Work Text:
Secret Agent leaned against the wall at the back of the check in, watching over the cameras while Intern took care of the anomalies. Giving him a nod whenever one would waltz in.
As Intern shut the shutters on another obvious anomaly with a wide smile, they turned to the Secret Agent, staring at them for a while. Secret Agent tried ignoring it, but they just kept staring.
He felt his wrist twitch over his pistol subconsciously, he wanted nothing more than to fire his gun at them. And watch as they showed their true nature, maybe as a shapeshifter, maybe something completely new. But he couldn’t. He had no permission to do so, and Intern was to valuable to lose.
Intern kept up their staring until someone knocked at the shutters, “hey, are you really out of service? I’m here for my appointment.”
They snapped their head back and opened up the shutters, jumping back as another anomaly stood behind the shutters, their eyes bulging out of their head, both off centered and a terrible smile spread over it’s face.
Secret Agent immediately fired his gun, sending the Anomaly flying back just as the Intern shut the shutters.
They let out a breath of relief, “why are there so many this night?”
Secret Agent just shrugged, not wanting to make conversation with them. Glancing back at the camera’s they saw a disfigured anomaly in front of the shutters.
”Keep them closed, it’s another one.” He grunted.
The Intern’s ears twitched irritably, but then they paused again. Their head snapping to the Secret Agent.
“Why me?”
”Hm?”
”Why did you hire me.”
Secret Agent stiffened up at the sudden question, mumbling a curse to himself to showing so much of a reaction to it.
”I mean… there must’ve been some desperate people much more qualified than me?”
”Overqualified for the job. They wouldn’t stick around for long.” He lied back, it was a good one, didn’t leave much room for question.
“And what, you aren’t?”
Secret Agent’s eyes narrowed, “I guess I just slipped through the cracks.”
He turned to watch the camera’s again. Hoping their wouldn’t be an anomaly behind it so he could tell the Intern to get lost. But he should’ve known he wouldn’t get that lucky, because when he looked into the camera’s, a anomaly was staring right back.
“tch…” he clicked his tongue, waiting for the anomaly to walk off. But suddenly he felt someones eyes on him.
He froze up. The Intern was staring. But god they were so much closer now, He slowly turned around, immediately met with the Intern’s eerie smile.
”Why are you lying to me.”
”What?”
“This place is disgustingly understaffed. We should have plenty more Intern’s. But I was the only one to land the job?”
”Well yeah, I guess you were lucky, why are you pushing this so much.” Secret Agent hissed, feeling his ears pressed up against his head.
“A little birdie told me to be wary, and you really stick out compared to everyone else here.”
”A little birdie?” Secret Agent’s eyes narrowed even tighter, it was Ratthew, he always knew try the rat was up to no good, and he came by far to often.
”Why do we even have two security guards?” They stepped a closer to Secret Agent, who was already pressed up onto the security camera’s table.
“Why wouldn’t we?” He spoke in a much lower tone now, trying to calm the Intern down.
“Security is more than enough.” Intern challenged, it was like he had a reply to every single lie Secret Agent could spill out.
“Maybe you need some coffee.” He motioned over the the coffee maker that had recently finished its production of another cup.
But the Intern completely disregarded it. Stepping even closer to the Secret Agent.
They were now unbearably close, Secret Agents head reeled back as far it could. He could taste the bitter taste of coffee in the Intern’s breath now.
”Every time I look at you, your hand twitches over your gun. I’m not an idiot.”
The Secret Agent felt a shiver run through his spine. Was he that jumpy? All the time? No wonder they found out something was off so quickly.
He had no more lies to hiss anymore, he just stared back into the Intern’s eyes. He gulped slightly, but he didn’t break eye contact, if he let the Intern know he was nervous. They would only grow more suspicious.
He was only a second away from grabbing the taser and just tasing him when the Head Nurse bursted in.
”Hey! A Shapeshifters attacking Security! He needs you help his taser’s out of charges…” she trailed off as she noticed how close the two were.
”Now of all times?” She muttered.
Secret Agent immediately shoved the Intern back, clearing his throat, “alright, where is he,” he stated, drawing his gun out and walking out with the Head nurse.
Intern stared at the door. They were so close to getting that cat to revealing anything. They were getting tired of pushing his suspicions down, but it was all just to off. Who came to work in a suit? Nobody does that. Well, not if they work in a hospital at least.
They were still lost in thought before they suddenly remembered the shutters were still shut, they scrambled to get it open, being greeted by someone that seemed normal. But the his arm twitched oddly, and the Intern shut them again.
Secret Agent had just finished helping Security with the Anomaly, and was heading back to the check in, hoping Intern had returned to his senses. But he ran into Head Nurse in the way there.
”Hey.” She waved at him, her other arm carrying a bunch of supplies. He didn’t wave back, hurrying to get back to the office so Intern didn’t let any more Anomalies in.
”Well your in a hurry.” The Head Nurse said, a taunting undertone to it, and the Secret Agent felt his face flush a bit, (luckily, his fur was far to dark for anyone to notice.) and he immediately turned back.
“Whatever you think that was. It wasn’t.”
“Uh-huh, whatever you say dear.” She laughed.
“I mean it, the Intern was just being weird again.”
”When are they not?”
Secret Agent laughed a bit, “Yeah…”
He took a sharp inhale through his nose before walking back into the check in room. The Intern was checking someone in, completely ignoring him.
But even then. The Secret Agent’s hand twitched again.
