Kimi steered the shopping cart, rushing a little through the aisles. His parents were looking forward to having dinner together since he graduated and wanted to throw a little celebration, just the three of them. Papa had decided to make homemade pasatelli, one of Kimi's favourites. Although Kimi was adopted, his parents did not hesitate to integrate him with his culture: they enrolled him in an Italian school, spent summers on the Adriatic, and facilitated everything he wished to know about his background. They even kept his Italian name instead of giving him a name like John or Jan, although he had to learn English and Dutch to be able to communicate with his parents and then French, because they decided to move to Monaco.
'Andrea, do not rush through the aisles,' said Papa George.
'Papa, there is literally no one else.'
'You could get hurt.'
'I am already eighteen, not a chi—'
'Andrea, listen to your Papa and behave,' replied Dad.
Kimi furrowed his brows and pushed the cart further away from his parents. They were somewhat annoying right now. He went through the aisles until he reached the dessert section. He wondered if maybe they could have torta di riso with almond ice cream. Normally his parents would not have that much time to make homemade food; now there was the opportunity to seize the occasion and make the most of it. Dad was an excellent cook. Going back to look for his parents, he found them checking different types of flour, Dad's right arm around Papa's waist. That made Kimi smile. His parents loved each other very much, but that did not stop them from bickering nonstop.
'George, they look the same to me. Grab the red one.'
'No, Max, this one is gluten-free; we need another.'
'Jesus Christ.'
'Stop complaining, or you are not having dessert tonight,' threatened Papa. George looked up and saw his son coming back. 'Kimi, baby, ask the charcutier to give you some Parmigiano, please.'
'Sure thing! Can we have torta di riso for dessert tonight?' Kimi asked, shifting his weight from foot to foot.
'No problem, kid,' replied Dad. 'We will grab the missing ingredients for it then.' He reached for the cart. 'Let's meet at the freezers.' His parents left to look for the missing items while he went to grab the cheese.
The charcutier already knew Kimi, and while he was a funny man, he always asked whether his parents were still together. Dad said the man was a creep who wanted to pursue Papa. Papa said Dad was overly protective. Kimi thought Papa only tolerated him because they got extra Spanish ham out of it. Once Kimi had the cheese, he went to look for his parents.
They were by the freezers, talking animatedly to an older man. Who was this? Kimi started to feel somewhat annoyed. He wanted to go home, help with dinner, eat, and play Mario Party with his dads. He approached the group wearily.
'Kimi, baby, do you remember David?' Papa asked, introducing him to the other man. He had a very square-like face. Like handsome Squidward.
'Uhhhhhhh, no? ' replied Kimi. 'Sorry, not at all.'
'It's normal, child,' replied the man, David. 'He hasn't seen me since I moved back to Scotland. 'Laughing, he added: 'I used to change your nappies when you were little.'
Kimi forced a laugh while cringing internally. His parents knew so many people that these kinds of interactions were deeply uncomfortable for him. Why did everybody change his nappies when he was a baby?!
His parents kept talking to this David for a long time. Dad even asked about some details Kimi couldn't follow. He was hungry and wanted to leave the supermarket. Was destiny playing a joke on him? He started chatting with his friend group about plans for tomorrow. Almost everybody said yes to sailing with Ollie's family, except Gabi, who still had to meet with his tutor. Weird.
'Kimi!'
Kimi looked up; Dad was calling him. David had gone, and Kimi was left alone with his parents again.
'Why did everybody change my nappies when I was a baby?' he whined.
George and Max looked at each other and burst out laughing.
'Hilarious,' said Papa, clutching his belly.
They made their way to the cashier while Kimi explained just how bizarre it all was.
'Kimi, when we adopted you, we were quite young, and you were so tiny…' said Dad, placing items on the belt. 'All the adults around us helped us out, including David.'
'Does that include that woman named Greta from the other week?'
'Yes, her too. '
Kimi sighed. He supposed more of these encounters would keep happening throughout his life. That did not mean he had to enjoy them, though.
The family left the supermarket and had a lovely dinner together that evening.
Papa George beat them both at Mario Party and stole a star from Dad.
