Work Text:
Guest held gently onto John’s sweater vest, feeling the soft yarn between their fingers. He was scary, sometimes, but he was also warm and funny.
They held onto a plastic bag firmly in their other hand, determined to help. Guest didn’t know what was inside, but the way John had laughed and ruffled their hair when they grabbed it made them smile, so Guest was happy to help.
John and Jane Doe was supposed to help the guests settle in and figure out their place in the world. For now, that translated into shopping together to allow Guest to explore in a controlled manner.
It was hard not to get distracted by the sights though.
John was stalling by a map, looking for activities for the rest of them to play in. It was a perfect chance for Guest to quietly watch everyone as they passed by. While people gave them a wide berth (Guest didn’t know why, and John didn’t give them an answer when they asked,) most Robloxians didn’t seem to notice them.
Like that one kid across the street.
Guest couldn’t help but notice a park nearby, children screaming and laughing as they clambered all over it. Everyone was talking and playing together, a blur of colorful bodies mixed in with the occasional adult looking over their respective spawn. A short kid held up a ball and kept walking up to others, excitedly offering to play.
They watched as each time, the kid was denied. Each time, the kid grew less and less enthusiastic until they were quietly mumbling their offering, head hung low and curly hair hiding their face.
A large hand detached Guest’s hand from the vest and held it gently. “Come along now, Default Guest,” John said with a gentle tug. “Jane and your siblings should be at the HQ soon, we’ll have to hurry to meet them.”
Guest watched the kid for a moment longer, then nodded to John. The two of them then set out to the HQ, where hopefully Billy and Betty were waiting.
They looked back one more time. The kid’s blue shirt looked a little wet, and they were covering their face with their arm.
“Don’t get distracted now.”
Guest hurried to follow along, smoothing out the front of their grey sweater the best they could.
Guest paused for a moment, staring out at the park on the other side of the street. Noob was browsing the map nearby for a new activity, leaving Guest’s attention to wander.
The park was a little familiar, which was odd because Guest didn’t ever recall playing on that particular set before. Maybe they walked past it often?
”Hey Guest,” Noob said, catching their attention. “There’s a new dodgeball type experience nearby. Wanna check it out?”
Guest spared the park one more look, but nodded at Noob. They let Noob drag them off to someplace new, and idly smoothed down the front of their jacket. They had to look presentable, after all.
