oh I’ll get to you. After I deal with her first. Heh.” He started laughing a little as she started to back up, just a little. He was moving into her personal space and still looking her up and down like a slice of bread. This guy was creepy.
With one swift motion the boy from the morning grabbed onto the others collar and with his other arm swung him out the window. ‘What the fuck what the fuck.’ “D-did you just throw him out a window?!” She was horrified by what she just saw. She was about to rush to the window and see if he was okay. ‘Creep or not he just got thrown OUT A WINDOW!’ Her freaked out thoughts and fear for him was immediately changed when the boy said something.
“He’s a werewolf, he’ll be fine. They’re all werewolves. This is a werewolf class.” Aphmau swung around and stared at everyone. They all had the same ears and tails, sans the boy in front of her and there was a difference in color but! ‘Werewolves? A class of werewolves?!’ “I-“
“Well well well! It seems like werewolf class is off to a very interesting start this year.” An older man walked into the classroom, his own ears and tail out. “Remember class, we aren’t supposed to smash windows on school property. Hopefully that’s all the excitement for this afternoon now!” She stared in shock at the teacher who confirmed the boy's words. She was so surprised and confused that she missed what the teacher said next. In fact she missed what a few people said until-
“I’m a human!” The boy in front of her spoke up firmly and she sighed in both disbelief and relief. Yes, someone else had been in this mixup. Not just her. Thank Irene. ‘Even if he was the one who threw that werewolf OUT THE WINDOW!’
So she raised her hand and spoke. “I’m also a human. I think I was placed in the wrong class…”
“Okay okay! Here’s going to happen. Everyone to your seats. You two humans-“ the teacher looked at Aphmau and the boy near her.. “Will see me after class. We have a lesson to go over and I won’t allow any more interruptions. Now!” He clapped his hands and the students followed his direction immediately. Aphmau looked surprised about that. They weren’t going to fight him on that? They just watched a fight happen and did nothing! And all of a sudden when a teacher asks they just behave?! She looked around and saw all the desks were full of students. There were three empty seats available. One next to the boy who threw the guy out the window and two in the middle of the classroom. ‘Since that guy is out the window he’ll probably sit in the middle of the classroom. And I don’t want to sit next to him. So I guess I have to sit next to window boy?’ She reasoned before moving over to the seat next to him and plopping down.
Aphmau took out her school supplies, a large journal and one of her pretty erasable pencils. She began writing when the teacher spoke. “Lesson one: what is a werewolf?” Aphmau’s eyes shot open as she immediately started writing down everything he was saying. Strangely no one else seemed to be listening to the teacher. Even the boy next to her who said he was a human had his eyes glazed over and seemed to be anywhere else than in the classroom. Still she followed along with the lecture as best she could. ‘Even though I’ll switch out of this class tomorrow it’s still useful information. Especially since I’m in school with these guys now…’ She shook a little. ‘I can process after class. This is not the place.’
“And that’s all we have for today! Our class was obviously shorter today due to the fact we had some fun come up in the beginning of class. Our next class will be normal I’m sure. You can head out.” Aphmau blinked at that. The entire class was over? She had only written down two or three paragraphs and several bullet points. And even though it was so simple to everyone else, her mind was already swimming. ‘Thank Irene I won’t be in this class tomorrow or later. I’d be so lost.’ All the peop- werewolves seemed thrilled to be getting out of class and were practically running out. And half of them were going out the broken window? She furrowed her brows but before she could do anything she needed to talk to the teacher. She got out of her seat and walked over to the older man. Before she could say anything he asked,
“Name.”
“Aaron.” The boy- the one she’d seen twice in her first day of school answered. Well at least she didn’t have to keep calling him window boy in her head. Or rude boy.
“Aphmau.” She was about to speak more but closed her mouth when she noticed the teacher about to speak.
‘Holy shit. There’s no way!’ “You mean to tell me that my mother signed me up for a WEREWOLF CLASS?!” She shouted in shock before seeing the teachers' ears pin themselves back.
“I understand you are confused but you do not yell around werewolves. We have very sensitive ears and it’s painful.” The teacher corrected her immediately and she felt awful. Sure, she was surprised but she never wanted to hurt them! ‘Was that speciesism? Is that even a thing?
“I’m so sorry- I didn’t know. I’ve never met a werewolf before… or…” Unwillingly a memory from when she was very little came up. It was a man who had the same amber eyes as she did and he had werewolf ears. She remembered reaching for him. She furrowed her brows a little. “Maybe I have? I don’t know.” ‘Who was that? I have to have a very long discussion with mom.’
“Listen- I know my dad signed me up for this class.” The boy- no, Aaron at least seemed a lot less surprised than she did.
Aphmau swallowed and nodded before running and grabbing her stuff from the back of the classroom. She didn’t even bother to wave or say goodbye to the teacher or Aaron. She needed to talk to her mom immediately. Like that very second. She ran down the halls, which were already deserted. Her mom had apparently been aware of the fact of both her schedule and her half day and was waiting for her.
“Hi mija, how was your first day of school?” She asked as Aphmau approached the parked car. Aphmau glanced at her mom, got into the car without speaking and closed the windows. Before she could question anything, Aphmau finally turned to her.
“WEREWOLF CLASS?!” She screamed, her shock and surprise evident on her face. The older woman winced at her volume.
“Mija- volume.” The older woman tried to correct her but Aphmau was having none of it.
“No Mama! You signed me up for some werewolf class where I think I was almost attacked, some kid threw another out the window and then I have a weird memory of some guy with the same colored eyes as I have with wolf ears and wonder if my memory is failing at the ripe old age of 15!” She began tugging on her hair again. Twice in one day was not a good sign for her future high school career.
Slyvanna took a deep breath before starting the car. “Aphmau go on your phone. We’ll talk about all of this when we get home.”
Aphmau fished her phone out of her pocket. Clearly her mom wasn’t expecting the consequences of her actions. The action of signing her up for werewolf class that is. She fished out her phone and found a text from FC.
FC
<Twice in what- 30 minutes? That’s a record. Good thing you’re a healer isn’t it? 8D
Aphmau groaned at that. ‘That stupid face! Not to mention he’s totally making fun of me! He’s supposed to be making me feel better not more stressed!’
>Thats in game you dummy! hate that face!!!! 😩btw you would not believe today
<In game or not you’re supposed to be better than tripping twice in like 30 minutes lol. Also I had such a weird day as well you wouldn’t believe it. I don’t know about this new school Shu
Okay so she would tease him but him having a rough day as well wasn’t something she was expecting. He didn’t always share how he felt anyways. She knew his family was strict. She knew he was at military school until he transferred to his new school. So she let go of her hair, took a deep breath and typed to him. She could share her day later- when he was feeling a bit better.
> aww it’s okay! I believe in you. 1 days are hard. Besides we wanted to go to real school 4rver. 1 bad day cant ruin it
< You know what? For once you are right Shu, I’ll try and give some other days a try.
She gasped in surprise at that last text, before immediately going in on him.
>For ONCE?! NVM Fite me STI I kill u
She looked up from her text messages to see that they had nearly arrived home. He always took so long to text, something she’d gotten on his case for many times… and likely would continue to. But she had at least calmed down significantly from her crazy day and turned to her mom. “Mama I’m sorry for yelling. I had a long day and the surprise for werewolf class didn’t help.”
Sylvanna sighed and nodded. “I understand mija but you cannot yell at me like that. I’ll excuse it this time. Next time you're grounded.” She unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car and Aphmau did the same.
“Now come inside and we’ll chat.” Aphmau obediently followed her mom inside the house and took a seat on the couch waiting for her mom to put her keys away. Once that was done, she took a seat next to her daughter.
“Aphmau you mentioned you remembered a man with eyes like yours… who had werewolf ears?”
Aphmau nodded at that. “I was telling the teacher I was sorry for yelling and I didn’t know that werewolves had sensitive ears. I’d never met one before. And then I remember….” She stopped for a moment before thinking. “He was really tall… in our old house and I was on the stairs. He had brown ears and a tail.” She furrowed her brows before saying something else. “He was nice…. Mama, was he a friend of yours?”
Sylvanna sighed at Aphmau’s memory. In some ways she looked almost surprised the other remembered so much. On the other hand, she seemed really upset. “Please know I wasn’t trying to keep this from you on purpose.” She grabbed onto Aphmau’s hand and stared at her. “That man you remember was not a friend of mine. He was my…” She swallowed before forcing the words out. “He was my ex-finacée and your father.”
She felt her eyes going wide. ‘My father? Mama never mentions him… I didn’t even know they were going to get married. Wait he was a WEREWOLF?! I’m part werewolf?!’ Aphmau opened her mouth to speak before her mom shook her head.
“Please let me get through this and then you can storm upstairs or ask me questions.” At Aphmau’s hesitant nod, she continued. “He was a werewolf. You could’ve been one as well, but you turned out not to be. I don’t think Zack ever expected that. He got into….” Slyvanna bit her lip. “He cheated on me with another woman and had a child with her. That child was a werewolf.” Aphmau felt even more surprised if that was possible. “He wanted nothing to do with me afterwards. Always sneaking out, claiming to hang out with his friends…. Anyways! That’s why I signed you up for werewolf class. Just so you know your roots.”
Aphmau didn’t know what to say. “Mama…. I’m going to go upstairs. I need some time to myself.” She gave her mom a quick hug before taking herself and all her stuff with her upstairs. ‘So my father cheated on mom… because I wasn’t a werewolf? Or because he was a bad guy? Or maybe it was both…..’ Aphmau opened the door to her bedroom and shut the door and locked it. She needed time to process what her mom had said. She’d say something about it to FC later. For now she needed time. And then do a lot of research about werewolves.
